I used to deal with Australians who did not know how to spell "hygene" in USA. This is nothing but a stereo type negative perception ( a silent discrimination) against immigrants who share different values and culture. She is not fit to be called as a policy maker of Australia and starts her career at deodorant industry.

Obviously never been in a taxi in Melbourne or Sydney if you believe that. Anyone who has will know exactly what l mean.

Actually you would be surprised she is actually being very accurate and honest, unfortunately she will have to apologise as we cannot offend our minority people in Australia and must continue to bow to their every wish.

Several years ago, a supervisor requested that an certain national's travel documets be prepared. His main reason: the foreigner smells, even from the elevator hall, which has a sliding door and about 20 meters away from the foreigner's seat, the undeniable scent can be smelled.

Earlier that week, the supervisor politely asked the foreigner to go home and take a bath. The forgeiner obliged. But when he returned, he still smelled the same, and wearing the same clothes he wore earlier, but he said he took a bath.

She's more than qualified to teach 'awareness' to people heading into the nation, but not to push said values into law.

Hang on, I agree with her. Regardless of race or nationality, why should anyone have to endure the foul stench of stale and repulsive poor personal hygiene? I say well done for having the 'balls' to say something about it. I would too.

If they had better jobs instead of the low paid, dirty, smelly and dangerous, they would smell better. Don't ask a man to shovel shit and then come up smelling like roses.

Ah so its too much to expect taxi drivers, service station attendants and convenience store people to use a bit of deodorant. I have worked with some very well paid people who because of their ethnic background have very bad B.O issues and there is no excuse for it other than poor hygiene pure and simple.

Again, tell them it's a cultural faux pas, but don't force them to do anything they don't want to.

Either you are being ironic - or you have made a very embarrassing spelling error.

Migrants or anyone on a long term visa such as students and working holiday holders need the vital information about consumer rights, other general legal/administrative and normal practices in Australia but they get nothing not enough a link to the websites. My wife got ripped off because she paid a bond to a subletter (its not legal in Australia). I am sure its the same atrocious service that every government gives to long termers- there is that long plane trip and they can't be bothered providing information for airlines to distribute/provide access to.

Yes, the comments sound ridiculous, unless you have lived through such an experiment. In my case, it was a graduate student from Turkey who lived in the dorm room next to mine. His roommate, a friend of mine, tried several subtle methods to get him to use deodorant and shower every day. It was very funny, but Jesus, did he stink. Somewhere along the line, he did learn Western hygiene, because about two years later I let him stay at my place when he was looking for new housing. He didn't smell anymore, but he had picked up snoring. Really loud.
