Two days before Morrison, Biden and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the nuclear submarine deal, Morrison attempted to phone Macron with the news,

Two days before announcement.

Years behind schedule, massively over budget, plans and secrets hacked multiple times. The French need to modernise, de-unionfy it’s work force and become competitive rather then massively subsidise their own market and then act all surprised when orders get cancelled.

A French farce of the highest order.

One would think that Scotty from marketing would stop digging now that he has hit rock bottom.

I get it: The American subs are better and it was the right decision. I agree.

Stop rubbing France's nose in it. I mean it's not like you might not need a favor in the future.

Well, if you expect the U.S. shipyards to be precisely on schedule and within the budget you are for a big surprise, sagas of the Zumwalt destroyer and Gerald Ford aircraft carrier tell a different story.

Anyway, could't Morrison cancel the deal in a more classy, not in so insulting way? Clever people try to increase the number of friends, stupid people increase the number of enemies. France could be a willing member of the Pacific alliance with US, UK and Australia, but now it is difficult.

France and Turnbull backdoored the deal Abbot had made with Japan.

Now the USA and Morrison have backdoored the deal Turnbull made with France.

And France and Turnbull have the gall to whinge?

What goes around comes around chaps.

The Submarines will be built in Adelaide, Australia.

This was never going to be viewed well from the French perspective no matter how much time in advance they were notified. This was a strategic decision that has ended up in what appears to be a formal military alliance where the assumption is each come to the others aid if attacked. Sharing of multiple technologies and joint development of multiple technologies.

France with an upcoming election means the current government can use this to show strength and "outrage" against a long time friendly nation without fear of backlash. This could support Macron in his re-election bid.

As for Scott Morrison, I think this was handled with appropriate security and secrecy and changing anything that happened, even with hindsight, would not have changed much with France but would have ensured a heated domestic discussion on the purchising of Nuclear Submarines that until now had been considered to be inconceivable.

Two kids… Or perhaps it is some kind of game before elections in 2022 (for both of them).

I know. The question is will Australian shipbuilders work faster and with better quality with the unfamiliar technology where even much more experienced American shipbuilders have major delays and cost overruns?

What is certain is that Australian budget will bleed white. Besides from the price of building a squadron of nuclear subs there will be the price of maintaining them. If Australia had difficulties with maintaing its fleet of the Collins diesel subs, what it will do with the nuclear?

This guy has been going around fighting and burning all the bridges! Unfit to lead Australia!!!

It all comes down to the management. Wether it is diesel electric or nuclear powered they were all to be built in Adelaide. The first of class will have cost over run and delays. They usually do. Then they speed up and become more cost effective. The technology for each new class of ship has new components and they all get done with years of training during design stage then years of practice building them for decades.

We were always going to bleed with 12 new subs or 8, in comparison to the 6 we run now. Sadly with the security situation in our region sinking thanks to China we dont have much choice but to spend more for our defense.

"has accused News Corp newspapers,"

Once again Rupert Murdoch is linked to another mess making the 'west' look splintered and inept. Murdoch and his global media must be seen as stars in Moscow and Beijing as they continue using media to further fragment democracies in the 'west'.

Yes, beat all of that suicidal EU back into consciousness on all occasions while you still can. If they ‘succeed’ the whole big rest is done otherwise too.

Macron has credibility? Knock me down with a feather.

exactly France had over 5 yrs to get their shite together and they couldnt even start the 1st sub, Biden and the UK want further deterrents against China and a Nuke Sub is an excellent and far superior option than a diesel electric, Australia would be stupid not to take the offer, yes they could of handled it better but Franace really hasnt got a pot to pee in with all their delays, by the time their subs were finished theyd be old technology

This was not an offer made to Australia. This is a capability Australia ASKED for from the US and UK.

The problem here is Macron, who is extremely arrogant, aggressive and confrontational. That's why he has disputes with everyone, from the UK to Australia to Italy. He is desperate that he is going to lose the election next year and is picking fights with everyone in a stupid attempt to show he is the new Napoleon.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

Don't lie Macron. You have to check what you have sent text messages to our PM before you accused someone. Macron started the first and he lost it. Shut up Macron! You're Submarine group wasted precious 3 years and 3 billion tax payer money for nothing.

Australia’s strategic situation changed in the time from the original purchase was planned due to Chinese aggression. In the new situation diesel electric lacked range, capability and survivability to counter the new threats.

The French were hacked by the Chinese (serious lack of security by the French company) so what the Australians were buying was already known in detail to the Chinese before it was even built and totally compromised and no point in adopting French nuclear technology as it is out of date and compromised. The French contractors were way behind on the contract, in part because they were dragging their feet in hopes of forcing the Australian government to accept less local content and for the subs to be built in France and in part because they seriously underestimated the technical difficulties of converting the design from nuclear to diesel electric, which was also causing the design to become somewhat over weight.

Basically there was little chance of the contract surviving.

The U.S.-led submarine contract supplanted a prior French deal to supply Australia with its own diesel-powered submarines. The U.S. argued that the move, which will arm the Pacific ally with higher-quality nuclear-powered boats, will better enable Australia to contain Chinese encroachment in the region.

The last thing those in charge of the European project want is a France that’s goes off the reservation and elects a wildcard in the upcoming presidential election. In the best WMD Machiavellian tradition, the outrage associated with this Anglo affront to Gallic pride smacks of contrivance, an opportunity too good to waste, to be milked for all it’s worth in order to get Macron over the line.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Macron did accuse Morrison of lying (which is not what leaders of countries that are supposedly allies do), so Morrison produced evidence to show that it was actually Macron who lied about not knowing earlier that the contract was to be canceled. Macron basically avoided attempts by Morrison to let him know the news because he knew what that news was going to be.

President Marcon should, as a head of state, remained composed, raised above the petty politicking.

Macron couldn't stop himself from throwing a public tantrum.

plans and secrets hacked multiple times.

Probably not hacked. The theft appears to have been an inside job by an Indian naval officer involved in the Indian purchase and joint construction of nearly identical submarines. The material appears to have been downloaded to removable media, not hacked from afar.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I am mistaken, it was a recently fired contractor in India, not a naval officer, who downloaded the material from DCNS onto portable media and released it to an un-named Asian shipbuilder who subsequently passed it to a sister shipyard elsewhere in Asia. It was more a case of industrial espionage and not a case of the Chinese hacking the French system. A disc containing the material was later mailed to an unnamed company in Australia via regular mail. "The Australian" actually covered this but I do not have a subscription that allows me to download the original article. Perhaps one of our Australian friends could?
