And this folks, is why number of infections IS very important, despite what some on here might say. Australia's health system is now being overwhelmed because of the share number of cases, despite Omicron being less severe than Delta.
Sanjinosebleed
Most of them are there for other reasons but just happened to test positive for COVID due to admission protocols!
Rob Nads
The number of hospitalizations is similar to September 2021, but ICU numbers are significantly lower. Carry on.

That strategy stating we could easily ‘live with the viruses’ is bare of any logic and leading to a disaster everywhere where it is applied. So, why did they change to this strategy, although being like a few other countries on quite the better no COVID path all the two years before. I don’t understand that at all, throwing the positive efforts all away and exposing population to disease , LongCovid, organ damage and reduced life expectancy.
Zaphod
So how did those draconian lockdowns work out? Like CCP China, the Australian regime is finding out that you can not eliminate a massively infectious virus that that has natural animal reservoires to boot.

typical talking points of antivaxxers with no scientific or medical evidence to back their pseudoscience,
stick your head in the sand , covid will go away
Happy Day
"Hospitalizations", yeah OK. Gotta love the loose definitions used to instill fear and control.

Not it isnt.
Report from NSW Health in September 2021
https://www.nsw.gov.au/sites/default/files/2021-09/Intensive_Care_Capacity.pdf
ICU numbers are 1/6th of what they would need to be to have a "moderate" impact.
And if your going to prioritise infections, youre basically advocating a lockdown because all the simple measures of containment are already in place.
Not happening.
I wouldnt say most of them, but it has been said by NSW Health and the NSW Health Minister that a "reasonable proportion" fit that bill. So what does that mean?

you could just as easily be talking about the side effects from the vaccines…

Pretty straightforward. A "hospitalization" means a sick person being admitted to hospital for treatment for a problem that's serious enough to warrant it - in this case, complications from Covid-19. Given the strain on resources and the subsequent negative consequences for any administration, why else would anyone be hospitalized?
Not one of you terminally cynical anti-democrats has ever yet explained WHY a mildly social democratic government of the kind that most of us have grown up and which are the norm in Australia and elsewhere would WANT to instil fear and control by the misuse of a major pandemic. What the hell is in it for them?

@Sanjinosebleed
No - but we are not talking about the vaccines - we are talking about Covid, However we all hope that Omicron is a nice diluted variant of Covid, its still preferable to get vaccinated than take the risk.
Wakarimasen
wtf
No one is saying Covid will go away - precisely the opposite, they are saying it is here to stay.
What you seem to be saying is that all these measures will somehow make it go away or at least lessent its impact on society.
Not sure that is working......

Lockdowns worked before Delta, and both the increase in Delta infections and now the Omicron-driven surge have taken place AFTER LOCKDOWNS ENDED. Thanks to taking the virus seriously, and presenting a united front against it, Australia, with a population of 25 million, has suffered a death toll of just over 2,200 people. To take just the most glaring example of Covid mismanagement in a comparable country, the United States, with a population of about 330 million, has suffered more than 825,000 deaths. So the USA has 13 times Australia's population, but 375 times as many deaths from Covid.
But for ideological reasons, to do it the USA Way is what you think Australia should have done, right?
Stop comparing Australia's democratically-elected Federal and State governments to CCP China. You just make yourself look ridiculous.

As someone else mentioned those places "opening up" and trying to live with covid are finding out the costs are worse than the lockdowns to control and restrict the spread.
Health staff over worked, abused and quitting in droves or planing to, testing centers overwhelmed and shutting down, costs to people who catch it and have to isolate and quarantine. The list seems never ending. This is not the normal some were complaining they wanted to get back to when complaining about lockdown restrictions. This is worse. More panic and more tension and people actively being turned away from hospitals. All that and things still getting worse not better.
I miss zero covid policy.

Yes, we have record numbers of cases in eastern Australia. However, the research from South Africa shows the virus will peak in the next few weeks and case numbers will drop quickly. Japan has yet to see the mass-infections of omicron and don’t kid yourselves, they are coming.
Ingvar
That's great. So almost 6 months ago, Covid wasn't a major problem for Australian hospitals. Anything more recent?
Rob Nads
It has been spreading through the country for several weeks. Japan won't even notice when it has come and gone, because nobody wastes time and resources to get tested with no/mild symptoms.
Simian Lane
In terms of leadership , Australia is a dump. Naturally speaking, a beautiful country.
Rob Nads
Backwards thinking again, Peter. The world is moving forward, and you will be dragged along, kicking and screaming, for the ride.
Ingvar
The vast majority of infections in Australia aren't Omicron.
nonu6976
yeah, lets' quote figures from 4 months go, when Omicron did not even exist.

When will the lockdowns start again now things are getting out of control. . I wonder what the odds are at the betting shops ( Australians bet on EvERYTHING not just sports). My odds are on Victoria to go first as that state is the most totalitarian with a Premier that is a strong follower/supporter of China and likes to emulate them.
anon99999
I should add to my previous post to say that Victoria also has the most people who love and support lockdowns for COVID ( other than WA of course) but they may try and wait till after the tennis as sport goes first if possible.
Rob Nads
Fair prediction, but I would put my money on that hideous Anna Palaszczuk to politicize things and be the first to enforce lockdowns. (The hermit kingdom of WA is so far behind the times that it is not worthy of consideration)
Sanjinosebleed
Funny I thought Japan had been open the whole time. Doesn’t seem to be too much trouble there other than what the fear mongers try to spread…

So far only three people agree with your assessment @Rob Nads.
When people believe public safety is backwards thinking like you do, then we are really in trouble. Glad it has not gotten to that point yet.
Doc
Pandemic of the vaccinated . When will they figure it out?
They are in the US, and are rapidly figuring out they been had.

anon9999:
The same old laughable comparisons between democratic Victoria and totalitarian China as made by other educationally-challenged posters. Do you people actually believe your own BS? I see too that you also predicted last year that Victoria would not be lifting its lockdown until early 2022. Hmm, think you got that one wrong too…
Bronco
He's right.
If you're vaccinated and you made that decision from the perspective of attempting to do the right thing I applaud you.
However, at this point if you still insist on promoting discrimination, hate and vitriol towards people who chose differently I respectfully ask you consider if you're doing the right thing.
If your own conscience isn't enough to stop the discrimination take note that the tide is turning and the internet is recording all of your nasty comments towards your fellow human beings.
Rob Nads
All the state managed to do is become a laughing stock both domestically and internationally. The only people oblivious to this are those unfortunate enough to be trapped there as residents.
