Desert Tourtise: those are fine things to do for you, if that is how you assess the risk to you and your family.

I don't. My assessment is different, so my behavior is different. I won't tell you how to behave, you do me the same courtesy. What I don won't affect you and vice versa.

People with elderly relatives in their care should take more precautions. As they would with any winter season approaching and any viral bug spreading around. This isn't the bubonic plague we are dealing with, or even the Spanish flu. Spanish flu killed the equivalent of 200 million people, most young and healthy otherwise. Yet covid has taken nearly a year to spread to 4% of the American population. Of that 4%, few have serious illnesses or pass away. Less than one tenth of one percent of the American population has died with covid in their system. And of them, according to the CDC only 6% can be attributed to Covid exclusively.

So for me, it is a risk worth taking. I am not going to live my life in fear or paranoia. I am not going to see my quality of life suffer over something that has less chance to kill me than a car accident. Covid exists, but is just one in a myriad of potential dangers that aren't worth losing sleep over.

The only reason a lot of people refuse to wear mask is because of Trump. No other country has this unreasonable hate towards wearing it. Why Trump hates it? Because Democrats are pushing for it.

But where and when? That is the key.

Look, I get it. I hate wearing a mask, too. I live in a rural town, not many people about during the day, if I go out on my bicycle I don't wear a mask, when I'm walking the dogs I don't wear a mask, when I'm in the car I don't wear a mask, when I'm at home I don't wear a mask.

If I go anywhere there are people - in a shop, in a local meeting, any kind of gathering, indoors or out - I wear a mask.

I would say a quick rule of thumb would be, if you are likely to come within spitting distance of another human being, wear yer mask.

The reality is that, unless you are elderly or seriously infirm, the odds of a serious Covid problem are quite low.

Unless you're one of the young and supposedly healthy people who have very mild to no Covid symptoms, and then end up struggling for months with Long Covid.

That makes almost no sense at all anymore. It’s like ‘let’s lock away all matches and cigarette lighters for 100 days’ while all houses in the area are on fire and heavily burning already.

Wearing masks could help stop more people dying.

It’s that simple.

Put a mask on. It’s no great sacrifice.

So what are the "right things", pray tell?

Wear face masks religiously outside of your home. Keep six feet away from everyone all the times outside of your own home. Wash your hands frequently. Disinfect your home daily. Disinfect the car too every day (maybe especially the car since drivers pick their noses then operate dials on the radio or HVAC). Bring wipes with you and sanitize shopping carts and anything else you touch while shopping. Same thing at the gas station, sanitize everything you touch on the gas pump. Don't go out unless absolutely necessary. Don't eat in restaurants. Don't go to sports events, movies, concerts etc. Choirs are a no no, you spray aerosols further singing than just breathing or even talking. Choirs are superspreader events. No indoor church services. No movie theaters. Minimize travel. I'm doing all of these things and it isn't killing me or my family. It's called adult restraint. Learn some. I really have no more patience for people who refuse to take the precautions necessary to end this pandemic.

wear a mask until data tells us if we can become infectious post-vaccination.

I would love to get the 2nd jab and chuck my mask in the trash, but that might not be how it works. It could be that the vaccine may prevent illness but not infection. We don’t know yet. And if one gets infected, is it possible to shed the virus? Again, we don’t know yet.

The data will be in around fall next year. Until then, get vaccinated, wash your hands, wear a mask in public and REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE A MEMBER OF SOCIETY and act like it.

Because people realise that wearing a mask is just plain common sense.

I’d add considerate to that. My sister is in her forties and is now looking after my elderly mother. My sister isn’t in the high-risk group, but my mother certainly is. My sister fears maskless morons giving Covid to her which she could pass on to my mother.

This is not virtue-signaling.

Whining children throwing tantrums about wearing masks need to grow up. There is hope here.

The freedumb boneheads are a lost cause.

Yes Cleo, of course. But where and when? That is the key. There is no medical or safety reason to wear a mask when you are in your car alone, or walking down the street, or in a public park.

The reality is that, unless you are elderly or seriously infirm, the odds of a serious Covid problem are quite low. In Canada, something north of 80 percent of Covid deaths are in nursing homes.

Wear a mask and wash your hands. You've been being told this for months and months. How long does it take to sink in?

I say to isolate and quarantine vulnerable people like the elderly and let the rest of us, who are at very low risk of any serious illness, get on with our lives.

Fine, no problem, just put on a mask and get on with your life. That's all you're being asked to do. (There are plenty of people who didn't think they were vulnerable who are now having to cope with Long Covid. I hope you don't join them.)

Japan has done very will with no mandates and no enforced lockdowns.

Last Easter, it was "just 2 weeks" shutdown to bend the curve of viral spread. Not to eliminate infections ( that is impossible), just to bend the curve.

Then in the summer it was "just 20 days" stay indoors, no going to the beach or parks or travel or restaurants.

Now, a hundred days with a mask? Forget it. Especially when outdoors, there is no need at all to wear one. They have become a new form of virture signalling more than anything.

Yep, because a lot of smart scientifically educated people like you refused to do the right things. The scientists also warned us fall and winter would be rough if we didn't do everything right in the spring and summer. Well enough people thought they were either smarter than the scientists or just didn't care enough to do what the scientists all told us to do. Now we pay.

I am so happy Biden won. So far, the US has about 150,00o dead that we ought to have had.

Because Trump.

-1 ( +7 / -8 )

If individuals are intelligent they will continue to wear face masks of more than the 100 days after Mr. Biden's inauguration. This pandemic will be with us until next fall at least before things start to return to normal.

Within Trump's base expect the 'call' to fall on deaf ears. Trump's base includes millions who believe what some quack posts on Qanon and what has been written by a troll army keyboard warrior in Moscow (or one of the Kremlin's satellite bases), Beijing, Ankara, Tehran or another place where their government wants to help Trump further undermine the US.

Those 'Americans' not wearing masks and not practicing social distancing are helping Trump and his 'foreign' backers accelerate the decline of the US.
