With the face mask requirement, the facial recognition technology is anyway not going to work, and that's the primary reason they are fine with this.

This is ridiculous! Facial recognition software helps police solve crimes! Are we against solving crimes? Do they think people have the right to loot, steal, & destroy without being held accountable? We need to support our police, not work against them. Of course, changes need to be made in how they treat suspects, especially suspects of color, but I for one, do not want to live in a society where the police are at a disadvantage and are hindered from doing their job.

Interesting timing, as there are now at least two confirmed instances of Seattle PD tracking down people who recorded them using excessive force, days after the fact, and arresting them on extremely suspect charges. ("Suspicion of unlawful discharge of a laser pointer." Seriously. That was for the guy who videoed them pepper-spraying a 9-year-old kid.)

That's the spirit, Amazon. Yeah, this seems more like public interest than public relations, doesn't it?

Well it's ended up as a tool for some or one state to ...instigate a social point system. So there are legitimate fears that it could lead to similar elsewhere. A fair concern, and I'm sure the right would be even more outraged than the liberals should that happen. It needs curbs boundaries to ensure at least a monicommon of personal freedom within a framework of legal protection.

I can't believe how many people are anti-police or so triggered they can't think straight. Police are needed to keep the majority of the population safe from the bad elements. Gangs, and hate groups and individuals who don't follow the social accepted norms. "Thieves, robbers, rapists, murderers, trespassers etc."

Hopefully not much longer. Rather than "police bad", I want to see a smooth and orderly yet rapid transition to "police gone".

The police are bad at this, though. We need to abolish the police, and replace it with a community-led, taxpayer funded organisation that keeps the peace, keeps citizens safe and prevents crime, as well as solving crimes that cannot or have not been prevented.

I'm open on ideas on what to call this organisation.

Yes. It’s the literal Big Brother. Who would want to live in a police state like the Chinese? I hate all the cameras and the tracking of people’s identity and activities on the Internet. Technology is doing such good for the world but it’s also being used to control and dehumanize us.

This shouldn’t be about being anti-police. Shouldn’t be just the concern of groups concerned about it being used to target people based on race.

It should be about recognizing this is a powerful technology that could be used to great harm by whomever against whomever.

Not event the staunchest supporter of the police would want to allow them unrestricted use of any powerful technology - say wiretapping tech for instance.

I’m not sure the potential extra safety is worth the trade off in surrendering more of our privacy, or in running the risk of this technology being abused by tomorrow’s managers of the technology. Certainly not without a real discussion. What happens as these technologies becomes increasingly inteconnected? AI to facial recognition technologies to databases, to your phone’s gps info, to your Internet browsing data, to drone surveillance info ? Are we sure we will always trust those who will own the keys to these systems? You may be in the “safe group” today. Tomorrow?
