Aussie will be providing $572.2 million in aid for 2018-19. to Papua New Guinea. Aussie has been providing aid for many a long year despite not getting much in return apart from goodwill.

Before WW2 Asian influence in Oceania was refered as 'The Yellow Peril". WW2 provided justification for both the term and the trepidation. It seems that a similar situation could be developing once again.

PNG was very grateful to Australia during WWII when Australia allied with PNG to fight back the Imperial Japanese Army that was en route to invade Australia. For the most part, relationships have been well kept between Australia and PNG ever since. I would imagine PNG would appreciate, once again, having an Australian base there for security of looming threats in the Pacific.

why don't they ask China to finance the base?... they have already leased Darwin port to the Chinese for 100 years which was one of the dumbest strategic ideas any Australian government has taken....

Do the hustle - what evidence have you that Australia is “more concerned about Indonesia than China”?

Do the Hustle:

"It makes sense that Australia would build a military base in PNG because it is an Australian territory."

Sense is something that’s in extremely short supply.

Australia eyes PNG military base to curb China's Pacific influence

I see nothing in this article that directly states Australia new base is to ‘curb China’s Pacific influence’. It makes sense that Australia would build a military base in PNG because it is an Australian territory. Australia is more concerned about Indonesia than China.

Total waste of money. It won’t do a thing towards stopping China from consolidating control within its current target zone in the South China Sea, which once completed will pave the way towards future claims that will encompass half the Pacific, including this mooted submarine base. If common sense wasn’t in such short supply, the Australian authorities would immediately annul the Darwin Port deal on the grounds that it is immensely dangerous to Australian security to afford its most likely future adversary such a prize asset.
