To anyone defending this guy... What possible good could an explosive vest be used for? There is absolutely nothing tragic about this end.

I wonder what was this guy thinking wearing a explosive vest? This could have been a real tragedy had he used it to kill people in large crowds. I guess he going to the land down under now!

Explosive vest?....seems like a greater potential tragedy was avoided in this case.

This is how assassinations are done in some parts of the world, take as many as you can with you. The Iraq War of 2003-2011 had several such incidents. So has the Somalia anarchy chaos.

In 1993, ex-Pres. George Bush was visiting Kuwait to obtain a medal from the emir for doing what the Emirate was too chicken to do in 1991. A suicide driver trying to kill Bush went on such a mission, Saddam Hussein sent him on it. The car blew up prematurely and only the driver was killed. Had his mission succeeded, only not Bush but the Kuwaiti Emir and 100 others would've been snuffed.

Then-Pres. Clinton lobbed a rocket attack on the Iraqi secret police HQ, trashing it as an 'answer'/revenge act.

According to other news sources, he was at the home of his ex-partner immediately prior to the explosion, so it seems likely he was wearing the vest while he was there.

Having seen the footage, it doesn’t look like this was a bomb meant for a mass casualty attack: when the bomb goes off, there’s a puff of fire that blows out the windows, but the car remains completely intact. It’s a “blink and you’ll miss it” kind of explosion. From the look of it, I don’t think it would have killed anyone other than him even if they’d been on the sidewalk as he passed by. This wasn’t the kind of explosive you’d see from someone who was out to kill a bunch of people. It seems like this guy was really only out to take his own life, but to do it dramatically, for reasons were may learn later.

On the evidence of what little was provided in the article it is as likely he was going somewhere he could kill himself without injuring others when it went off accidentally, as all the other creative scenarios posted above.

The reality is we just do not know

The Aussie media mentions he was a former soldier, and gives links to mental health services. The general assumption seems to be that this was a genuine tragedy, not a terrorist attack gone wrong.

No need to publish the name. I have quite an imagination how those new ‘Australian’ names sound or are written. lol

This guy has quite the fashion sense. I wonder where he was going with such an extravagant vest.

Ah yes, just another Australian man driving around with an explosive vest.... nothing to see here. No word about his ideology, his beliefs and his possible plans. Could be anything, right? Got to love our media.

You’d prefer the media published a lot of unconfirmed information or just imagined scenarios like posters above did?

Maybe best to wait a bit. You could read more than the headline in the meantime.

When you find something about his ideology, beliefs and possible plans you could let us know.

I don't think he was carrying this vest to catch fish with it. I believe he got what he deserved before hurting innocent people.

There's likely to be more to this than meets the eye.

Potential scenario: Man joins army, serve his country. Probably sent to Afghanistan, gets injured and PTSD, gets hung out to dry by the government he served, mental illness and perhaps alcohol/substance abuse ensue to dull the pain, causing family relationship to spin out of control and end up like this.

Tragedy for all concerned.

Good old speed bumps! I mean, hey, if your "explosive vest" can't make it over a speed bump...lol.

Apparently it is/was a 'domestic' squabble, ex partner, custody of kids, etc.

Imagine being so unlucky that you accidentally get yourself killed while on your way to blow yourself up.

Hardly a tragedy. Silly little man.
