If they can't cut it back home there is no magic yellow brick road in another country for them.

They are from countries that have been at war for the last 10 years. I'm sure they are chiefly concerned with living somewhere where they won't have to worry about suicide bombers or family members disappearing in the night. They probably had plenty of money, which they paid to the people smugglers to get them out--the poor have no choice but to stay.

unfortunately, somebody sold those impoverished, undereducated people a bill o' goods, and put 'em on the good ship lollipop. hopefully they will catch the human trafficking cretins responsible.

Question are those Political/Prosecution or Economic Asylum seekers?

Sorry, don"t have much feelings for economic ones who simply want a life that makes more money for them but refuse to go via the correct route(visa, etc).

Exactly right sarahsuz25.

mikehuntez - It's difficult for us to imagine conditions so bad that we would risk everything to get away, but if the choice is between a long voyage on a rickety boat or death for you and your family, which would you choose?

It's not really surprising that people who have survived a decade of war and violence in Iraq and Afghanistan would feel that their children had a better chance of survival in a rickety boat on the ocean than they did where they came from.

It would be another thing if they weren't sailing across the ocean and just trying to cross the border. But they got greedy, and wanted to invade Australia. That's just dumb.

The border of an island is ocean. How else would they cross the border, if not by sea?

mike is correct, the sick people are the ones smuggling them and the parents who brought them. It would be another thing if they weren't sailing across the ocean and just trying to cross the border. But they got greedy, and wanted to invade Australia. That's just dumb.

I get people trying to immigrate illegally. Just don't do something dumb like this.

What is sick is adults that would endanger these kids by taking them on a small overloaded boat into open ocean. They sealed the kids fate as well as their own.

If they were sailing toward Christmas Island, they already would have passed by Indonesia. Why did they skip over Indonesia and head into those dangerous seas instead?

They were apparently people from Iraq and Iran. Very sad news but people will always continue to be willing to take huge risks in order to make a better life for themselves and their families...

had they landed in australia, their lives wouldn't have improved anyway. the locals would've seen to that. australians are notorious bigots.

RIP to all those who lost once again their lifes in search for a better one. I injured myself more than once surfing by rocks, the sea off Christmas Island looked really rough.

An absolute tragedy, RIP to these people. Those people smugglers responsible will surely never be caught/prosecuted, but they deserve the harshest penalties available.

I surf, and being smashed into rocks by giant waves would even take out the best of swimmers. RIP people.
