Participating trophy? That is the liberal way. You don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings, do you? No need to be the best to get a trophy.
Alan Harrison
That is amazing. Good luck Vietnam.

Japan has 6% with first shot vaccination, so what are you talking about again?
Commodore Perry
Mass testing along with Trump having the US rush all resources into the largest mass vaccination campaign has contributed to defeating the pandemic in the US.
Vietnam is taking the obvious, most practical steps. Way to go!
Strangerland
Um, so should they all pace to make sure they do it at the exact same rate? We could give everyone a trophy for participation too!
Or we could acknowledge that in the real world, every country will go at a different pace, and therefore it's a logical impossibility that there ISN'T a country that would lag behind. It's literally impossible for them to all go at the same rate.
Septim Dynasty
Japan is pale to either Vietnam or the US.
After Biden came to power, the US rushed all resources into the largest mass vaccination campaign ever. Japan can't even do that with all resources at hand!
A developed country should not lag behind a developing one unless Japan gradually devolves into a developing one.
Victor
Compared to the US and Europe, Japan is lagging a lot - in Covid testing, in Covid vaccines, but more so in Covid deaths!

POPULATION:
Japan 127 million. Vietnam 97 million. Canada: 38 million. New Zealand: 5 million. Australia 25 million.
Egypt 100 million. Russia: 144 million.
PERCENTAGE OF POPULATION FULLY VACCINATED:
Vietnam: 0.1% Japan: 2.5% Australia: 1.9% New Zealand: 4.0% Canada: 5.3% Egypt: 0.3%. Russia: 8.2%
As posted in JT. Australia is sending its softball squad to Japan. With a 1.9% immunized population. Russia, continually there is someone posting about the Sputnik vaccine, ignoring that only 8.2% has been immunized in Russia.
The facts posted, such as the ability to assess testing are quite skewed. Individuals at our school were scheduled the same day for testing, available in Osaka - university where we teach is in Kyoto. The individual lives in Nara Prefecture.
Japan lags, but not by much.

Vietnam can do it ,Vietnam ruling government are Communist, simple no parties fighting in getting the job done.
Pukey2
Japan is an absolute disgrace in comparison.

Keep your eyes in this country over the next decades, thats all I can say.

If more testing was done, the full extent of the pandemic would be apparent, and many who have spent a year downplaying it as a flu, or insisting that vitamin D and some gumption will cure all ills would have to face up to the effects of their harmful rhetoric.

Interesting to see so many people who are anti-testing. I guess the government propaganda worked.
In Japan, once you have a fever, you no longer have an option to get tested, as the out-of-pocket testing centers do not allow people with symptoms to be tested there, and you will be at the mercy of the government who realistically only grant 1-10% of the people who request tests a test depending on # of daily requests vs. their quota.

Government effort to collect information on citizens. Like in parts of the UK where soldiers are visiting houses and forcing people to give DNA samples.

Unlike here, they are not using fax machines, they don't need to stamp hanko on every paper and stamp one hanko over another, report on it, hold a meeting on that, make a report of the meeting, fax it to someone, make a research in case the previous research didn't end as someone expected. Moreover, they most likely don't have the make excuses and blame others culture. Did I forget also "afraid of losing the face"? Japan has the resources to do similar thing in way shorter timespan. It's the leaders we have. Good thing they have time to visit kyabakura and girls bars.. not!

Vietnam has gotten by very well so far because they've taken what seems to be a good science-informed approach. This is a stupid idea from a scientific and economic standpoint. The results are useless if they're at a pace of 100,000/day for 9,000,000 people. They'll never be accurate. Do a lockdown, contact trace, test clusters, and test anyone suspected. If they want to go hard while still respecting people's humanity, follow NZ or Australia's examples.
Aly Rustom
more easily spread than either the UK or India strain?? Yikes!
the second would be my guess
bokuda
poor people, they are having PCR tests and vaccines.
somebody please stop that madness!

What a disheartening waste of resources for a developing economy. And what will it accomplish unless you test all 9 million simultaneously and get the results back immediately? Even then, what will you do with those who test positive? Lock them in boxes? There are ample precedents for lockdowns hard (Wuhan), medium-hard (Victoria, Aus), medium (California), and soft (Japan). They all work in their own ways. Use one of them. I'm glad I'm not there.

Either Vietnam is first world, or Japan is below third world.
Kumagaijin
They also have a better w/l recorded vs the United States.

Wow, this is a huge enterprise and demonstrate a strong will to control the spreading of the pandemic before unnecessary deaths become common, an example to follow.
