Seems like a way authoritarians can eliminate one of the checks and balances on their power.

A crack down of fake news is good as long as the right and freedom of press is maintained.

A crack down of fake news is good as long as the right and freedom of press is maintained.

In principle I agree, but the problem is there are too many lazy consumers who aren't willing to put in the effort to accurately evaluate if news is fake or not. They would rather label a story as fake if it doesn't give the information they want or if they don't like the demographic the news outlet that publishes it targets.

Fake news is fake not because of what it says, but the process it goes through in the course of being researched. Unfortunately, the people who scream "fake news!" the most stridently tend to be right-wing authoritarians who understand this concept the least, and are most likely to use their crack down expressly to eliminate freedom of the press.

That's why I would rather instead of a government crack-down, responsible citizens boycott advertisers who publish fake news.

Also and many times, fake news is fake not because of what it says, but what it doesn't say. News should, in its true sense, provide information of all sides and let the reader make their own conclusions.

Erm, no. News does not have "sides".

Most people, including you Katsu, must surly understand that the CNNMSNBCFOXBBCAPReuters corporate "news" machines are tools of the State, right? And should not be trusted.

Did you not read what I just wrote? Fake news is only fake if it doesn't go through a genuinely journalistic process. To write off every major news publisher as publishing nothing but fake news just because of who they are is to engage in baseless hysteria.

Subterfuge, Hegelian dialectic baked into a narrative based dis-information a.k.a fake news is everywhere, there is hardly any fact based neutral news. Don't blame the head of states.

Now this reminds me of that quote from John Swinton..so relevant today..There is no such a thing in America as an independent press..

What is it about Asian politicians (ie usually elderly men) looking stern and waving their index fingers in the air in every shot you see of them? Abe is a master of this, as is Cambodia's PM pictured here and horrible old Duterte.

while in Myanmar, doctored photos and bogus reports shared on Facebook have fuelled the persecution of Rohingya Muslims.

Most of false news faked photograph and fabricated stories on social media and main stream international news are against Burmese Government, Burmese Military and Buddhist Burmese. Even Turkish Prime Minister had used faked photos for his tweeter which were given to him by Islamic group but he later apologized to Burmese Government for the faked pictures he used in tweeter.

The AP News Agency, Reuters News Agency, BBC, Dailymail, CNN and New York Times, they all have used faked photos and photos from other countries in their false news and fabricated stories about Rakhine State, Burma but they never apology and admit they have made error in their report when the truth was coming out.

The standard of journalism has been corrupted by some journalists who took money from the group of peoples and exchange for reporting false news and fabricated story.

Also the UN Human Rights Agency has been corrupted by Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein leadership. Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein and Middle East Islamic Arab Governments lead the OIC have used the UN Human Right organization for the benefit of the Islamic religion. The UN Human Rights’ High Commissioner Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein has organized and encourage to refugees to tell fabricated stories to journalists. Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein and the OIC was mastermind of the Islamic terrorist group the ARSA attacking on 31Burmese Border Guard Posts and Buddhist villages and killed Buddhist villagers in August last year. Also they encourage the Bengali Muslims to flee Bangladeshi border. Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein used fabricated stories in his report to the UN Security Council and demanding the UN monitor a safe zone in northern Rakhine State for Bengali Muslims. Around hundred of Hindus villagers including children and women were slaughtered by the Islamic terrorist group the ARSA because they refused to convert to Islam religion. However, the AP, Reuters, BBC, CNN and other international news agency are failed to publish about the Islamic terrorist group the ARSA. The international news agencies are biased reporting about Rakhine, state. The Government plans to crack down false news and faked story is good for who do not want to read and watch false news and faked videos and pictures.

a way for liberal elites to spread fear and hatred

@clamenza. You're too smart to fall for that stuff. Why worry?

Also and many times, fake news is fake not because of what it says, but what it doesn't say. News should, in its true sense, provide information of all sides and let the reader make their own conclusions. This has been lost especially with CNNMSNBCFOXBBC.

As I wrote the other day, take the recent MSM parade of talking heads going on and on about Syria, meanwhile, Saudi Arabia which is causing just as much if not more death for women and children in Yemen hardly NEVER gets any talking head parades. Most people, including you Katsu, must surly understand that the CNNMSNBCFOXBBCAPReuters corporate "news" machines are tools of the State, right? And should not be trusted.

Like CNN earlier this week! There was a reporter who apparently picked up a sarin laced backpack belonging to a child in Syria, AND SNIFFED IT! She than claims a slight burning sensation! Sarin gas is odourless! Plus that would either kill you or seriously injury you if you did that!
