Seems the mainland isn't going to back down on this fight. They are willing to use fear tactics in order to fully bring Hong Kong under their control. I am proud of the people of HK for being strong enough to stand up for their rights and fight for what they want. This fight and the dangers that happened seem like it may only be the beginning.

Interestingly, no police officers in sight during the assault. How does a group of men carrying bats and metal poles walking through the city go unnoticed? CCP isn't even trying to hide their involvement in this

by a mob of suspected triad gangsters

Same-old tactics: a repressive regime gets its gangsters to goon for them. What's behind the relationships between the CCP and the triads?

There are video proof of the police going away when those thugs arrived. Multiple citizen have called the police to which they have been told "stay at home if they are scared". 2 hours later the thugs disappeared and magically the police arrived.

Mainland China sending in the thugs and the shameful HK government & police allowing assaults against their citizens...

What's behind the relationships between the CCP and the triads?

Before the CCP it was the Kuomintang: Chiang Kai-shek used his triad connections to sweep socialists and unionists from Shanghai in 1927. It was a very, very bloody purge with hundreds of deaths.

The secretive minions of the White Lotus Society of yore still live on in modern times, it seems.

Positive thoughts and wishes to the people of Hong Kong, who are fighting to preserve their freedoms against a government that throws millions of its people into concentration camps.

The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice we hope.

@burningbsh China took a page out of the West's playbook

Repressive regimes everywhere hire thugs to do the state's nastiness. Even outside 'the west'.

Anti-government activists who demonstrated against President Vladimir Putin’s inauguration earlier this month have asked for an investigation into beatings by law enforcement officers and Cossack volunteers.

There is even a video showing on e of the pro-establishment officials shaking hands with the Triad. Rule of law is no long exist in HK. It is rule of thugs.

I wonder how many Hong Kong people wish Hong Kong was still a British colony...

Money, nothing more. Pay the goons to go in and bash some skulls but then officially condemn the violence.

I feel bad for the people of Hong Kong. All of this has been out of their hands since 1897. Becoming a British colony, then being handed back to China and having no say in any of it. They're kind of like Taiwan in that they haven't controlled their own destiny since the Qing Dynasty, long out of living memory.

I'm afraid that they have to fight but that they will lose this fight in the end.

Seems like time for Kongers to own Collapsible Batons and learn to defend themselves. Hope it is legal there.

When I think of govts paying thugs, why do Russia, Cambodia, Indonsesia, Bangladesh and China come to mind first?

OTOH, Beijing has been paying thugs to beat protesters for years https://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/oct/04/hong-kong-legislator-accuses-government-triads-against-protesters

^ The police there will arrest the victims rather than the perpetrators. After all, it is pretty obvious that they are colluding with police and government officials.

@willib the country that

Russia's partnering with, too. Belt and Road meets The Eurasian Economic Union.

The mainland China in action... the country that the California big tech supports with their manufacturing base and their cooperation with internet censorship.

Think about that when you enjoy your iphone and mainstream news.

Due to this repression, I refuse to buy any Chinese products-boycott Chinese products!

we can rant and rave here, but the mainland government is going to tighten their grip ever more. i predicted this way back when the UK government handed HK over. I am only surprised it too so long.
