Some people try to trace evolution all the way back to the "Big Bang". But that begs the question: "Where did the material/conditions/initiation of the "Big Bang" come from? C.S. Lewis, a famous author, set out to prove that there was no God using nature/logic/etc. He later wrote: The more I tried to prove that there was no God, the more I did the opposite.

What a pathetic waste of money.

This is the cutting edge of science. Some people will never get it. Just as we have benefited from understanding atomic particles and waves we will benefit even more as we one day gain a vast understanding of subatomic particles. Money well spent. It will supply a plethora of knowledge that we did not even know about that can be turned into real life technology one day.

Some people might, scientists don't.

But that begs the question

"Begging the question" is exactly what you're doing.

"Where did the material/conditions/initiation of the "Big Bang" come from?

Where did "god" come from, other than the human mind?

What goodDonkey said.

I love how they say there is no chance of a catastrophic accident while at the same time telling us they are entering a new unchartered area of knowledge and discovery. The rest of us are just hoping they haven't miscalculated. And remember the the study of atomics did lead to a bomb which was used.

This produces—on an atom-by-atom scale—7 million times more power than a single atom in a nuclear reaction, Schewe said.

People who say this is a waste of money can think again. Just think of the unimaginable bomb the USA will make out of this.

IRAN: We have nukes now. USA: We have a Proton bomb. IRAN: Lets be friends...BTW...we are gonna sack that jerk Mahmood and we are thinking of building an atom smasher...for science...and peace...can we see the blueprints? USA: Well seeing as we are friends now.... USA:

No doubt we will see ultra-modern technologies coming from these experiments next decades. However, if quantum theory of sub-atomic particles still does what it did since it was "discovered" 100 years ago: to keep secrets to itself, then these scientists who are saying they are about to understand the so-called Big Bang, will not ever uncover the sub-atomic world. Quite the contrary: they will be surprised to realize that there are even more new mysteries out there.

Come on 14 TeV, lets get the big collisions going.

UnagiDon - You don't believe there is a God? I didn't even specify a particular religion. I'd hate to be the one trying to explain to God why I said He didn't exist. But I understand. If there is no God, then there's no judgment, so you can do whatever you want.

"The Beginning?"

If certain people playing with bunker-buster mini-nukes have their way we'll soon understand what "The End" feels like too.

bobbafett - I think if the Organisation Europeenne pour la Recherche Nucleaire do come up with some super military application it is more likely to be kept by the French than provided for the USA. But I doubt it will come to that anyway; this is scientific research for the best possible motive, to understand the universe we live in.

“This is a huge step toward unraveling Genesis Chapter 1, Verse 1—what happened in the beginning,” physicist Michio Kaku told The Associated Press.

I think a lot more people would like to know how it will all end?

I think a lot more people would like to know how it will all end?

Heat death. It's a foregone conclusion.

Good stuff, as usual, UnagiDon.

Sensei, this has been addressed on the "Is there life after death" thread. Please see that discussion.

This can open hope for mankind to liberate itself from this tiny planet to travel around universe using cosmic energy. 7 millions times energy of atomic explosion huh? Michio Kaku has said that the time for mankind to transform level 0 civilisation (using earth resources) to level 1 civilisation(using solar energy) is the most dangerous period because of terrorism .

tclh:

Sorry to disappoint you. It did not mean, that the Energy of 7TeV was generated by the collision. What the article wanted to say that there are 2 particle beams traveling in opposite direction. And one has to feed energy into these beam to make them reach the final energy. In other words, a lot of energy - taken from the electric power network is necessary to keep the particles on their way around and to accelerate them. Then at the collision point kinetic energy is partly converted into matter.

Well the "most glorious event in history" led us to where we are now so I say who cares.

two of the protons collided ,producing 7 trillion electron volts or two protons making energy instead of pounds of uranium..it is clear to me that matter to energy NOT energy to matter, no?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

One protons has a mass, which is equivalent to approximately 1000 MeV (Mega electron volt). Send this once through an electric field of 1MV (1 Megavolt), then it gains kinetic energy of 1MeV.

Send it 1000 times through an electric field of 1MV (1 Megavolt), then it gains kinetic energy of 1000MeV=1GeV. Then the kinetic energy is same as the mass equivalent.

Send it 7 Million times through an electric field of 1MV (1 Megavolt), then it gains kinetic energy of 7000GeV=7TeV. Then the kinetic energy is much higher than the mass equivalent. To build up this energy, it takes time.

However, when such a highly energetic particles collides head-on with another particle of same mass and energy, then the energy is almost instantaneously released.

And this energy then creates new particles, with a mass slightly lower than the energy available.

So the transfer is:

1) energy put into the particles so that they reach 7TeV

2) some particles collide head on

3) kinetic energy is released

4) new particles can be created

5) if there is energy left, it gives radiation (basically light)

Belated thanks Nessie, appreciated!
