This is a good, positive step. Late in coming, but better late than never. Australia needs to become more bi/multi-lingual.

Teaching of Asian languages at uni has dropped and I am not being flooded by offeres despite being trained to teach Mandarin and Japanese.

Maybe it's because of your command of English? Nah, I'm kidding! Get into it Darren! This is your chance!
