It hasn't changed, Biden just stated openly what his predecessors beat around the bush about!
I for one am glad he did openly state that the US would defend Taiwan, with troops, if necessary! Cut the BS, stand up to China, about Taiwan, and see what China does!
commanteer
Biden vacillates between weakness and strength, a very dangerous practice. Enemies will be emboldened to attack and in the end, Biden will likely send the military in on impulse to prove he's not weak. Better to project consistent strength to discourage China from attacking at all.
Blacklabel
“The White House” already walked it back.
again.
Ego Sum Lux Mundi
The End of Strategic Ambiguity! Joe Biden makes it clear that the US will fight China over Taiwan:
Checkmate, Xi!
rainyday
Get your facts straight, the US is fighting against Russia, not for it.
Peter14
That is because the statement you just made is completely false.
US troops are not fighting in Ukraine, nor is it a Neo-Nazi country let alone an open one.
And finally Biden has threatened nobody with nuclear war.
Scaremongering people with your lies is hardly honorable.
If China invades independently ruled Taiwan, it will face a war with the US and others, and it will mean all trade with those nations ceases immediately. Blockades will be placed on shipping going to or from China.
China will not win. It has lasted over 5000 years and it will survive but it will no longer rule itself, unless the US gives the mainland to Taiwan to rule a "one China". I imagine most mainland Chinese would welcome the new freedoms that would bring.

well, if China and the U.S. war over, and in, Taiwan, whatever the outcome, doubt there would be much of Taiwan left, so any 'victory' would be pyrrhic. but I'm sure Lockheed-Martin, Boeing, BAE, Raytheon et al will be pleased.

Joe is committing US forces now? That's pretty crazy without a security agreement.

So much for the "weak on China" troupe.
She the "reckless warmonger" troupe.

So going from fighting for a non-NATO corrupt openly neo-Nazi country, to threatening nuclear war with another countries over its internal affairs…can’t understand his logic.
he does know that in his country 20 US veterans commit suicide every single day, 20 a day die from drug overdoses, New Orleans has overtaken St Louis as the murder capital, record inflation, record fuel prices, dangerous polarization of of its citizens, millions of homeless illegal immigrants, poverty, infrastructure depletion, climate change, bejesus, the list goes on. He doesn’t even notice his 28% approval rating at home. I think he probably confuses it with his 95% approval rating in Ukraine.
Fighto!
Excellent to see Biden - and the US - are committed to protecting free, democratic Taiwan. If unelected Communist China throw yet another tantrum, we can all just stand back, point and laugh.
Communist China is the one who is constantly threatening war. It is therefore wise for free Taiwan, the US and allies to be prepared for peace, but ready for war.
tooheysnew
these are the anti west brigade.
they would rather cheer on murdering communist / fascist regimes than support freedom loving democratic countries

and yet biden was vague as all hell in the DW just recently when asked how US will respond to Ru nukes or WMD: "You think i'd tell you how we would respond??!" or words to that effect
serendipitous1
Biden's comment is a gazillion times milder than Trump's, 'fire and fury like the world has never seen' comment about NK. Short memories these Republicans have!

10 downvotes for a factual statement that the White House immediately walked back Biden’s statement.
we will of course not be sending our military members to die for Taiwan.
more “feelings over facts” I guess.
deanzaZZR
Without a security treaty with Senate approval they are simply words. Formal treaties clearly specify the responsibilities of both parties. You would think the former Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee would understand that.
Joe is simply chasing mid-term votes. A more mature foreign policy would seek to increase the distance between Xi and Putin and not push them closer together.

You have to see it from both sides, not only Taiwan, but those large cities along the Chinese coastline will be also destroyed, like Shantou, Xiamen, Quanzhou, Fuzhou.. only these few Chinese cities have a higher population than all Taiwan and not to talk about their high industrial output.

This would be the 4th time since he became President that President Biden publicly said the US would defend Taiwan if China launched a military attack.
The WH hasn't walked back on the statement as some misleadingly suggest and if anyone still doesn't get the message they should up their reading skills!!!
Blacklabel
but there is. the White House said there is no change in the policy.
What Biden said is.... a change in the policy.
for the 4th time that the White House had to correct him.

"White House walks back Biden Taiwan defense claim for third time in 9 months"
today was the 4th time.

Sure he’s going to say that, do you think HE’s going to go ?
Always good to advise your ADVISORY you intend NOT to, by the way.
WA4TKG
Between him and Pelosi, they’re going to get us into another conflict in record time.

I find it hilarious that you criticize me and not the disingenuous people downvoting facts and spreading blatant misinformation.

Commanteer, American has no legal obligation to defend you or no foreign citizens, why should American policy matter to you,the American public is not part of a suicide pact, foreigner worry about what America will do more than American, the average American could care less
Yrral
The US military is For Us By US,we do want them in harm way,we the people through our Congress have the ultimate say,the President with authorization of Congress cannot defend Taiwan
bass4funk
I agree and we shall see, so far Biden's record when it comes to geopolitics has been nothing but abysmal, if he really has a defined and outlined goal for putting thousands of American lives on the line then it had better be sound and with a clear objective, all the way and not like the disasters of Afghanistan and Ukraine.
Yrral
American is not too be used by foreigner, too overcome their fear of China ,you should seek therapy for Chinese anxiety, Chinese are part of our American family,we protect them against all enemies foreign and domestic
deanzaZZR
@ulysses The difference is "support' vs suggesting the use of "US forces". That is a big difference. The US is now supporting Ukraine. The US does not have boots on the ground.
OssanAmerica
The US policy on Taiwan is that;
1) The US recogonizes the one-China policy, ie; Beijing represents China.
2) The US has never recognized China's sovereignty over Taiwan. Hence the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979 and the Taiwan Policy Act happening now. Under which the US supports Taiwan's right to defend itself from China.
So yes, the US Policy has not changed. And the US will defend Taiwan if China invades. There is no contradiction or "walking back" here.
ulysses
No it wasn’t, read the article!
Comedy gold, what a total lack of understanding of facts!
Blacklabel
is that what Biden said? Taiwan can just defend itself from China? I heard something quite different come out of his mouth.
deanzaZZR
@Ossan If you are learned in this matter as you seem to suggest, you must acknowledge that the Taiwan Relations Act only speaks about the US providing defensive military arms to Taiwan. It does not say anything about US military personal becoming involved in a conflict, hence, this is potentially a significant change.
US forces were stationed in Taiwan up and until the US and China established diplomatic relations.
Ass
Biden is weakness personified
bass4funk
Given his history in geopolitical affairs, it's less than funny, in fact, it's frightening
I think that is a serious worrisome understatement
ulysses
No surprise that Donald’s boys are scared!
Their lack of understanding of even the most basic of facts is surpassed only by donald!
FizzBit
Does anyone really think Biden is “saying” anything of his own initiative?
Anyway, Biden’s handlers will not consider their rule a success until after they start WW III.
OssanAmerica
We all know what the Taiwan Relations Act says. And we all know that the US has and will continue to provide arms to Taiwan. And The POTUS has stated that the US will defend Taiwan. Really, nothing to discuss.
"A U.S. special-operations unit and a contingent of Marines have been secretly operating in Taiwan to train military forces there, U.S. officials said, part of efforts to shore up the island’s defenses as concern regarding potential Chinese aggression mounts."
