What about Japan ??

"Covid policy clearly overlaps with a lot of other political objectives," he told AFP.

….

It certainly does.

China can afford not to blink but other nations can’t.

Rivals? Who edited the subject known as the topic in English?

Xi reelected? As what? Double permanent dictator for life? This article makes no sense.

China's leaders will hold a gathering in October at which President Xi is expected to secure a third term...

Only a few more hours to go then.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam has said restoring travel to the mainland is "more important" than reopening internationally and that the city needs to be even stricter than authorities north of the border to win Beijing's trust.

Carrie Lam has totally sold herself to Beijing and has betrayed the people of Hong Kong.

One American who works for an asset management firm said his family had to undergo mandatory quarantine when someone in his building tested positive. He said he had gone from being an optimist at the beginning of the pandemic to a "deep pessimist".

I suggest that the American go take a look at the US. Then , he can be a very deep pessimist.

Carrie Lam is a commie authoritarian, as are all the executive of rotten Hong Kong, China.

Anyone who stands up for freedom and democracy in the police state of HK suddenly "disappears", and is sent to the mainland.

Any foreign business that plans to have a base in HK going forward deserves to fail. The smart ones are rapidly getting out.

Imagine that - Covid being exploited by an authoritarian regime. Whatever next?!

Hong Kong as it was, is history, a little before it was inevitably going to happen. Get out whilst you can, and help others to escape.

Incidentally, I don't see Japan opening up any time soon.

Ms. Lam's orders come straight from Beijing and they are intended to minimize the importance of and the long-term viability of the city. Eventually it will be just another port city in China, with the international community and many former residents in the diaspora in Canada and England.

This article appears to be contradictory

A zero-covid strategy is not sustainable. Ultimately, something's got to give.

The smart Honkies saw the writing on the wall in the 80s and 90s and those who could afford to went to Canada, Australia etc. and stayed long enough to gain nationality. (Some could only afford to send their children.) Many came back to HK but carrying another passport gave them a Get Out Of Jail Free card.

That choice has sparked alarm as executives find themselves increasingly struggling to retain talent and replace those that are leaving.

Take a look at this Japan. This is why you are falling behind in science and technology. I've been waiting for 11 months to get a work visa even though I have a CoE from my Japanese tech company and I started to shy away from the idea to live and work in Japan because of this non-sense xenophobia and closed borders.
