Somebody has to stand up and beacon of human rights and freedom. For most of its history it was the US, until the trump dictatorship occurred. Now it's working to regain that position and there's Canada and Australia and some others. Good on all of them!

Good on them. Throw China in there while you’re at it.

I really want to like Iran - I really do. I've had several Iranian students and friends; their ancient culture (Persia) is a global wellspring on par with the Greeks. But every time I think, "Okay: they've finally got it," they do something radically stupid again (and I'm talking about civilian massacre and mass arrest here, not arming the Russians, though that really works against their own interests as well).

It'd be most excellent if the (increasingly unpopular) government could reform such that Tehran could imagine hosting the World Cup in a decade or two. Pay attention to the dissidents: they offer a man-on-the-street point of view of a populace seething over their government's intransigence and failures.
