Yeah, just the good ones.

Same thing that can be said for the EU

Maybe they could give it a catchy name, like "Commonwealth". They could even have the Queen appear on each nation's currency. It's worth a shot.

There's no hand-over period? Two days after the election and he's sworn in? That seems crazy for the leader of a country. Wouldn't a month be needed to get things in order and move?

I still like Albanese Gummy bear candy. ;)

At least Australians aren’t crying fake election. Still complaining but at least accepting.

Credit to the Aussies for holding a valid election.

Canada OZ NZ and the UK. Open borders and free trade between the 4 with closer cooperation on the international stage. A mini EU model but only with those 4 countries.

Well well, this will get interesting. Ms Wong has been on the record criticising QUAD, AUKUS and generally leaning towards appeasing China. Love to see how she and her boss weasel out of her past views.

BigYen

Thanks for the detailed explanation brother!

Tbh, I voted for the Republic last time, but if it came up again it would very much depend on the model being proposed.

I'm a brit, so I've got no say in the matter whatsoever.

What I do hope and dream of more than anything is a CANZUK agreement between our 4 countries. Canada OZ NZ and the UK. Open borders and free trade between the 4 with closer cooperation on the international stage. A mini EU model but only with those 4 countries. So whoever is PM in these 4 countries is always of great interest to me.

Another lifelong politician

In most cases I'll take a career politician who by the very nature of his job duties has long dealt with a range of individuals from all walks of life and communities over a lifelong bureaucrat who worked in government spy/security positions all his life like the leader of one of the globe's current empires, or a person who's background comes from real estate, golfing and grifting.

"A life long politician " who has been Minister in various portfolios and served as Deputy Prime Minister as well

when the ALP were last in Government.

So a lot of real life experience in handling big issues like Government spending in Infrastructure and Development etc, as well as someone who knows how the Government functions IN REALITY.

Previous devious PM Morrison had a background in Tourism, being sacked or asked to walk on two occasions.

Give Albo a decent chance....at least I'm no longer embarrassed by the quality of the Federal Government.

I see Australia'a conservative party also calls themselves the ironically-named Liberal Party, like Japan's Liberal Democrats.

It reminds me of the nations that put "Democratic Republic of..." (or something like it) in their countries' official names. They always seem to be anything but that.

Good riddance! Morrison was awful.

my only worry is that he is a republican, which means he wants Australia to become a republic and have a system more closely aligned to the US system of government

Bye-bye Scott Morrison. Now he can go vacationing in Hawaii again while his fellow Aussies are suffering from the pandemic, wildfires and more. He ain't got a job now, and he didn't do his while he had it.

He remains in politics. He won his seat and is now a member of the opposition. He stepped aside for a new leader to be elected for the Liberal party. Your assumption is incorrect.

He was voted in, he’s the most popular choice. That’s it.

One problem I see is being sucked into the game of thrones aspect of it. Where getting and more importantly STAYING in office takes precedence over anything else. Especially actually doing something for the people who elected you. The whole purpose becomes a mess. Utter mediocrities like Joe Biden are the sad result. Hence my constant and irritating refrain that term limits at all levels are an absolute necessity if actual democracy is to flourish.

Whereas, someone who had a quote unquote real life has something to go back to. Public service for the sake of actually serving the public instead of turning it into a career. Maybe I am a bit idealistic about the whole thing. But I don't want a political leader to like it, well, too much.

Your BoJo example shows that failure can translate well from the private sector to politics for sure. I prefer people who have at least a modicum of success to fall back on, like Mike Bloomberg or Andrew Yang or Mitt Romney. I think competence can similarly translate from private to public sectors.

@Attilathehungry

I’m honestly open to the idea that career politicians as leaders are worse than those who have a background in other fields, but I just don’t see it.

My background is in manufacturing. I don’t see how that would make me a better leader if I went into politics. I’d probably have more knowledge of that particular area than most, but that’s about it. Even that knowledge is quite specific and limited.

UK PM Johnson was a journalist sacked for journalistic dishonesty but he did ‘make payroll’. I don’t see how that gives him any kind of edge over others - even part-time drama teachers.

Jimizo, I sympathize. Our current PM was a part time drama teacher before riding his father's last name into politics and mediocrity. I prefer a leader who hasn't spent decades with their snout in the trough, who has at least had to make payroll or proved their skills in the marketplace.

Albanese sworn in as new PM ahead of Tokyo summit:

US-led QUAD has 3 other members. While Japan is practically 100% pro-US, India has been sitting on the fence.

As new Australian leader is uncertain of his depth of affiliation to US, QUAD's counter China policy remains lame..

Another lifelong politician who has never held a real job in his entire adult life suddenly takes the reins. What could possibly go wrong?

Quite a lot could go wrong but at least give the fella a chance before judging.

Plenty of absolutely useless leaders had jobs outside politics. The present leader of my country was a journalist ( is that a ‘real’ job? ) and he’s an absolute car crash.

I think it was PJ O’Rourke who asked if you want a dog who knows where the bones are buried, or a dog who doesn’t and makes a mess by digging up the whole garden.
