KnowBetter, One may not agree with what the Aussies are doing with people trying to enter their country illegally but have you noticed that they don't seem to have the same problems or level of incidents per capita with terrorism and ethnic troubles within their borders. Sometimes doing what is right to protect your citizens may not be very good for those trying to break into it.

KnowBetter. We Aussies have to thank to former elected Prime Minister Tony Abbott. He has saved thousands of men, women and children' lives by introducing strong border protection and turning unseaworhty boats back to Indonesia. There’s no single life has lost since former elected PM Tony Abbott introduced Operation Sovereign Borders protection in September, 2013. Also most of planned terrorism attacks were prevented by introducing strong domestic Terrorism law and Intelligence community has more power to track down terrorist activity. So Australian is a bit safer than other westernized Countries.

What international amnesty wants was flooding Australia with economic Asylum seekers from Middle East, Afghanistan and Bangladeshi. Those asylum seekers on Nauru and Manu Island have given settlement in PNG and Cambodia but they only wanted to come and live in Australia and country like United State. Some of Iranian refugees settled in Cambodia were gone back to Iran after one year. They are not genuine refugees but they were recognized as genuine refugee by UNHCR. If Nauru, PNG and Cambodia are good enough to live for peoples of Nauru, Papua New Guinea and Cambodia and then those countries are good enough for everyone to live there. There’s no term and condition for asylum seekers only to be settled in Australia, UK and United State in UN Refugee Convention. The asylum seekers, International Amnesty, Human Right organization and UN think even country like France, Italy, Spain and other European countries are not good enough for refugees. So asylum seekers are trying sneak into UK by stowaway on trucks.

The UNHCR and International Amnesty are breaking the UN Refugee Convention because they allowed asylum seekers to pass many safe nations before they sailed to Australia by unseaworthy boats.

The UNHCR, Human Right watch and International Amnesty must share responsible for death of over 1,500 children, women and men at sea under Labor Government (2007 - 2013. Also there may have numbers of unknown sank asylum seekers boats sank at the sea.

How many peoples have been lost or died in Mediterranean Sea under UNHCR, International Amnesty, International Human Right organization and EU Human Right policy in 2016 so far? I believe not less than 5,000 children and women, pregnant women and men have been lost or died in 2016. Those organizations are responsible for lost of lives of children, women and men. They indirect and directly encourage them to go to Europe and other rich nations.

The Geneva conventions (other treaties are sometimes cited, or the more vague international law) state that those fleeing must seek asylum in the 'first safe country' they come to, which would not normally be the Australia, United State and UK. Now modern asylum seekers come with menu. The money spending on queue-jumper asylum seekers should be using for genuine refugees in camps in Africa and somewhere else. Australia has spent not less than $ 100,000 for processing of each asylum seeker. Also the survey show 90% of former Muslim refugees didn’t have job after 5 years. Those refugees and asylum seekers on Manu Island and Nauru do not want to go to other third country and they only wanted to come and live in Australia. International Amnesty doesn’t think refugees on those two Islands should be settled in other countries except Australia.

The World needs more countries to accept Genuine Refugees. Many Refugees are legitimate but those that are not should be sent back to their last country they traveled from or flown directly to the nearest point they originated from. Australia's problem is housing and jobs at the expense of all those already in Australia and Australia's ability to support a bigger population Sofar most recent travelers have been housed before those Australian citizens that have been on waiting lists for public housing for 10 or more years. All of Australia's pensions have been technically behind world standards for the last two Liberal National governments they simply ignore the Average Australian and pander to the mining sectors giving massive tax breaks and subsidies to the mining sector for a negative return So what they do is reduce services like hospitals and education . Trade training pensions and lower conditions of living for the elderly. to find funds for war inturn causing the flood of refugees world wide.

Sure, if you think torture is appropriate for someone who's trying to find a safe place to live because their home has become unsafe.

It's not torture, and these people passed many countries that would offer asylum before they approached Australia. Obviously these people haven't looked at all the options of finding a 'safe place to live'.

@knowbetter, hard to compare oz with Europe. One is fairly isolated, handles a few thousands potential illegal immigrants each year while the other region gets that in a week or sometimes in a day.

Am all for stopping the boats and even processing the migrants offshore but what i saw in the doco that aired last night was appalling. We all know Nauru or png are facing their own problems and clearly do not right now provide adequate conditions (safety, shelter etc).

Plus the young girls interviewed had been in detention for over 1000 days and had no idea when they will be processed. Not a good look.

they are breaking the law to enter the country. i don't see what's the problem.

Seems legit.

The Australian model for dealing with the refugee crisis. Not pretty.
