A sad aspect is the shameful reflection on the professionalism of the Argentine Navy. Why would police need to raid naval bases as part of the investigation? Presumably because someone would have purposefully destroyed records that implicated responsibility. Why would Navy officials have allowed the submarine to go on missions with its many mechanical problems, unless there was some punishment for refusing to do so by those who somehow stood to benefit from repeated dangerous deployments? Those Navy officials "allowing" the deployments should be among those punished for these sailors' deaths.

I don't understand why JT doesn't include maps in stories where geography plays such a key role.

Looked up the location. Spent some time in Argentina, Chile and Patagonia last year as the vessel was lost. Timing was purely coincidence - it is spring there now. Wouldn't have considered that area off Valdes Peninsula to be "Patagonia" because it is closer to BsAs than the typical, amazing, famous Patagonia areas at the bottom of the continent.

At least, they now have the location, regardless whether or not it's raised.

Salute to the dead sailors. Rest in peace.

The problem is that the Argentine navy is rotting away from miss management and starved of funds due to the economic incompetence of the Kirchner government. Their only type 42 destroyer sank at its moorings due to lack of maintenance.

Given the problems the sub was having I have never seen a good reason why her Captain submerged instead of finishing what was only a transfer from base to base on the surface? At least then some of the crew might have escaped when the explosion occurred.
