TIME didn't choose Donald J, Trump, American television personality? How strange is that?

Congratulations to an extraordinary leader and the People of Germany!

Merkel. Meh,

6 ( +8 / -2 )

Sabbath, this is the first time ever I have disagreed with you. 2 wonderful things this great leader has done: 1. most important, providing safe haven to hundreds of thousands of syrian refugees. 2. the renouncement of nuclear power after fukushima

Trump has already tweeted his disappointment that he was not chosen (CNN). What a narcissist! Angela Merkel deserves the honor. Trump should be given the title of "Windbag of the Year".

Hear, hear!

Aly

Oh, I think she's doing an ok job. And I like her policies.

But Person of the Year? The most consequential person of 2015?

Meh.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

What?? Merkel should be given the Darwin award as "The Looser of the Year" for the flood of benefit-seekers that swamped Germany. She planted a ticking time bomb under that once wonderful country.

But Person of the Year? The most consequential person of 2015?

But Sabbath, as opposed to who? I would venture to say she is the greatest leader today. Her defiance toward the nuclear industry and islamophobes and her hard stance against some fierce opposition deserves her the award. She showed great leadership.

Angela Merkel named Time's Person of the Year

Meanwhile, all those refugees who haven't been deported are roaming Germany. Its a terrible situation.

Merkel should be given the Darwin award as "The Looser of the Year"

What's a 'looser'?

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Person of the year. That's definitely debatable.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

LoL. . . "The Loser of the Year."

I'll say. Like how the chickens came home to roost, recently, forcing her and other top officials to cancel a soccer game amid "security" concerns. . . and "fear."

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

@Asakaze"Merkel should be given the Darvin award".

Indeed. That editor, Mrs Gibbs has unique sense of humour.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Quite a few are not too impressed here. I suppose you'll never get close to unanimity on a decision like this but does anyone name a better candidate? They must have someone more deserving in mind.

From Wikipedia:

Person of the Year (called Man of the Year until 1999[1]) is an annual issue of the United States news magazine Time that features and profiles a person, group, idea or object that "for better or for worse...has done the most to influence the events of the year".[2]

I think she's deserving of the award.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

"for better or for worse" - in that sense -"worse" - merkel is entirely deserving. The future will show she doomed germany, if not western europe as well.

Give her the nobel peace prize next to put the final nail in the coffin of that institutions credibility too.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

The Time Person of the Year is not an award - it's a recognition, for good or ill, the person who had the most impact on the world that year. If your lives are affected by that person, positively or negatively, that's an impact.

Donald Trump's impact is mostly just locally, in the US. Since he has no official standing on foreign policies, his impact abroad is mostly limited to just words and speeches.

I knew the rightists would carry on getting bitchy and catty about this without offering a better choice. Stop meowing and screeching and tell us who you think is more deserving.

What difference does it make? Whatever name we throw out there, will be attacked from every angle by the left. So why hassle? Let's just bash Merkel and the idiots who came up with her for "Person of the Year."

"What difference does it make? Whatever name we throw out there, will be attacked from every angle by the left. So why hassle? Let's just bash Merkel and the idiots who came up with her for "Person of the Year.""

This is what Obama is facing. Let's just keep bashing away without concerning ourselves too much about an alternative idea because we don't have one.

It's just that ridiculing this choice does seem to indicate you believe there far more deserving recipients. Come on, stick your neck out. You can take a bit of criticism if it comes your way. You're a big boy now, aren't you?

LoL, cat got me Jimizo . . . . what say me now? Welcome to the human race. Filled with its wars, disease, poverty and now radical islam.

Nobody comes to mind. . . .wait, how about those american dudes who prevented a whacked-out islamic extremist armed with an AK on that train in France?? Ohh my, but even that was in vain. Eventually their fellow islamic "brethren" sealed the deal in Paris 11/13.

@Strangerland

What's a 'looser'?

It means she such a lo-o-oser with her so-o-o inept immigration policy.

@yamashi

That editor, Mrs Gibbs has unique sense of humour.

Or may be he secretly happy that the great economic rival goes down with all the hordes of freeloaders Merkel allowed in.

@ohara

Good point. Fully agreed,

"Nobody comes to mind. . . .wait, how about those american dudes who prevented a whacked-out islamic extremist armed with an AK on that train in France??"

At last! Not a bad choice. Didn't the US media bother to mention the British guy involved in that incident? ;)

Didn't the US media bother to mention the British guy involved

They probably did. But I'm so tunnel visioned on america and it's safety these days, I missed that detail. Go Tories! Go!

Next Nobel Committee will be choosing Angela Merkel for Nobel Peace prize for 2016 at expense of German peoples.

So...it´s been some time I placed a comment here, but it´s time to do so again.

As a German guy I actually can´t understand all the opinions which are going around concerning the refugee issue in foreign countries... What about taking in 1 or 1.5 Million people into your country which share a different religion and/or mindset? Germany did so before twice in it´s younger history...in the 1960s we took in several hundred thousand people from South and Souteast Europe...In the 1990s we "took in" 16.5 million East-Germans which shared a very different - a communist - mindset...Did it proof to be a disadvantage to Germany? No...Did Germany crumble? No... Did Europe crumble? Obiously not... So what about 1 to 2 Million people from another region? We are going to make the best out of it...just as always. And please don´t be too concerned with all the rightsided or leftsided people with pretty loud voices...they´re just a minority within a minority... In most of the German population those guys are considered "Only Bark and no bite"...

An Angela Merkel as a Leader? Well...I don´t even elect her Party...but as a political leader she is the right person at the right time at the right spot...enough said...Greetings from Germany!

0 ( +1 / -1 )

@Koppjaegga"So what about 1 to 2 Million people from another region?".

So what about 1 to 2 Million of say, ISIS sympathizers and supporters of radical islam in the heart of Europe? I thought you were smarter, Euros. I was wrong...

"We are going to make the best out of it".

Not you. They are going to make the best out of creation Islamic Chaliphat in Europe and training bases of Islamic radicals and terrorists. And you're digging your graves by your own hands.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Jimizo, don't bother. All the right wingers want to do is howl and scream about the problems the left has fictiously created, forgetting conveniently that all of the world's problems actually come from the right. They're all about military intervention for "humanitarian reasons" (even when these reasons are false) but refuse real humanitarianism to help asylum seekers after they have destroyed their countries for them.

Merkel deserves that prize. Germany never agreed to go to war in Iraq. It opposed it and is still anti military intervention while at the same time humanely taking in refugees. What's not to admire about this kind of policy.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

@Yamshi: Whoa there...1 to 2 million ISI sympathizers? Where did you get that numbers? In some "All foreignes are enemies" newsletter? Are you actually Donald Trump?

Are you really listening to your own words? So if they are all ISI sympathizers...Why even leave the area in the first place?? Never thought about it?

Islamic Chaliphat in the heart of Europe? Nope...don´t think so.

Ah well...there are some people you can´t argue with on a factual level...have a nice day!
