Virtue signaling at its finest. Both sides know only too well that once these economic migrants have secured NZ residency, they’ll be on the plane to the promised land.

Look NZ is beautiful and has a booming economy twice offered to take these people off Australin hands, it would seem Australia preference is closing the camp and letting the locals hunt and kill those inside soon to be outside. Then not acknowledge or bare responsibility at all. A putrid decision when they have been offered an out. Another notch on Australia's could have done better stick. And a few more unnecessary graves.

What a ridiculous mess. So there are 1,250 refugees that Australia is determined to make the US responsible for. The New Zealand PM offers to take a few of them as if that is some grand gesture of humanitarianism. Oyatoi is correct- this is nothing more than virtue signaling to her political base. It doesn’t do much of anything to solve the problem. Ardern should step up and accept all 1,250 refugees or not offer to take any. It’s as if she is trying to make Turnbull angry.
I also cannot understand why it is so important to ship these people to the US as to risk a rupture in relations. What is the benefit of the US taking this headache off of Turnbull’s hands? America already has at least 12 million illegal aliens.
As for the UN, given that there are not many of them why can’t the refugees be divided and resettled among all of the member states? My guess is that the UN does not care that much about the problem.

I really feel tempted to ask the UK Parliament to consider a proposal to reinstate British Citizenship to all those descendant from Persons shipped to the Australian Penal Colony from the British Isles (including Ireland)... that action in itself would I guess, through a Political spanner in the works for Australia, and may bring about a change in thought about many issues....
