gee French got half $billion for basically doing nothing for 7yrs , not one weld was done on any of the subs.

The problems between both countries have deep roots and a change of government may not be enough to leave all that behind. But it can be an excuse for a first step and eventually a normalization of the relationship if both countries openly discuss their problems,

It's actually $2.5 billlions in total, he half billions is just the sorry fee, caused mostly by Australia's own political turmoil.
The previous government wouldn't have paid that much, but needless to say the ego of a previous Australian PM having been kicked out by his own party played a big role in punishing his own countrymen and taking the side of the french just to get back at those who kicked him out.
