Not a very positive grass-roots economic outlook. While China says its strict zero-Covid policy means that it has seen far fewer coronavirus deaths than much of the rest of the world - although it is thought the true figure could be far higher - there have been repeated stories of delayed emergency treatment for seriously ill people in locked-down areas or quarantine facilities.

It’s either pure, unadulterated incompetence and stupidity, or something much more sinister. Personally reckon it’s the former. Blind obedience gets tested to the limits in a massive flex of power. Are they not driving a huge stake into their economy? How do factories and other businesses continue to run if everyone is locked up in their homes? Well financially for other countries like Indonesia, Vietnam and so on this a great because so many companies are shifting their business out of China due to these lockdowns.

Control over the population is the number one priority, and vaccines and effective treatments are not as useful for that purpose as lockdowns and forced testing, so the CCP is choosing to sacrifice some of the economy just to be sure the population has no chance to fight back.

You can’t compare it to other places, because they have quite another and higher population density. If they wouldn’t act early the consequences would quickly be to shut everything down for a 1.3 bln people if the viruses again spread everywhere. And btw still the numbers are very low. Others would be happy to have only such a few thousand new cases.

China is closed down, other countries aren't.

Why all that? China wants to control the population.

No-one can seriously support a zero approach.

The most sinister aspect is that they know full-well what they put in this virus, and therefore know the full consequences coming down the track, hence their totalitarian repressive approach in dealing with it.

The reality is, only China has shown positive growth throughout the crisis. So, saving millions if lives, and not plummeting the economy into a recession like Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Europe, CHina has come out in top.

As you yourself have recognized, the zero covid policy is not only unnecessary but causes more damage than what it can prevent, countries like Sweden demonstrate control of the pandemic can be done without causing more deaths and public health problems with lockdowns that you have disqualified.

Well, the CCP conference is overs, Xi has got his 3rd term, so as expected, the numbers are trickling out, and the COVID rules being enforced. Xi doesn't really care, this is probably more about controlling the Chinese - forcing them into complete submission to the CCP.

What we see is the police curbing the people because they are getting tired and fighting back even if it means dying because that is what they are doing now.

China is able to pursue the least damaging response to Covid outbreaks because it can afford to.

Part of it is because of its size, part of it is because it's economic measuring stick isn't one quarter long, part of it is because it doesn't have an opposition party to blame the government for the short term costs, and part of it is because it isn't paying off loans (let alone paying off yesterday's loans by taking out bigger loans today)
