homemade, military-style semi-automatic rifles and handguns.

Curious whether gun extremists will claim it's their right to own these because their 'militias' need them to overthrow the state.

That so many Americans live in a constant state of fear so serious they believe weapons of all sorts are required wherever they are, be it home, church, a concert, movie theater, wherever, says US society is moribund.

The reality that whenever anyone even mentions discussing ways to deal with the guns problems the gun extremists threaten 'second civil war' says the US is indeed doomed.

He's also expected to nominate David Chipman, a former federal agent and adviser at the gun control group Giffords, to be director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Excellent choice. This is exactly the sort of professional, experienced, results-driven expert we've come to expect from the Biden administration.

Joe Biden has been doing what he promised: working for the American People, for us, without fear or favor. One foot in front of the other, he is crossing the great divide. He may not close it, but he is bringing hope wherever he goes.

No one wants to overthrow the government, but the millions of law-abiding gun owners are not going to allow the Federal government dictate to them what firearms they can or cannot own, that would be the fastest way to create extremism.

Yes and all the reason why firearm sales are up, they’re up for the simple fact that they don’t believe that the Federal and even local governments can protect them and with the left limiting powers of the police and the police worrying about how to properly execute the law and with record numbers of police quitting and retiring, being defunded, gives more than fear and anxiety to millions of people and if they can’t depend on their police to protect them, they will do it themselves.

The reality that whenever anyone even mentions discussing ways to deal with the guns problems the gun extremists threaten 'second civil war' says the US is indeed doomed

The left doesn’t want to discuss gun rights with gun owners, we see it here on JT, the gun haters and less informed are always shrieking get rid of guns, ban them, they don’t need guns, that’s not a discussion, those are emotional and childish demands and you can never have a discussion once you put emotion into the argument. A growing number of Americans don’t trust or have faith in their current government and watch how their rights are eroding with each passing day and any executive order will only exacerbate those distrustful fears.

No one wants to overthrow the government

Actually, Trump supporters tried to do just that in January. Weird that you don't remember that.

No one wants to overthrow the government

Extremists in the gun communities and throughout the alt right have long threatened 'the next civil war' when changes to gun laws are even mentioned. Own it.

I would LOVE for someone to define what exactly is a "military style assault rifle" first. After that , present the data that these weapons are used in a large number of crimes and murders.

As for trying to overthrow the government, that didn't happen. Curious how all these extremists showed up armed with nothing more dangerous than a flag pole. No firearms were found at all. The only firearm related death was the unarmed protestor who was shot by a police officer.

Biden took an oath to defend the US following the US Constitution from all enemies, foreign and domestic.

There are 10 rights spelled out in the 1st ten amendments. These were mandated to be included by the framers, else they wouldn't sign.

None of the first 10 amendments are more important than others.

Recall, the US was settled by people fleeing govt tyranny. A govt who attacked them on their own land to force what the govt wanted.

Americans do not live in constant fear of firearms. I suppose certain inner cities do, but I have never felt any fear of firearms.

https://www.nap.edu/read/18319/chapter/3 references a 2013 CDC study of defensive gun use, which didn't show the results the CDC wanted, so they never published it.

Defensive use of guns by crime victims is a common occurrence, although the exact number remains disputed (Cook and Ludwig, 1996; Kleck, 2001a). Almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million (Kleck, 2001a), in the context of about 300,000 violent crimes involving firearms in 2008 (BJS, 2010).

So ... about 30K people in America are injured by firearms yearly, but over 200K are saved by someone having a firearm. That doesn't even include the times when violence is stopped just by displaying the firearm before escalation happens.

Every life taken by any means is terrible.

There are also some gun laws that make little sense. The US requires a Federal license to own a "silencer". Don't believe the movies or TV. Guns fired using the best baffling solutions are 10dB quieter - so instead of 130dB, they are 120dB. You'll still hear them and they will still sound like a firearm. The movies and TV are all wrong on this. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/wp/2017/03/20/are-firearms-with-a-silencer-quiet/ It is amazing that people charged with creating laws about firearms are so ignorant.

There is a legal standoff silent weapon that has been around a long time - a bow and arrow.

Rather than looks for ways to restrict live-saving technology from people of sound judgement and sound mind, how about we go to better education and training?

And we should close the loophole in private firearm sales which gets around background checks too.

Will someone please hold my beer while I try to hit this target?

Biden said last month following a mass shooting in Colorado, "I don't need to wait another minute, let alone an hour, to take common sense steps that will save lives in the future."

Then why did he wait weeks since last month until now to simply make more "executive orders"?

Been quite a few shootings since he said this, so in his own words Biden failed to take common sense steps to save those people's lives.

Please relax and go back and read what I wrote, leave the emotion out of this, be rational. I’m a gun owner and collector, licensed and law abiding and I know hundreds of gun owners which includes a lot of staunch liberals, I have never heard in over 30 years a single person that wanted or contemplated of overthrowing the government and now I heard some chatter of fear and angst of this administration threatening to take away gun rights and if Biden is going to do that, not only will that make him a one term President, Biden will put the GOP back into power so fast, he would be creating extremism. 5 seats are in jeopardy for the Dems in the House and if they lose those 5 seats, it game over for them and the Biden agenda. You go Joe!

Your fellow Trump-lovers tried to overthrow the government and assassinate elected congresspeople just three months ago.

It always seems to me that the people who know the least about firearms, and have had little to no exposure to them, are the ones who fear them the most. Also don't actually understand what they are talking about.

there is no such thing as a semi-automatic military assault rifle these days. The military uses full auto, which is basically impossible to obtain in the civilian world. Civilian versions of military weapons are drastically changed mechanically, the biggest change being that they are semi-auto. But they cosmetically resemble army guns, so the belligerently uninformed who don't know the difference get their collective panties in a wad.

and have had little to no exposure to them, ar

That's a perspective. I had too much exposure to them and despise everything about them, especially in civilians hands.

Civilian versions of military weapons are drastically changed mechanically,

And can be converted so their killing power equals that of the military's.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

PTownsend. Perhaps so, but the same could be said for any weapon. Plus, the glaring fact that nobody seems to want to address is that so-called "military style weapons" are used in only a small fraction of crimes and killings. Trying to ban them is a purely political exercise in cynicism rather than an honest attempt to solve the larger problem of violence in America.

The one constant in the entire common sense gun control discussion is fear....

A small minority of fearful and scared gun zealots, not responsible firearms owners, captured the NRA...

In turn, Repub politicians everywhere are fearful and scared of the organization...

Hopefully the its recent bankruptcy and highlighting of illegal activity and corruption by its leadership will allow the responsible firearms owners to regain control...

But the gun zealots will continue to get fed a diet of fear and anger by far-right media hate machine...and continue to worship their guns over their children...

Disingenuous.

and now I heard some chatter of fear and angst of this administration threatening to take away gun rights

Far right fringe sites on the internet are not always reliable intel.

and if Biden is going to do that, not only will that make him a one term President, Biden will put the GOP back into power so fast, he would be creating extremism.

It's never the fault of the far right, is it? It's always down to someone else.

Remember the rhetoric of the 45ists between November and January 6th? I do.

It was promising that something was going to happen and how it would be the fault of everyone else for not kneeling at the alt right altar.

No one wants to overthrow the government, but the millions of law-abiding gun owners are not going to allow the Federal government dictate to them what firearms they can or cannot own, that would be the fastest way to create extremism.

The federal government already dictates which firearms are legal.

So far I have been pleasantly and genuinely surprised at the first movements of the Biden administration.

Thank you for accepting that the GOP are extremists.

It's about time. We have gun shows in my home city where the billboards scream 'Get 'em before they're prohibited!!!!'. And the police force and dealers at these shows DO NOT enforce background checks. And look at what the Disciples of the Traitor Don tried to do last year. Not to mention the school shootings, and the recent HATE CRIMES against ethnic Oriental people that the sassymouth Spankee Don incited with his haughty lip and juvenile 'kung flu' jokes.

And during a school shooting a few years ago, the greedy NRA loudmouth RAN to a friend's yacht for shelter because he is GUILTY of spreading gun worship hysteria, fear and gossip in order to fill his terrorist pocket.

Biden will put the GOP back into power so fast, he would be creating extremism.

Thank you for accepting that the GOP are extremists.

The late George Bush quit his lifetime NRA membership after the 1995 OKC bombing. He was GOP but he was smarter than that.
