Australia already has immigration quotas that have been in place for many years to allow a sustainable number of immigrants in. Australia has one of the most generous dole programs in the world, and the general concern is that people are coming to Australia to bludge around. This is the reason why Australia generally gives first priority to Chinese and Indian immigrants; they work their arses off.

PM Tony Abbott is the guy he will do as what he said. Peoples who preparing to go to Christmas Island must think seriously about going to Australia before hand over money to human traffickers. Labor will not be come back to the office for at least 9 years. You will end up in Papua New Guinea.

Coalition Government can not be tested like Labor Government. Coalition Government does not care about Refugee Advocates' media campaign and UN criticizing. Coalition Government is always implemented its policy. Don't waste your money.

Your manufacturing sector is in ruins- wrong. it was always shoddy due to the power of the unions and the generally poor work ethic and high wages that are prevalent in Australia.

I think it's an exaggeration to attribute that much influence to Australian manufacturing (and other sector) trade unions. That wages are set to the level they are is attributable to the 'living wage' model that developed countries aspired to when the idea of standardized wages came about. This is true in many developed countries. It may be true that the various state constitutions (notably Jack Lang's influence on the NSW state constitution) are possibly more biased in favour of workers than they are of business, but surely that's not a bad thing?

Ever driven a Kingswood HK ? Very well made cars. An argument could be made that most of the early kingswood models were of a similarly high standard and that quality didn't really drop off until the camira in the 80s.

Unprofitable? I would suggest to you that (as with the automotive industry in Japan) a strong domestic demand will in time ensure lower costs, better product and a profitable market. I don't know about economics 101 or anything, but that seems pretty fundamental to me.

Manufacturing has no place in a country like Australia due to geographic and cultural reasons(laziness, inefficiency- she'll be right mate) and history has proven that. Toyota cited a low level of domestic demand as one of the reasons they are pulling out of the Australian market - rubbish. The automobile industry has been unprofitable for decades due to the aforementioned reasons. Toyota is doing the same as any other company that wants to cut costs. Shift manufacturing to countries where there are lower wages and greater tax breaks. Economics 101 so how about letting some people in to increase the population and create a viable locally driven economy ? More like how about letting some freeloading dregs move in and create a more dysfunctional society

White Australia policy is and has been buried for a very long time .We are a very diversified nation un like Japan.. .Walk down any street and you will find peoples of all races and colours, that is Australia , Started with convicts then Immigrants in a country that was already inhabited by indigenous people . What colour Well dark brown not allowed to say black-fuller in the first incidence it was mass slaughter of the black fellers, Which many Australians have forgotten including our immigrants. We in Australia are all Australians No matter the colour or race mix.

Thanks to John Howard for encouraging such a degree of xenophobia in Australians that immigration control became an election issue. Two administrations later and it still is.

Australia - you have enough room and refugees need help so stop it with the unnecessarily harsh border control. Instead of pandering to the worst impulses of voters, why not try and inform the public of the benefits of allowing asylum seekers in - not the least of which is that its an indicator of a civilized society.

Australia gave immigration to anyone a chance for the first 200 years of its' post British invasion history. That has provided a solid foundation of workers that helped build up the economy throughout the 20th century. It has also caused a lot of problems. Multiculturalism is no paradise. There are pockets of society that are comprised of migrant workers, the first generation of which generally worked hard to establish their roots in a new country. Unfortunately the following generations feel that they are owed something or that they can just sponge off welfare. Their ethnic roots do not match and they are alienated and fall into the gang mentality which exists in the fractured societies that their parents or grandparents brought them from. Now immigration is a free-for all and while a lot of people are genuinely trying to escape horribly violent countries a lot of the people are just taking advantage of the system so they can get welfare and live an easy life. Many countries in Europe are facing the same problem and all of them are right to try to stem it. Just because there is more space in Australia is no reason to flood it with ungrateful migrants who bring their hang-ups and unwanted religious dogma. On the other hand the government should welcome anyone with skills who are willing to accept the secular society and work hard.

A lot of you are missing the point here, The point is that these refugees were not being taken care of properly. PNG is not Australia where standards are much higher.

Refugees to PNG are being given punishment at best and a death sentence at the worst.........

Labor set up the PNG camp. Labor were also responsible for the influx of economic refugees in the first place. They were the worst govt in the country's history. Tony Abbott has stopped this now so that means Tony Abbot has done a very good job. Pretty simple logic despite the cries from the bleeding hearts.

If you send refugees to one of the most VIOLENT countries on the earth then wtf do you expect?

Abbott knows full well what he is doing and should be held accountable for these deaths..........!
