25 years after murders, OJ Simpson says 'life is fine'

At the time of the trial I was working at a public hospital in San Francisco, California. Most of my coworkers were black or brown (I'm white) and most of our patients were black or brown as well. I have to admit that I did not care who (cough, cough) won but I'll never forget the cheers and happiness that filled the emergency room waiting room when 'OJ, GOT OFF'. This was a great expierence for me, it let me see first hand the racial devide in my country.

Doubt if any American who was an adult at the time will ever forget the Bronco chase. I'd just moved to California a few months before starting grad school and it was absolutely surreal. A lot of things have surpassed it in slack-jawed madness since, in this age of cell phone journalism, but in 1994 it was pretty wild.

I will at least say he was a great football player.

The families of the victims subsequently filed a civil suit against him, and in 1997 a civil court awarded a $33.5 million judgment against him for the wrongful deaths of his ex-wife and Goldman. Some of his property was seized and auctioned but most of the judgment has not been paid.

Now this really pisses me off to no end.

His televised "Trial of the Century" lasted nearly a year and became a national obsession. He was acquitted by a jury in 1995 and has continued to declare his innocence.

Any rational person who followed the news at the time knows OJ murdered the two of them... the jury verdict was just payback against law enforcement.

He was black ( although he had little regard for the black community). Everybody knew he did it, but it was time to make up for judicial abuses to black defendants. Racism at its most perverse.

He was wealthy enough to afford a trickster lawyer who played a system intended to protect the innocent but which is all too often used to allow the wealthy guilty to get off.

Made up for the injustices suffered by poor people by exonerating a wealthy, famous and privileged person. And it worked. No wonder the US has the politicians it has.

OJ's good life is due to the race card played by Cochran and team which including Alan Dershowitz.

His good life is also due to the tainted Mark Furhman and his total lack of credibility .

Dershowitz went on to defend Mike Tyson and is also on Harvey Weinstein's team, Furhman is a Fox News forensic expert.

Pity, justice is not color blind.

Cochran was a talented lawyer. His entire legal team was talented. The race card isn’t what won the trail.

The race card is what made us celebrate him going free. Too many times the race card worked the wrong way in the American justice system.

The failures and underhandedness by the prosecutorial team is what allowed him to walk free.

Money and fame trump justice in the USA. Simpson at least served some time on a different but risible rap, but that's little consolation to the victims of his brutal killings. He deserves to be living in a homeless shelter after being forced to hand over all his assets.

I agree, the less we really hear from him, the better for the entire country.

I always thought he was guilty, until a few weeks ago when I heard someone providing compelling evidence indicating that his son committed the murder, and Simpson tried to protect him. I am no longer sure OJ did it.

That's basically it. The US is no different than any other corrupt country in that sense. One system of justice for the poor, another for the very wealthy and famous. The only way the poor stand a chance is for their case to be taken up by the media, i.e., become famous.

I strongly believe that justice should be related to society and rehabilitation. Not revenge.

Simpson's original trial was, quite rightly, thrown out for police tampering.

Whether he was guilty or not the LAPD were responsible for the trial going wrong.

If anyone was going to be sued it should have been the LAPD not Simpson - a private trial should never have been permitted, they should have appealed for a retrial if they wanted. Instead of suing for a huge amount of money, they should have gone to retrial for justice.

You just cannot reach a verdict on this guy. Period. I feel like I want to find he got away with murder, but he was tried and not convicted. And I have no proof he did it, much as some media would like to push he did. Maybe he did it. Maybe we'll never know. But maybe he didn't. None of it matters legally as he was found innocent.

FYI: The US legal system does not find defendants "innocent". They are simply "not guilty" based on reasonable doubt. Same difference, but legally quite different.

You are right. I agree and in our system, the prosecution didn’t make a good case, they lost, but nonetheless....

That's how I feel about the president too.
