Bit rude to only lockdown the weary residents.

@ goodlucktoyou
Hope things improve for you in your home country.

And you know this as a fact because....?

This yo-yo will keep on going up and down unless enough are vaccinated and Australia is not doing well on that front just like Japan.

I just talked with a friend in Melbourne over Zoom.
People accept this for what it is.
They aren’t happy (who would be?), but they understand why it is being done.
People can go outside an exercise (for a limited period of time each day) and do essential shopping. Here’s the official guidelines:

@ Northernlife
I didn’t say they were happy about it. And I think financial support should be offered for those affected, money that will come from the taxes I pay.
@ Gooch
I’m not entering any political debate about this. You’ve made your views clear on this matter in earlier posts.
However, I’m sorry the country Victorians you know are mad.

A few days ago another poster here said, the Aussies like it like it is.
According to that poster the Aussies are OK with the lockdown.

1 billion dollars lost (if it lasts only a week not longer) but posters on JT said Australian economy is dong so well, so I guess it is just a drop in the bucket for the fantastic Australian economy or in particular the Victorian economy,
but the much loved Victorian government, the only one in Australia to have such harsh lockdowns, is begging the federal government for handouts as there is pressure on them to compensate the many businesses losing that billion dollars.
Are the people of Melbourne weary, they seem to fully support their government and happy to do these lockdowns eventhough they are the only place in Australia to do them like that, with other states particularly NSW handling it very differently . You get what you vote for.

@ Vreth
I can see this, Vreth.
I can’t see why others don’t realize that these 39 cases will multiply if nothing is done.

Really?! A bit of an overreaction on your part, I think.
My family and friends in Melbourne - and most of the citizens - are not of that opinion, and that’s all that matters.
@ Antique:
I agree that far more Australians need to be vaccinated.
However, they can be vaccinated easily and have inoculation sites carrying out the procedures.

Oh, and I still strongly disagree that Melbourne is a ‘hellhole’ as someone previously stated. That’s pure hyperbole.

The fact that a country has done wonderfully until now, as Australia has, sadly leads it to be helplessly exposed. Since nobody got sick and there have been few vaccinations, Australia is extremely vulnerable: nobody has antibodies.
Good luck when all those athletes and hangers on drag their medals home from Tokyo. Vaccinated or not they can and will bring back the virus.
Fools gold.

Like the rest of the world we would much prefer covid to just go away, but it wont. When cases are beginning to be out of control, then measures to regain control are needed. I am living in Melbourne and have lived through all the lock downs. I agree with them all and my neighbors though weary, are also stoic and understand life returns to normal when the lockdown ends.
This pandemic is nobodies choice. How we maintain control over it "is" our choice. We will continue to lock down as needed, until it is not needed. We dont mind others not understanding the logic, because we do. Saving lives is what makes us a civilized people. If we did not value peoples lives like we do, we would be no different to any other species of animal on the planet.

However frustrating the situation is in Japan, I would still rather be here than melbourne

What people dont realise is this virus is hear to stay, we will never totaly irradiate it, unfortunately we are going to have to live with it, like cancer and one or two other nasty diseases, unfortunately locking down every time it raises its ugly head wont solve a thing, but what it will create is mental health issues, financial hardship and bankruptcy, and possibly social stigmas

That works splendidly if done as it has to be done. Anyway, the problem is, especially for the owner, that you can dismantle the hotel building in the near future. Who wants to check in into such a place full of virus loads and who wants to be quarantined in such a place after quite a virus load has already accumulated? That’s near to suicide in any case.
Gooch
Victoria is run by a socialist-left government who seem to get off on control. Even with the toughest lockdowns they had the highest death toll in the country, as opposed to a moderate right government in NSW with a bigger population but far lower death toll and much lighter restrictions. I know people in country Victoria who are a long way from Melbourne and mad about having to lock down for a week.

39 cases, really? thats nothing, i would say there is more road traffic accident related deaths, but 39 infection cases, that is to tough to go back into lockdown, lets face it there is lots of other illnesses out there, I dont wish to make light of this situation, but you have to weigh up all of the factors, ie health, the economy, shops, mental health, if it was 39,000 new cases, well thats differant.
Alex
The present Australian federal government isn’t too bright . How many times does it have to happen before they take some sort of action .
Happy Day
Goodluck- the cure has been worse than the disease in many places.
Though a little slow on the vaccines, Japan managed COVID very well. Businesses survived, kids thrived.

5,000,000 - 39 = 4,999,961 persons condemned to stay home, for how many our of the 39 who are really sick ?
didou
I can not understand the craziness to lockdown a city of 5 millions, just for a few infected.
Are Aussies not able to respect a few basic hygiene and sanitation rules to protect from a virus without requiring a full lockdown ?
