Would he have done that in his own country?

He would have never been stabbed in Texas for that. They directly shoot you in the head.

His life would have been saved if Thailand had carry and conceal laws.

Would he have done that in his own country?

Probably.

Carter got angry when the band played ‘Hotel California’ instead of the song he requested

Hard to top that song, but what did you have in mind?

And people wonder why Americans are often considered arrogant when overseas.

Did he want to belt out "Proud To Be An American "?

He should have sung "One Night In Bangkok".

Unfortunately some americans when outside of their country behave like if they own the place.

Few days ago I attended a concert of an american band and like 30% of the audience were also americans, most of them normal people, but behind us we had a group that kept talking very loud during the whole concert about random stuff....so loud that everybody around could hear them louder than the band...of course no japanese complained although you could see in their faces how bothered they were... Finally some other foreigners, myself included, turned around looking at them and doing a "shhhhhhh" sound to see if they get it and turn down the volume of their conversations but I guess they either didnt get it or just didnt care... At some point even one of them started to say out loud "nobody tells me to shut up, nobody!"....

Hope someday someone teach them the hard way to respect others....as I said, its just a few of americans that do things like this but this is the image people have of the average american thanks to them....

"Did he want to belt out "Proud To Be An American "?"

"Sow me the way to go home" might have been more appropriate!

"Tourists" from any country are an embarrassment. They expect behavior that is tolerated at home to be ok everywhere. I've seen people from almost everywhere acting against local customs when on travel, not just Americans.

"Travelers" are a different breed. Considerate of others, considerate of local customs.

When I was younger, I was a "tourist." I like to think that I've changed into a traveler the last 10 yrs.

Being too drunk is never good, especially overseas. Regardless, physical violence is never ok.

Some people lose it when intoxicated, not just Americans. Unfortunately Carter lost his life as well.

As I FULLY EXPECTED from EVERYONE that has so far posted, you all BLAME this guy for his own MURDER. ...not UNlike blaming a woman for her own RAPE. Yes, you all never fail to AMAZE, " Dear Readers / Posters ".

Hotel California? That song is too long to begin with. Anyway, killing a guy over such a minor thing is way over the top, and they will be punished harshly, I would think.

I've noticed that tends to be true with any tourist, especially ones that travel in a group of friends.

A good song is never too long Smith. Never.

'Hotel California' is a great song, their 2nd best after 'Desperado'.

There actually was a Chinook heli during the Vietnam war by that name. Got the Fujimi model of it.

Either way may he rest in peace now. We may call the shots but the reaper collects us all in the end.

Nah, Life in the Fast Lane was by far the best :p

When you are a tourist or a soldier, you become a Grass-root Ambassador representing your own country as well.

No fool like an old fool (drunk too to boot). Not saying he should have been killed over it, but definitely asking for trouble. I wonder what will happen to the one who stabbed him with the pole.

He probably asked for Hotel Texas...

but I guess they either didnt get it or just didnt care... At some point even one of them started to say out loud "nobody tells me to shut up, nobody!"....

If they dare do it in my country after verbal warning, they'd be seriously beaten by locals. A lesson "how-to-behave-overseas-for-dumb-tourists". And it would be a completely right thing, IMHO.

Sounds like a guy who would have had his rear end handed to him back in Texas as well although it's common enough that a "stabbing" wouldn't have occurred. Maybe just a few teeth knocked out.

Anyone who listens to AFN Radio Eagle 810 will have heard the message asking the US forces here not to be "loud, obnoxious Americans" so they obviously know they have a problem.

Secondly, I have NEVER heard Hotel California sung well at karaoke.

probably not, since you can get killed for lot less offense in some 'hoods in NYC.
