Yup and it is sorely needed:
Racism remains rife towards Chinese-Australians, more than two years into the COVID-19 pandemic

good move.

What's going to be the legal standard for this? If it's anything like what's going on in the UK right now, this is a very dangerous path to take.
In what way? The Albanese government in particular, but others before it as well, have done a sterling job at posing a threat to the country's economic and social cohesion thanks to its disastrous economic and social policies that have driven up living costs to unprecedented levels, made it extremely difficult for younger Australians to buy a home, and flooded the country with immigrants. Would ridiculing them or posting a salty drunken rant on social media constitute a "danger to the government"? If the UK's precedents are a guide, this isn't out of the question. We all know how governments of any persuasion hate criticism.

IF you showed the cross of Jesus or the war shield of the Koori would these be classed as public displays of terror ? The catholic clergy are known child sex offenders and showing the cross to victims certainly would triggered these people fears. The same with the ISIS symbol of the AK-47, similar to the Aboriginal's displaying there war shields. Stupid Labor.

To define hate speech/crime in law is a legal legislative minefield.
At the same time protecting freedom of speech/expression, political religious satirists from prosecution. To protect the right to protest, to question the right for women and children’s safe spaces from men masquerading as women.
This could become a lawyer’s charter free for all at the taxpayers’ expense.
A censor’s weapon to threaten at will.
Who is to set the bar to prosecute?
Offenders could get seven years in jail if the threats pose a danger to the government.
Criminalize your political opponents, the Judiciary could have unchallenged political power without checks and balances.
Intelligence agencies would be given exemptions.

Yes! This will be DOOM and everyone will suffer. We and you must all be very afraid.

Nazi are guilty of genocide, apartheid and ethnic cleaning and their symbol triggers the Ex soviet POWs, Gays, disable and serbs races. Israel are guilty (ICC and ICJ )of genocide, ethnic cleaning and apartheid so star of David would also trigger fear of any Middle east race.

who will protect Australians from government misinformation I wonder....
itsonlyrocknroll
I am sure Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is at heart convinced "hate laws" can be written with the best possible intentions.
Can that be said for future authoritarian autocrat governments, todays "doom" soothsayers are simply pointing out the need to reflect on unsound interpretation of legal principles.

Australia is going completely off the deep end. It's time for the public there to wake up and vote out this kind of government.

The UK has hate crime laws.

What is your answer for hate crimes?
falseflagsteve
wallace
There is no such thing as a hate crime, it’s a term used for emotional response.if you incite violence or threats against others it’s a criminal offence. It’s the current definitions that are worrying, things have been called hate crimes when someone claims offence even if malice is not intended.
Police in all countries should go out and deal with criminals, real ones violent ones. The police spend too much times scouring social media looking for someone who wrote something daft when inebriated instead of catching real villains like my dad did. Clear up rate for burglaries is about 4%, they don’t even send scene of crimes to take fingerprints or anything now.

ffs
if someone targets a person just because they are Jewish that is antisemitic and a hate crime. The attack involves more than just violence. It also involves a hatred of Jewish people. We have seen where that led in WW2.
These attacks, even against young children threaten a whole community of people instilling fear into their lives.
Many attacks go unreported because of the fear it will cause more of them.

People found guilty of a hate crime receive additional punishments.
falseflagsteve
wallace
If you intimidate someone and scare or hurt them you should be punished. If anyone commits a crime against another there should be equal punishment not because it is defined by the current administration that the judiciary has to follow.
its a slippery slope and we already had people arrested for thought crimes and at least one compensated for it at the tax payers expense.
The police should not be judges of what’s vulgar or deemed horrid. Get out there and deal with the burglaries, the stabbing in inner cities etc.
We don’t need ‘hate speech’ in Japan for society to run smoothly and have a low crime rate.
Bobbies on the beat not scouring the internet hoping to find rude people to arrest.

ffs
are you confusing hate speech and hate crime which involves an actual criminal action such as a violent attack or stalking?
The article is about hate crime, not hate speech which is not illegal in many countries.
The article does not mention Japan.
I don't believe the police are "scouring the internet" for hate speech.

No I’m not confusing it, they call it a hate crime also. Check the legislation in U.K. and no doubt Australia will follow.
If I said to someone online in U.K. I hope your kids die or you die of a heart attack or cancer or something equally vile you can go inside for up to 7 years for it. Rather than people just blocking idiots or the old way, call plod and he has a word with them it’s turned into a festival of revenge and retribution usually by those who claim to be most virtuous but are generally the least tolerant of others views.
There’s always going to be vile people about, locking them up for years is a lack of resources and does nothing to stop others.
The abuse I’ve had on this site over the years would be considered a hate crime in the U.K., for example people laughing that I hadn’t seen my son for 2 years and I deserved it, claims that I want old and fat people to die, even claims that I was a gay paedo. I i t losing sleep over BS like that, I live safely in the knowledge that nine of them plonkers would have the courage to say it to me cara a cara.

ffs
There is a separation between "hate speech" which in a country like the US is not illegal. In the UK there are hate crime laws.
Verbal abuse you have experienced would not be hate speech in the UK but it is now in Japan.
I think you need to make a clear distinction between hate speech and hate crime which this article is about.

Is Communications Minister Michelle Rowland guilty of spreading misinformation and disinformation by saying:
"Misinformation and disinformation pose a serious threat to the safety and well being of Australians, as well as to our democracy, society and economy."
Strangerland
To answer your question: No.
JboneInTheZone
The success of western liberal Democracy can in large part be attributed to the rights of citizens to express themselves freely. Surely if this law was in place in the early 2000’s those Australians speaking out again Australia’s involvement in the Iraq war would have been persecuted for “spreading misinformation” were they to post counter to the commonly shared belief that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction.

The road to hell is paved with “good intentions”.

Wallace: Israel as aline itself with terrorist because of the action it as take since 1946. I will remind you that Israel are proven guilty in the ICC of Genocide. To the people who are on the receiving end of this Israel control genocide, to wave the Star of David in their face, No doubt it would trigger fear and memories of the death of love one at the hand of the Israel. So there is your slippy slope. Mate you can have rule for the Nazi and seperate for peoples how are committing the same crimes.
