The highly profitable Nicotine gum and patch products which require a doctor's okay

I think they are sold over the counter where I live? Do you have any more info?

The BMJ, the world's leading medical journal, fatalities from iatrogenic (physician related) deathsin America lead those of lung cancer by a hundred thousand people a year

Do you have a source for that? I'm genuinely interested. I was made to read  Ivan Illich's Medical Nemesis as a student, which was when I first heard the term iatrogenesis

.

This is just the AMA and BIg Pharma trying to corner one of the largest and most profitable markets in the world: Nicotine. The highly profitable Nicotine gum and patch products which require a doctor's okay ($) aren't enough for them. They're businessmen first, after all (see: clinical psychopathy). In American medicine, 'Primum non nocere' was disparaged generations ago and 'Primum non nocere ei prodest' is now the guiding morality of America's poorly trained and arrogant physicians whose most important influence are their Big Pharma drug reps. According to The BMJ, the world's leading medical journal, fatalities from iatrogenic (physician related) deaths in America lead those of lung cancer by a hundred thousand people a year (~154,050 (2018) for L.C. and ~250,000 (2017) for 'medical error'). Statistically, no American is more at risk of their life or serious injury than when sitting in their doctor's office.

They need to create some sort of nicotine glove, so that smokers/vapers can deliver the drug by slapping their own faces, or punching their foreheads. Make them flavoured for all I care. Stoopid people need to learn that it is the nicotine they crave. It does nothing for you, save make you irritated until you get more.

Thank you Allen Carr, for getting me off that crap. RIP.

Mmwkw:

It's not a shadow govt per se (Nor the opposition party which also means that), its the civil service. It's not shady, its just the way it's always been done and change is so hard (remember last time in office they changed forms or updated windows?). Yes, minister is a comedy but based on real events of the civil service vs elected officials.

Sneezy:

Sugar and alcohol also poisons the body. Should we ban them too?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

They don’t need to ban them, if people are that ignorant of the harm smoking can cause long term that should be each persons own decision and right, if they want to damage their lungs, go for it! I just don’t think the government needs to stand in their way and block their constitutional rights.

You do not have a right to sell people poison.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

US Politics is all about them and us... I really wonder how any ever gets done, and if so, by whom ? Is there a Shadow Government in the US Actually doing things and both the Republicans and Democrats are a sideshow for the general population ? Maybe this is how Democracies work globally ?

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

The ban would absurd.

Clearly the current situation is not OK, too many deaths already. The persons got very sick really quickly, very young. It's worrying. The devices were marketed as safe, that was a huge mistake.

Those that were not smoking, should not be starting to vape.

Maybe the vaping goods could be sold in pharmacy only, on presciption for cigarette (and co) smokers trying to minimize damage. Is not the nicotine patch a safer solution for them ?

Thank you, Chip Star. I've done so before but stress and other factors led to me taking up the bad habit once more.

Smoking is a fairly benign reaction to stress, for what it's worth.

Even in moderation, it's a bad thing. But it's very interesting to see the sudden war on vaping becoming so prevalent and discussed.

Agreed. Watching a "war" on something build is fascinating. Will history be more accurate because of the Internet?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

I hope you are able to kick the habit for your loved ones. Appreciate your reasonable input on the topic.

As a complete chimney, who smokes way too much, this is untrue. It is not safe. I've seen people die from it, and I'm well aware that fate could await me, if I don't kick the habit.

don’t know how it is in America these days. But for example all packaging has to be exactly the same, with only the brand name differing between packages, with full warnings over the entire package. Product not allowed to be displayed visibly in store and there can be only price lists displayed visibly. Or maybe only sell from pharmacies. Basically regulated, but kept clinical, and distributed as part of a non-profit scheme where any profits are funded to education and rehabilitation.

Thanks fir the clarification. In the states, its no tv commercials. No characters teargetibf children on the packaging. The surgeon general's warning.

Nothing like the fine photos adorning the knock off (?) brand I've seen some Europeans enjoying.

I read about natural tobacco recently and it actually sounded quite dangerous. Even to touch apparently.

Anyone remember Death Cigarettes, back in the 90s? Pretty honest advertising there...

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Correct me if I misunderstand: let adults do it but have no formal marketing campaign? Like the banning of cigarette ads on TV in Merika?

American Indians loved tobacco

Of course. Easy way to pacify a nation.

and if used responsibly it is safe.

I used alas in a sentence!

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Just like tobacco I don’t like the idea of telling adults they aren’t allowed to ingest something if they want to do it. I think they should be forced to remove labeling and not be allowed to market vaping products.

The big tobacco companies will be happy.

Smoke some occasional and natural weed and the world would be such a better place

Wouldn't it be great if the hysterics surrounding that plant would die down. Alas, there will always be those that act out of ignorance-driven fear.

Banning vaping while leaving cigarettes alone is like banning airguns while permitting the sale of howitzers.

“But right now, nicotine electronic cigarettes are competing with and replacing the most harmful legal product in this country.”

Look, big tobacco is still big tobacco, just as tobacco is still tobacco and nicotine is still nicotine, a poison that is still one of the most addictive drugs.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

What died the AMA think it is? A group of medical experts?! Educated idiots is more like it. Let the market decide!

Nope, I can't play a conservative with a straight face.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

From what I have read, the vast majority of vaping deaths and injuries are not from vaping tobacco products, but cannabis and THC. Less than 20% as reported to the CDC were caused from vaping nicotine. Vaping correctly is actually relatively safe, especially compared to smoking cigarettes. It is a harm reduction strategy, not a harm elimination strategy.

The puppetmaster in the whole situation is Big Tobacco. They want to kill off vaping because it threatens their business model. Plus, BT is now developing tobacco products that are smoke free- they heat the tobacco enough for the nicotine to come out, but not to the point of combustion. But they aren't ready for market yet. So they have to keep their market share until they are.

Not to mention it is interesting who actually purchased a huge chunk of Juul stock- the Philip Morris tobacco company...

@Lamilly

So are they advocating going back to real cigarettes?

It's not that they are advocating going back to cigarettes. But vaping and e-cigarettes have become a bigger issues because they are primarily marketing towards children. Many of the organizations have been fined when they entered schools under the guise of speaking out against smoking and the dangers of smoking anything. Only to find that they were secretly handing out promotional fliers or going behind teachers backs and tell students to start using their products.

Hurrah. Ban these. Ban tobacco. But promote medical marijuana and opiates. All very sensible.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

Smoking, doesn't matter what quantities you smoke it is doing damage to your circulatory and respiratory system, smokers are 8 times more likely to die from strokes and respiratory illness than non smokers, smokers die on average 7 yrs younger than non smokers. Decades of research and statistics confirm these facts, so you can understand why governments have a duty to help stop people smoking to live longer healthier lives.

But those have nothing to do with tobacco no ?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Smoking whatever for special occasions is very different from smoking 20-40 cigarettes a day or how ever much Juul e-cigs provide.

I think adults should be allowed to harm themselves if they choose with all the facts provided. I also think there shouldn't be any legal recourse by people who make that choice and that nobody else should be impacted by their smoking who is unwilling. There should be an added "smoker" health insurance charge, since it is a lifestyle choice. Other lifestyle choices which drastically impact health costs should also have added charges with the costs shown on the bill.

People have a right to be stupid.

I was waiting for a bus and heard a heavy bronchial cough as if black lung had returned. I turned expecting to see someone older but no, it was a kid maybe 18. They're kidding themselves and killing themselves

The big industries controlling tobacco have long changed that. Watch the movie 'The Insider' for some insight into how big tobacco makes tobacco unsafe. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt000000000140352/

I've seen ppl vaping before but never like the guy in this photo.

In agreement with Lamilly: "Are they advocating going back to real cigarettes?"

I got no real problem, cigarette usage rates were going down on a regular rate until this vape nonsense started and then they've actually been growing because it's heavily being pushed as a "safe" alternative and doesn't have the negative stigma that cigarette usage has.

Trump allies working in the vaping industry

Trump allies are in the tobacco industry (strong lobby)

Trump's flip-flopping on the issue, waiting to see which group contributes the most to his campaign coffers (so he can skim from it like he did his 'charity').

President Trump Will Meet With the Vaping Industry Ahead of Potential Bans

Au contraire! Guess this will happen cause some Trump allies are in the tobacco industry (strong lobby)

@Klaus

your quotes "..... this is because Trump allies working in the vaping industry told the president that polling in battleground states suggests the move would impact his chances in the 2020 election." and "vaping buddies" appear from where? and why?
