The QLD premier who was most vocal about reducing incoming residents will herself jump on an aeroplane and visit Japan for the olympics.

Typical.

Ashley Shiba - Yet, they are sending their athletes along with many other countries during this very highly contagious outbreak of this new variant here to Japan. Why? What makes Japan the exception of not needing protection and support from other countries? Are Japanese people and others who live here exempt from picking up this new variant? Well, good on Australia, I wish they would think about Japan and the people who live here in the same way.

Bwahah! There are well over 100 countries sending athletes to Tokyo, Why single out Australia exclusively? That could be considered racial hate speech.

Just for a comparison, Tokyo has more new cases every day than this current Australian outbreak has in total. Furthermore, the delta strain of Covid is thriving in Tokyo. Athletes and staff attending the Tokyo games are more concerned about catching the virus there than taking it with them. It should also be noted that all Australian athletes and staff are fully vaccinated.

Also they still tout the "Zero Covid" aim. Never happen.

no they don't - it is clearly stated in the article the strategy has changed

Morrison previewed a "new deal" that would shift the country's strategy from suppressing coronavirus to managing it.

There is something scarily authoritarian about a government denying its own citizens the right to come home.

Australia increasingly appears to be a test case for how much authoritarianism a western country will put up with. A lockdown here. A mask mandate there. Fines everywhere.

Glad I left.

You got to hand it to Australia, though, they are beating COVID. Unfortunately, they are also beating the cr*p out of the economy, small business

Ummm......

Shut off from the world, Australia fosters red-hot growth at home

Far from last year's dire predictions, Australia's unemployment rate has slid to a pre-pandemic level of 5.1%, home building approvals are at a record high and consumer spending is euphoric.

The A$2 trillion ($1.5 trillion) economy is now larger than before the once-in-a-century pandemic hit its shores. Sporting events are again a major spectacle and pubs overflow with patrons. In many states and territories, masks are an uncommon sight.

If anything, the very constraints that were expected to hurt demand, such as closed international borders and limited domestic mobility, have serendipitously channelled new sources of growth.

Instead of traveling to Bali or Bangkok, Australians are holidaying locally. Working from home requirements have prompted many to base themselves in new residences outside major cities, propping up demand in smaller towns. Physical distancing rules have spurred online retail sales while dining out has never been this popular.

More hysterical reaction. These clusters are still tiny and serious symptoms almost none. And I like the language

coronavirus clusters that plunged major cities into lockdown.

Nope, the government did that.

Also they still tout the "Zero Covid" aim. Never happen.

Vaccine "stroll out" - I like that.

Anyway, as they can't seem to identify the leaks in the quarantine system, they instead are reducing the number of people allowed into the system - I can see the logic.

They really have to step of the vaccination program - it's their only way out.

The border rules should be different based on simple measures backed by science.

Penalizing everyone for the people who refuse to be vaccinated isn't right.

Somewhere between that Australia is doing and how other states have relaxed based on vaccinations is needed.

No need to quarantine 14 days someone who is fully vaccinated and tests negative on arrival.

Testing before travel.

Testing on arrival.

Only allow fully vaccinated people to travel.

Quarantine everyone 3 days on arrival and only keep people in quarantine who actually test positive.

The science shows that fully vaccinated people are something like 98% less likely to pass on COVID to anyone else. Of course, this is for the better vaccines with greater effectivity. The less effective vaccines provide protection FROM a serious case of COVID requiring hospitalization - which doesn't help for travel and containment too much. 99.992% of fully vaccinated people don't get COVID: https://arstechnica.com/science/2021/04/99-992-of-fully-vaccinated-people-have-dodged-covid-cdc-data-shows/ If you don't get it, then you can't pass it on.

"sacrifice a family member"? Like on the cross?

Actually with mortality rates what they are tasking a chance of infection leading to death is not a sacrifice at all.....

Morrison saying manage rather than eradicate is irrelevant. He does not run a state. The state premiers will continue to go for eradication because it is what the vast majority of Australians want.

It really does not matter what people from other nations think about Australia if it is not their home.

Say what you like, but as an Australian who has lived months under lockdown, I would rather keep doing that to keep everyone safe than let covid in and to run rampant.

Look to your own countries and how they manage or mismanage covid. Aussies are doing just fine.

Under the current "zero COVID" strategy, just 6,000 people are allowed to enter Australia on overseas commercial flights each week and arrivals must undergo mandatory two weeks hotel quarantine.

He previews a new deal but still engages in these blunt instrument measures.

protect life at all cost (whatever that meant), bla bla bla.

Perhaps you might not be so dismissive and blasé if was your or your families life on the line. You would want to protect them would you not? Or would you be OK to sacrifice a family member for the good of the economy?

Crapchat- indeed, for all the complaining about Japan's COVID response, at least businesses survived and kids thrived. And mortality rate went DOWN last year and probably will again this year.

You got to hand it to Australia, though, they are beating COVID. Unfortunately, they are also beating the cr*p out of the economy, small business, child development, etc. And at this rate, they'll still have lockdowns 10 years from now trying to have zero cases. Hollow victory at best.

Morrison previewed a "new deal" that would shift the country's strategy from suppressing coronavirus to managing it.

Yeah finally coming back to reality. Still remember the "wannabe experts" insisting that Australia was a model to follow, protect life at all cost (whatever that meant), bla bla bla. They were dead wrong to believe that the Australian model was scientifically wise and sustainable. And they are not so vocal anymore it seems.

Nope, the government did that.

Absolutely. And without any scientific justification to do so. Just hygienist ideology.
