Australian universities have taken tens of millions of dollars from Beijing to establish "Confucius Institutes" that steer clear of issues damaging to China's ruling Communist Party.

Yep. Not only that, overseas students -esp cashed-up Asians- have always been treated as cash-cows by aussie uni. International students are big business (pay massive fees/accom etc & basically 'buy' their degree)

Australia should build "Special" campuses for Chinese students, say in the desert free from such distractions like freedom, democracy. Obviously these are a sensitive people and would probably feel more comfortable studying behind walls in a desert. Just like home. Rest of Australia could then enjoy free speech without having to worry about upsetting these students.

Australia moved to counter foreign interference at its universities Wednesday, establishing a task force to help protect sensitive research, cyberdefences and free speech.

Good.

I know Cricky is only kidding but I wonder how the Chinese would react to such remote and closed off learning centers.

After all, Beijing seems fine with doing it to Uighur people.

Good news.

Interesting Cricky. But perhaps the students from China are so brainwashed already, they are there to study methodology on how to overthrow the system?

omg omg the Chinese are coming........lol

Most American universities have already severed ties with Confucius Institutes. This is an ongoing aspect of the isolation of China.

Big business only in terms getting admission, as they do not get the concessions which the locals do. The International students are big business everywhere, nothing unique to Australian universities.

China's subterfuge at universities is well-known in Canada, too. Pretty disgusting.

Not true. Germany, France and a few other EU countries do not charge such ridiculous fees for overseas students. In oz they pay up to 400% more than locals. Cash-cows.

Democracy only applies to other China.

Well they do, there is a major difference between the fees of a EU and non EU candidates, not to mention scholarships especially for MS and PhD are only available to the EU students. In the US though it is different, as the only differentiation is between state and non-state students.

The CCP are using “students” embedded among the real students as a Trojan horse primarily to keep them under fear/control and to attack anyone who dares criticise the CCP. This is aimed at silencing critics and undermining democracy in the host countries. Good for Oz.

Not true. All our PhD and MS students get scholarships, some even have double of scholarships as there are additional scholarships which are only for foreigners.
