Reality is they have been banned since 1985 and she isn't going to change the policy. Fair enough.

In war time such a restriction will be removed if enemy submarines are detected anywhere near NZ or it's neighbors. It is strictly a peace time restriction.

11 ( +13 / -2 )

Makes sense considering other country's subs aren't allowed either. I get the impression though that it was assumed Australia would be an exception because of the hunkydory dinkum relationship these countries have with each other.

10 ( +12 / -2 )

The actual supply of the subs is decades away. Plenty of time for US changes in Presidents and politics.

I'll believe it when it happens......PM Morrison {Aust } has a lousy track record of delivering on anything.....

It's saddening how ignorant many of you are and how quick you are to state your opinions as facts. In 1984, New Zealand passed legislation that made the entire country a nuclear-free zone. No American warships have come to NZ since then because they won't confirm or deny if they have nuclear capabilities. This is a long standing rule.

Please read a little about the history of NZ. Start with the key words Rainbow Warrior. Search for this quote, "I can smell the uranium on your breath". A single search o nuclear NZ would have given you all of this.

A lot of you seem to want to fight. "Ah stupid leftists, liberals, whatever". You genuinely know nothing about what you're speaking and it's embarrassing.

Open your eyes and your ears before your mouths.

(although recent improvements have made deasil electric subs very good) with virtually unlimited range.

any diesel sub has to surface to get air recharge batteries, nuclear subs can stay under for months normally 3 months at a time , the only limiting factor for a nuclear sub is when they run out of food and toilet paper

Is this to deflect from the ongoing lockdown debacle in their biggest city?

Capable leaders can tackle more than one issue at the same time.

There is a difference between nuclear-powered and carrying nuclear weapons.

Australia want nuclear-powered subs because the Pacific is a very big pond. The distances are too large for traditionally-powered subs. In WWII, Japan managed to attack Australia. That created a feeling of vulnerability that has remained to this day.

Nuclear this or that?

The Government of China has a comprehensive nuclear short range capability without any treaty stipulations.

China unveils improved short-range ballistic missile.....

https://www.janes.com/defence-news/news-detail/china-unveils-improved-short-range-ballistic-missile

Japan has to lead here, but the people of Japan do not trust there government.

I can see it in the elder members of my family. The cultural hardcore.

They will vote, but not trust the present government to mow the lawn.

There has to be comprehensive reform and change.

There has to be a regional policy, a treaty if necessary ....

7th Fleet Destroyer conducts Freedom of Navigation Operation in South China Sea.......

It must be backed up with unequivocal concordance/coherence from all parties/signatories.

No oohing and aahing.....

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern Government could be the geo political stick wedded to an ideology that the Government of China will see as a stepping stone to divide, and ultimately, view as a means to undermine future relationships with neighbors.

Well. I hope no one invades NZ in the future.

Japantime

I don’t think they would need to go to New Zealand. Very quiet corner of the world, except for people interested in Rugby.

I think the word you are looking for is idyllic.

Whether NZ allows nuclear powered vessels within its waters is quite irrelevant, it will be effectively meaningless in the context of the vast Pacific. Her announcement is got local consumption. The NZ population as a whole obviously are supportive of this policy or it would have been dumped by a previous administration.

As to their allies I have no doubt they do and will continue to respect it (it basically costs them nothing and gains them more), as to “other” actors I doubt if they take any notice if they want to send nuclear subs in to NZ waters, they are as others have said hard to detect and the NZ navy doesn’t have the capacity to monitor their waters to such a degree as to preclude them. Such ships as they have are busy with a lot of other duties.

Arguably the finest exponent of thrashing the right at the ballot box and sending right wingers across the planet into hysterics.

I’ve never known so much attention paid to a leader of that small but fine country.

Arden should recognize that NZ security very much relies upon Australian security.

With a pat on the head from Xi no tarrifs imposed will she.

It was a fight with gorilla tactics.

Is that pounding on their chests and screeching?

clueless.

1 ( +18 / -17 )

Thanks for that team spirit NZ. Your ships can be the only ones to "register" with China if they want to pass through the International Waters known as the South China Sea.

New Zealand: Asserts its sovereignty through its democratically elected officials.

Some weird American commenters: “New Zealand is now China.”

1 ( +2 / -1 )

If Australia is serious about procuring nuclear submarines, it would do well to start now by leasing an old one immediately from the United States to gain operational experience.

0 ( +7 / -7 )

You cannot and must not resort to appeasement, it is the lowest common denominator.

The cowering coward hoping to negotiate and expect the Xi Jinping crocodile eat you last?

(Churchill),

Your stand firm

Arden should recognize that NZ security very much relies upon Australian security.

Australia should recognize that the cozy relationship between them and New Zealand very much relies upon them respecting New Zealand’s sovereignty.

I’ve never known so much attention paid to a leader of that small but fine country...

Now that's a good point.. now why do think she get's so much attention...

A war that doesn't fight all-out will always have moral considerations. Limited wars are complex, especially when the other side fights on the weekends and runs a grocery store on weekdays, in a non-govt organization. Afghanistan wasn't a fight with the official govt. It was a fight with gorilla tactics. Asymmetric war is hard for the bigger army to fight.

Indeed guerilla warfare. The Taliban dress like the locals in Afghanistan while the U.S. soldiers are easily marked by uniforms and fatigues. Why wear the beige cryptic coloration camouflage and not robes, head scarves and sandals?

And she is considered weak when standing up-to to China, these are some of the reasons she is so successful..

Really? Tell me mrtinjp, what would you say to China? Think carefully before you answer and consider that China is NZ's biggest trading partner.

China is NZ's biggest trading partner..

That's the case with many countries, including neighbor Australia, and they are standing up-to China

Australia is bigger and more diverse and can weather it better. Still not easy for them either. Farmers are having to find new markets.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern Government must link arms, hands with there family, all, grit your teeth, but these are unprecedented times.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Now that's a good point.. now why do think she get's so much attention...

Because she's a leftist politician that has been extremely successful. They hate the fact that the people love her policies, and that she won by a landslide, in the middle of the pandemic, even though she enacted policies they have been claiming are the worst possible thing that could happen to humanity.

They hate her because her very existence disproves the ridiculous far-right "values" the espouse. She proves them wrong on gay marriage. She proves them wrong on anti-islamic hate. She proves them wrong on lockdowns. She proves them wrong by being a woman in charge. She proves them wrong by being supremely popular even with all these things.

Her existence literally proves their words to be entirely devoid of usefulness to humanity.

So they try to discredit her any chance they can. They're finding that very hard to do when she's not only been so successful, but also so popular.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

The logic of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern Government to ignore the threat staring them in the face.

However Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern Government wants to politically appease the crocodile.

1985? The reality is 2021!

The Government of China will use Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern Government to prize apart five eyes.

The consequences could be felt within the trading routes spanning the South China Sea.

-2 ( +8 / -10 )

Doesn't she fully understand underwater situations and submarine capability? Territorial waters are breached by nuke subs belonging to foreign countries. NZ's is not exception. How could NZ Navy possible locate them?

I wish I could have upvoted that post more than once.

Why is everybody complaining? Well done New Zealand. Japan doesn't allow ships bearing nuclear weapons either, but being Japan, they just don't ask and turn a blind eye to all America's blatant disregard of the rule.

-2 ( +9 / -11 )

Time to replace New Zealand with Japan in the Five Eyes pact. Having New Zealand in it is a black eye.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

New Zealand has a joke of a military. Just tell them accept the ships or you will not cooperate with their military. It is not a big loss.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

China is NZ's biggest trading partner..

That's the case with many countries, including neighbor Australia, and they are standing up-to China, sooner or later NZ will fall into that Chinese debt trap..

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Have to find them to ban them. The whole point of nuclear subs is that they are quiet (although recent improvements have made deasil electric subs very good) with virtually unlimited range.

-3 ( +8 / -11 )

Because she's a leftist politician that has been extremely successful...

And how..example.. it's not the anti-islamic hate, it's something else..

https://twitter.com/tarekfatah/status/1109142257247154176?lang=en

And she is considered weak when standing up-to to China, these are some of the reasons she is so successful..

That might be valid under Ardern, but surely not so much longer after Ardern. lol

-7 ( +12 / -19 )

It would be a shame if a nearby pacific island suddenly had an Islamist terrorist group that mysteriously acquired US grade nuclear weapons.
