Security is very tight in the cordoned area - you have to be there by early afternoon; otherwise, it's already full (a million people easy) and the authorities won't let any more in. And once you're in, you have to stay because if you leave, you can't go back in. It's been a lot better since Mayor Guiliani cleaned up Times Square in the 90s.

I would say it was "lowered" not dropped. I wonder how well the pickpockets did.

I saw it dropped once as a kid in person. Broken glass, muggers and all I saw was this ball drop quickly. It is all so BORING!
