"At a cost of tens of millions of pounds, this pointless piece of theater is a slap in the face for millions of people struggling with the cost-of-living crisis."

Who could say they are wrong for millennia? It persists though..

"The coronation is a celebration of hereditary power and privilege, it has no place in a modern society," Graham Smith, Republic's chief executive, said.

….

That is exactly true!

Polls have shown most Britons back the monarchy but Republic claimed that support was on a "slow puncture."

More aggressively selling a well thought out alternative to it could speed this up. Many pro-monarchists admit the hereditary principle is at the very least curious.

Pro-monarchists keep saying ‘Tony Blair’ as a warning whenever the subject of an elected head of state comes up. Very strange.

A country of over 60 million can come up with someone better than whatever happens to come up from the Windsors.

Costing more than £1 billion when so many are struggling with their costs of living.

In the UK, there is the right to peaceful protest. The final decision rests with the Metropolitan Police Commissioner.

@Rodney. What's stopping you.

These planned demos are a sign of the rumblings in the bowels of Britain that Charles could well be the last of the Mohicans: the stale pomp and pageantry of the anachronistic monarchy and the royal labels slapped on buildings, bridges, streets, ships and on all and anything just reveals the abysmal lack of imagination that props up the pathetic worship of the Windsors.

For a mostly ceremonial role, I'd expect it to be a fondly viewed senior citizen, someone like David Attenborough or Ian McKellan. Possibly a "now seen as a moderate" Tory like Heseltine or Major. There's a great quote from Major doing the rounds about all the Brexiteers like Gove being fundamentally anti-NHS. Major claims it is obvious that such politicians would never protect the service.

Nah. Money well spent. The America's especially love monarchism. Hence King Elvis.

Hotels and plane bookings pond-side have shot up. The world needs a cultural beacon, enter the UK... Congrats King Charlie.

Good shouts. People who achieved things and earned enormous respect from many.

These people criticise the monarchy because the say it is unelected and undemocratic, something forced upon the populace against their will and so on. But actually, the monarchy in the UK would be toast the moment that a majority of people decided that they were against it. Any political party could come along and say that they would do away with it if they got elected - the reason that they don't is that most people in the UK want to keep the monarchy. Even Jeremy Corbyn as leader of the Labour party, a staunch republican, idealistic to a fault, a guy who couldn't even bring himself to sing the national anthem, never put forward getting rid of the monarchy in his manifesto - even he knew that it would be political suicide to do so.

Last time people held up blank signs in the UK, they got arrested. Compare this with those holding up blank signs in China and nothing happened to them.

On another note, Diana is probably rolling in her grave at the mere mention of 'Queen' Camilla.

Fake news, commenter has been misinformed.

Apparently Andrew Windsor is still allowed to use "His Royal Highness".

That's someone who used taxpayer money to pay off an underage trafficked woman who he sexually abused.

This is the true scandal for me. The Harry and Meghan fluff is nothing like as dark as the payoff for this appalling specimen.

What is your point? It is Charles who is being crowned, not Andrew.

Should have ended the whole thing on a high with Liz. I think its going to be pretty hard to top that.

As a non British person I am neither for or against the monarchy, but one thing we have to remember is that its power and money came from the British Empire, the most despotic the world has ever known. Millions died around the world to keep this institution going.

Nonsense.
