Trump gives tax cuts to those that don't need them, i.e, corporations flush with cash and the rich, and then slaps tariffs on things normal people by, which means normal people will pay more for those things. Trump's tax hikes are coming.
CrazyJoe
If I were the Chinese, I would unload the $1.3 Trillion of US government debt that I hold and promise not to buy any more until the tariffs are lifted.
Then lets see what happens to interest rates as the market is flooded with bonds and the Treasury tries to finance the $1+ Trillion deficit that the GOP caused with its tax cuts to the 0.5%.
Of all people, Trump should know what happens when you p**s off your lenders.
Dango bong
and yet...the economy, jobs, wages and consumer spending are all historically high....
katsu78
Thanks Obama.
katsu78
Yes, I'll just run out and buy a TV made in America as opposed to... oh wait.
sunfunbun
Buy only American, if you want to limit both quantity and quality of goods, now and particularly in the future.
katsu78
When did the GOP abandon the free market for Juche ideology?
sunfunbun
Time will tell you that the economics of Trump will fail after his stop gap of raising taxes, going further into debt, trade wars, allies being alienated and having less regulation take full effect. It'll take another Obama like save of a Republican mistake, like the housing crisis caused by deregulation of a Republican administration. Then the Republicans will blame any Democrat because the economy sucks, caused by Trump and Republicans. The cycle continues.
commanteer
Obviously, he does. Basic rule of lending: If you owe the bank a million dollars, you are in their power. If you owe the bank a billion dollars, they are in your power. Of all people, the Chinese know what would happen if they flooded the market with their US government Ponzi bonds.
JeffLee
They are right. China's grand strategy is to become self-sufficient and dominant globally in the most important and strategic technologies and industries by 2025. This is what the neo-lib free-traders don't understand -- and also that China's global dominance is being orchestrated by a communist dictatorship.
If people in the West care about their kids' future, they need to do something about this now.
Silvafan
This is what happens when a petty person becomes president. They try to use their position to get back at his perceived enemies. How convenient it is that Ivanka closed up shop in China before all of this started.
This whole joke of a presidency is because Pres. Obama roasted him at an event. The country has been suffering ever since.
This might hurt China short term, but long term this will hurt the US. Especially, if China calls repayment of US debt. I wonder if Dump thinks that he can just bankrupt another business (US) and bail on the creditors(citizens) like he usually does.
Schopenhauer
I think Trump's strong attitude to China is correcting China's bad manners in trade and other matters. They must learn rules of the world. It is only Trump's U.S. which China will listen to. I wish arrogance of instant rich China will be corrected.
Dango bong
People who work, earn money, invest in the stock market and despise illegal aliens are not suffering at all. They are actually pretty happy.. It is the social justice warriors on twitter and the crooked media that are suffering...
Netgrump
Yep, on the rise since Obamanomics :)
bass4funk
I can think of another President that did such a thing......ahem...
Can your prove that was that was the motivating factor?
No, it was because Trump was tired that Americans were getting ripped off by China and that the Democrats and even the Republicans for years said nothing and allowed middle America to spiral slowly into deeper debt and the erosion of the blue collar working man.
Actually, both countries can't live without each other at this point and China knows that as well, so if China did this they would be cutting their own throats.
Utter nonsense, please stop reading Mother Jones and the Nation.
Netgrump
Silly comment based on the search for a scapegoat and a lack of knowledge :)

Do you have evidence it wasn't? You guys love the debunked Uranium One conspiracy but refuse to consider Trump self dealing?! Wow. Just wow.
Where's your proof? If Trump cared about blue collar workers, he wouldn't have stuffed any in business. But we know that isn't the case.
goldnugget
American products are great, people just associate products = made in China. I think those days are over as there is a lot of good competition in the world today. Many countries including the U.S. make great things. Fair and free trade is the correct way.

For the most part, any factories moved out of China will go to other low wage countries, not the US. Americans will not work at jobs that do not offer a wage that can support them in America.
Trump doesn't understand trade, and is engaging in a lose-lose exchange with China. The Chinese economy will be hurt, but so will the American economy, as Americans pay more for goods, and as American jobs are lost because of the Trump trade war. General Motors, Boeing, farmers, ranchers, and the high-tech industry will all suffer.
Eventually, after the idiot sexual predator and unindicted co-conspirator is removed from office, the dumb trade war will end. Until then, we all will suffer the consequences of Putin's Puppet doing what he can to destabilize the world.
Silvafan
The only winners will be big business. We learned from the last economic collapse that Pres. Obama actually repaired and reversed that this will cause the economy to tank again.
This should be fine for big business up to a point. At its core big business doesn't actually care how problems are worked out as long as they're worked out in its favor and the economy remains relatively stable. It was already stable before Dump took office for the last 8 years.(Pres. Obama)
The only victories Dump has handed his base has been cultural victories.
In fact, farmers are suffering, wages has decreased, infrastructure is terrible, and spending is through the roof. In addition, to all the crimes and corruption in the WH, he doesn't have his border wall!
He hasn't accomplished anything since he came into office that didn't involve him trying to take credit for other people's success.(Pres. Obama)
Dump has a history of shady business practices that will eventually lead to his impeachment. He has lied over 5,000 time since becoming president. Why would it make sense to listen to him?
FizzBit
Good! Keep it up Don. China should have never beeen allowed to gain a position over democracies. Sell out politicians. I see the wonderful G$$gle just made a deal with the Chinese government to make it easier for them to spy and track their own citizens. Google should be kicked out of the US for doing this. This was the last G$$gle straw for me. DuckDuckGo!
Silvafan
Oh, gas prices and the prices of other items are rising. No matter how many tax cuts we get will help us.
Kaishu
Example?
Spin or deflect.
Better to be ripped off by an American, I suppose. Trump is famous for his shady business dealings.
How many failed business? I guess he paid in full when they went bankrupt.
Strangerland
Part of the problem is that Trump is conflating multiple issues with his trade war with China. One issue is property rights, and this is an area where the US is correct in their stance towards China, and something that does need to be fixed. However, the other issue is the trade deficit, which isn't a problem in the minds of anyone who actually understands how things work. If Trump had not conflated these issues, he would be getting a lot more support insofar as his 'war' attacks
Strangerland
...China for something that they really should not be doing.
YuriOtani
The American people will suffer under the Trump tariffs. Means increased prices and shortages. Just wait until China starts dumping treasury notes and stops supplying the US with rare earth metals. Then add in messing up American company operations in China.
JeffLee
@Netgrump
A silly response to a post based on a couple of irrefutable facts. :)
drlucifer
U.S citizens have been able to lead a high standard of living as compared to other countries of
the world due to the cheap products from China and we all know that U.S companies cannot overnight
start manufacturing those products and some had moved all their production to china and it is not as simple as off rooting a factory in China and re-planting it in the U.S and bang re-starting production.
It takes years of planning and staff education.
At the end it is the average US consumer who suffers having to fork out more for products without a comparable increase in income.
drlucifer
The U.S is to blame for the loss of Intellectual property rights to China rather than china and this is
because of greed to make money and lack of regulations.
The vast majority of labs in the U.S have mostly Chinese and Indian post docs why because they are
prepared to work for even 25,000 dollars per annum hence those running labs look for chinese or indians.
and some of the chinese head back to China with the technology acquired in the U.S.
There should be a quota as to the number of citizen of a particular country that a lab is supposed to recruit
if not the trend will continue.
Silvafan
Yep, you will see the same at a lot of R/D departments in Japan. I personally have.
This trade war will also affect Japan.
SuperLib
But certainly not tired enough to stop his own manufacturing there. I’m sure they twisted his arm, just like down in a Florida where he imports foreign workers while his base tells us America is too full for refugees.
SuperLib
There are two issues here, one is the trade deficit and the other is Made in China 2015.
The deficit is largely fueled by Americans like Trump manufacturing in China then importing back into the US. By cutting out American workers he makes more money. And when things like iPhones are made in China and sold in China that doesn’t count as an export so it’s not reflected in the numbers. So the numbers aren’t always what they appear to be.
The Made in China 2025 issue is a legitimate threat and the US and the rest of the world should make moves to counter it. Strong ones, if necessary.
SuperLib
If I type 2015 one more time...
drlucifer
The difference between the US and Japan is that in the US some of the labs are run by
Americans of chinese descend and though they are Americans one doesn't know where
their allegiance is.
In the case of Japan, I don't think there are foreigners let alone alone chinese in labs dealing
with cutting edge or sensitive tech.
Goodlucktoyou
@crazyjoe. You are spot on. Except the worldwide recession will effect more than the orange man.

Thanks Obama! The only thing liberals claim he did that he actually did. Obama’s legacy IS Trump.

"with China announcing retaliatory tax increases on $60 billion worth of U.S. imports, including coffee, honey..."
Whoever's buying the Kona coffee and the high-end U.S. honey in China can certainly pay the increases, though they'll be pissed at the Chinese government.
I like Trish Regan's commentary in this interview with former Reagan economic adviser Art Laffer on the White House considering an additional $200 billion in tariffs on Chinese products entering the U.S.
