I'm certain China will listen.

Yep China treating anyone fairly. Now that would be a great LEAD FORWAED, without the millions of deaths of course.

"I think rather it's a signal that we're now — not only Australia, but really all democracies, all middle powers — are in for a period of sustained tension with China where the safety of our nationals in China simply cannot be assured."

Hit the nail on the head. I think the best thing to do now is for western democracies and their allies to start hitting china with sanctions, which would also include requesting that oil rich countries refrain from providing much needed oil to China. This rogue insane country needs to be stopped.

Gee, it's ALMOST as if these communist dictators aren't nice people!

The entire world knows that such requests are not heeded by China. But, such an appeal must be made to keep the world aware of China's ways. And Canada too must show the world that it does care about its citizens abroad.

That’s a waste of time, China’s concept of what is “fair” and the Australian concept are poles apart.

The purpose can only be to highlight the Chinese government behaviour to the international community, leaving them open to embarrassment and loss of face.
