Nice! A powerful symbolic event underscoring the West's resolve in standing up to tyranny.

Nice that they had to OK it with the Russians first.

-28 ( +16 / -44 )

Nearly a year in, Ukraine still stands free and independent, Zelenski is still president and Joe Biden, not Putin stands in Kiev.

There are hard times and days ahead to be sure, but yesterday’s visit was a good day for the good guys.

25 ( +41 / -16 )

Nice that they had to OK it with the Russians first.

If by Ok it with Moscow you mean “I’m going to Kiev and if you don’t want war with the US and NATO, you’ll go drink a vodka.”, you are correct.

Biden told them he was going and likely told them if they knew what was good for them, they’d stand down.

The Russians know what’s good for them and they did.

That’s not getting an OK.

Ukraine will be the most indebted nation in the history of Europe- calls for peace don’t make armament suppliers profit…

Ukraine will be the most indebted nation in the history of Europe- calls for peace don’t make armament suppliers profit…

Funny how a people at risk of seeing their homeland overrun by a horde of war criminals put debt burden rather farther down the list.

Maybe the rest of Europe should have just surrendered to the Nazis rather than go into debt, eh?

I mean we can all see what a mess post war Western Europe turned into with its robust economy and strong democratic institutions.

19 ( +34 / -15 )

Ukraine will be the most indebted nation in the history of Europe- calls for peace don’t make armament suppliers profit…

How is Ukraine supposed to make peace with Russia, a country which denies the legitimacy of Ukrainian sovereignty. It's a genuine question.

The only way Ukraine gets a real peace, and not just a brief cessation in hostilities is either becoming a part of the EU, NATO, or some other defensive pact.

11 ( +23 / -12 )

Strange that he had to seek Russian permission to go there given that the Russians have been losing for a year. Or so we are told.

Yeah, Pooh-tin “gave” Joe permission. Go with that in todays speech. Lol.

12 ( +27 / -15 )

Mr Kipling

Nice that they had to OK it with the Russians first.

Imagine if they didn't, and Russia, not knowing, sent missiles to Kyiv, accidentally killing the US president. Bam. WW3.

24 ( +33 / -9 )

kurisupisu

Ukraine will be the most indebted nation in the history of Europe-

Don't worry, Russia will pay for its reconstruction as part of a peace feal.

Only certain areas of Ukraine sovereignty are in question

No. This isn't true. Go back and read Putin's speech at the beginning of the invasion.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.businessinsider.com/putin-denies-reviving-russian-empire-says-ukraine-not-real-country-2022-2%3famp

Primarily area's built by Catherine the great.

Oh, I see. So if any country controlled an area they have rights to the area into perpetuity? I guess Russia has claims of Eastern Germany and the Brits to New England?

14 ( +28 / -14 )

Thank you, Mr. President, for showing us… reminding us that the free world is united against the thugs of the world…; the West and the world stands with Ukraine and we’re not afraid of Russia and their pathetic allies; democracy and freedom will prevail(!)…; stay strong, Ukraine.

19 ( +30 / -11 )

Primarily area's built by Catherine the great.

And now part of Ukraine.

And Putin wanted it all. He said so himself.

19 ( +29 / -10 )

Awa no Gaijin

How is Ukraine supposed to make peace with Russia, a country which denies the legitimacy of Ukrainian sovereignty. It's a genuine question.

Only certain areas of Ukraine sovereignty are in question

Actually none are in question.

Although Putin wants you to believe that all of Ukraine isn't a real country.

Primarily area's built by Catherine the great.

Sovereignty is decided by ancient history.

14 ( +25 / -11 )

America does it again. Shows up in Ukraine. What a country. Admire America for its strong stance against evil. So, when is Prime Minister Kashida going to make a call on Ukraine?

8 ( +18 / -10 )

Good for Biden.

Remember when the MAGA losers tried to paint him as Sleepy? Turn's out he's way more awake than any of them gave him credit for. He just keeps outmaneuvering them over and over and over and over and over.

21 ( +33 / -12 )

Strange that he had to seek Russian permission to go there given that the Russians have been losing for a year. Or so we are told.

Obviously this "permission" line, laughable though it is, is the Kremlin/St. Petersburg line of the day.

The text above says:

Russia was notified before Biden's departure, officials in Washington and Moscow said, apparently to avoid the risk of an attack on Kyiv while he was there.

And nothing more.

14 ( +23 / -9 )

Russia says it has annexed nearly a fifth of Ukraine

Perhaps on paper, in the deluded minds of Putin, his fellow criminals in the Kremlin, and in the imagination of the global anti-west /anti-democracy extremists that support Russia's invasion and attempt at imperialistic expansion.

18 ( +28 / -10 )

And Putin is nowhere to be found!

Funny that….

12 ( +23 / -11 )

Putin must be pissed off.

one year on, & Biden gets to Kiev before he does.

16 ( +27 / -11 )

@Awagaijin Only certain areas of Ukraine sovereignty are in question

Where are you from that enables you to determine what areas constitute the sovereignty of Ukraine? China, Russia and their partners try as they might, have not yet seized full control of the planet.

10 ( +20 / -10 )

Probably ? Wtf ?

Yeah I like definitely, totally and magnificently much better.

7 ( +13 / -6 )

Kudos to Biden making the big trip over there, and even his speech was commendable.

Looking at the TV pics of the two Presidents walking in Central Kiev, it's extremely moving as they passed an endless mass of maybe 100,000 small Ukrainian flags planted in a park, each one representing a dead Ukrainian citizen - brings it home how catastrophic the numbers are, that the Russians can do this to their neighbours.

How utterly shocking for their families and friends of the fallen ones, that they're now just reduced to a small flag in a park, their hopes and aspirations of a peaceful life on this planet snuffed out by the most evil tyrant walking on this earth still today, but for how much longer.......

The primary duty of the President,is to provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, secure the blessings of liberty,no where does it say do anything for Ukrainain

Covered under the first part of your statement:

To provide for the common defense

15 ( +27 / -12 )

Big week for the Soviets, anniversary of the start of the two week Special Military Failure.

Putin will be demanding lots of his young boys die in the frozen mud for a few more yards of someone else's land. He needs pictures of extra mud for his big speech.

Great timing from Biden, well done that man. Putin will be furious and will no doubt demand that his generals lob an extra amount of missiles into civilian areas this week.

14 ( +25 / -11 )

Good on President Biden. Showing solidarity with Ukraine is very important.

19 ( +30 / -11 )

Yrral

The primary duty of the President,is to provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, secure the blessings of liberty,no where does it say do anything for Ukrainain

I think that's cover in 'provide for the common defense'.

Also, you forgot to mention that the president is the Chief Diplomat of the US, and he is doing a wonderfull job.

13 ( +22 / -9 )

Absolutely brilliant move Mr President...

After four years of weakness and appeasement under the previous administration, once again showing the US can lead the free world against tyranny...

Paints Putin for the coward he is - hiding in the Kremlin or only venturing out in his armored train....

https://nypost.com/2023/02/17/vladimir-putin-traveling-in-armored-train-over-plane-fears/

Splits the Repubs and only highlights their internal war - the RINOs will have to applaud this, the kook brigade will go all-in criticizing it...

3 ( +15 / -12 )

Nice that they had to OK it with the Russians first.

Glad to hear the Russians are OK with Biden visiting Kyiv, something Putin ain’t ever going to do.

Seeing Biden feted in Kyiv must be for Putin like a guy who got dumped by the girl of his dreams watching her dance to his favorite song with her new, handsomer and more successful, boyfriend at his own mom’s wedding that she invited them to because she really likes the new guy and isn’t very sensitive to her son’s feelings.

After almost 113 billion , Ukraine is still being carved up like a turkey at Thanksgiving , imagine an American soldier begging a foreign government for help, Ukrainain soldiers on BBC are being grounded into the earth,a correspondence with the BBC witness,a string of Ukrainain soldiers in agony at a hospital on the Frontline

-14 ( +9 / -23 )

Every American president needs a war. Japan needs a strong defence to make sure they never get pushed in between the US and China.

-15 ( +7 / -22 )

"We have every confidence you're going to continue to prevail," he said.

The New York Times reported that he took a 10-hour train journey from Poland to reach Kyiv.

Very brave of Biden.

10 ( +19 / -9 )

When Putin makes his speech today, will he declare "WAR"? Or continue to gaslight the Russian rubes with his "special military operation" shtick?

4 ( +13 / -9 )

The US warned Russia about Biden's visit.

7 ( +12 / -5 )

Continuation of the America(ns) last policy.

-10 ( +10 / -20 )

Gotta Love the Presidents Tie, thank you Sir.

7 ( +15 / -8 )

Yesterday, in the US was "President's Day" extended to Kyiv.

3 ( +10 / -7 )

Putin invasion plans of Ukraine began in 2019. Trump knew nothing about it.

3 ( +10 / -7 )

U.S. President Joe Biden visit is more than symbolic, the significance and timing is imperative.

The Government of China has reportedly contemplating openly supplying the Government of Russia lethal aid.

At the same time suggesting a peace proposal.

Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced a series of loan guarantees amounting to over $5 billion, the details soon to be announced.

Putin could take the initiative, either fully commit to a all out spring offensive or sue for a peace settlement.

Support for Ukraine must be solid and unequivocal.

3 ( +11 / -8 )

The trip took place a day before Putin was due to make a major address on Tuesday, setting out aims for the second year of what he now calls a proxy war against the armed might of Washington and the transatlantic military alliance NATO.

I'd bet when Putin delivers his speech, he will be standing on a large, elaborate, fake facade of the flagship Moskva, which Putin will claim is still sailing around the Black Sea - rather than rusting underneath it...

The "one-week" special military operation is now a year long war - one in which Russia is running out of weapons, ammo, and manpower, and losing badly. It's economy is in shatters and it is without any allies and friends except other tyrants and dictators...

The poor Russian people are once again betrayed by their leaders...

1 ( +10 / -9 )

Putin in contrast is jailing Russians who dare speak out aginst him and his war.

9 ( +17 / -8 )

A absolute great way to observe our President’s Day. President Biden is an even greater President than George Washington.

-8 ( +9 / -17 )

This was a powerful move by a leader.

Great job, Joe.

5 ( +17 / -12 )

THIS is how you throw shade at the superpower level.

6 ( +13 / -7 )

When Putin makes his speech today, will he declare "WAR"? Or continue to gaslight the Russian rubes with his "special military operation" shtick?

My guess is he will do the one-arm swagger thing and once again attempt to distract Russians from the incompetence of their government and armed forces by screaming about Nazis and threatening nuclear weapons again.

3 ( +13 / -10 )

Joe went to an active war zone where no U.S. forces are operating to show moral support for a democratic nation.

That was bold and Joe was the one who did it. That’s why his political detractors heads are exploding. Because they know the public is going to justly credit him for his leadership.

5 ( +14 / -9 )

President Biden is an even greater President than George Washington.

Biden, Jefferson, Obama and Washington. The greats.

1 ( +11 / -10 )

6 month from now Ukrainain will force to negotiate or funding will be cut off, because of debt ceiling

-16 ( +4 / -20 )

6 month from now Ukrainain will force to negotiate or funding will be cut off, because of debt ceiling

Yeah, not so much.

The idea that the US is going to abandon Ukraine is the fever dream of a cult.

4 ( +15 / -11 )

Good work from Biden.

Not great approval ratings but higher than Ronald Reagan at the same stage of the presidency.

Good to see him making a stance against an appalling invasion.

11 ( +19 / -8 )

Good job, Mr. President.

8 ( +16 / -8 )

It’s good that President Biden went to Ukraine there. After all, Ukraine is the front line between peace and democracy and violence and autocracy.

5 ( +12 / -7 )

Watch for the Russians to use Joe's visit as an excuse to launch a "massive" attack on Ukraine saying they were provoked.

Like they weren't going to do it anyway. Like they are going to do more now that Joe has visited than they were before and that their actions have been made stronger because of Joe's visit.

BUNK. Total BUNK.

5 ( +13 / -8 )

How is Biden "showing resolve"?

By visiting the capital of a democratic nation in a war for its existence DURING active combat operations without US troops on the ground.

That is how.

Asked and answered.

6 ( +17 / -11 )

He's given the Ukrainians a blank check, basically, funded by Americans who never consented to having their tax dollars funneled off to a country where the president's son had been set up in a cushy job for which he wasn't even slightly qualified.

He actually did get consent from Americans through our elected reps. That's how it works in my country. Support for Ukraine is pretty bipartisan, not unsurprisingly. Nobody wants to go back to the days of stronger countries taking what they want from smaller countries.

8 ( +13 / -5 )

While RuSSia's murdering dictator and wanna be czar is hiding in his bunker behind a long desk ....

..... real world leaders meet and support despite the ongoing war crimes and genocide attempts by RuSSia.

Ukraine prevails!

4 ( +12 / -8 )

U,the law of nature, the strong conquer the weak,so do not be corrupt, especially if you are weak

-13 ( +1 / -14 )

"As long as it takes, that is how long we are going to be with you."

That was the take away from the trip.

Ukraine knows who its friends are.

Ask the people on the street how much this visit to their endangered homeland meant to them.

6 ( +14 / -8 )

Readers, some of you have become fixated on this topic. If you have already posted here today, then please take a break for at least two hours.

Ukrainian soldiers in agony at a hospital on the Frontline

At least they’re in a hospital, unlike the Russian soldiers who are left to die & rot in the fields

11 ( +16 / -5 )

Biden’s US, after one full year of throwing the kitchen sink at Russia and gathering 41 of the worlds riches nations, is still not winning. The Ukrainians are suffering. Do not prolong the war.

-8 ( +7 / -15 )

Xi the pooh, lil Kim, and Puti must be screaming in their official government issued communist-based handbooks! Remember, if Putin loses this war, all the countries that supported Putin also looks weak in the eyes of its followers and any potential allies. It will be harder for those same countries to get the support of the people for their own aspirations like invading Taiwan!

Biden has just made Putin flinch on the world stage!

How many people will "accidently" fall out of windows to satiate Putin's displeasure of this event getting attention around the world?

7 ( +13 / -6 )

Biden had to do this especially as the one year mark of Putin/Lukashenko invasion nears.

I do not like Zelensky, but for now there must be solidarity against the Putin Axis.

1 ( +8 / -7 )

Kyu,Biden best try to save it what left of his own support ,going to Ukraine, majority do not care

-14 ( +4 / -18 )

Our tax money literally up in smoke.

-12 ( +6 / -18 )

Putin's Russia after one full year of fighting a WW1 style trench warfare in the year 2023 with the support of close to zero friendly nations is still not winning.

9 ( +14 / -5 )

Obviously choregraphed to show how, ahem, brave and courageous Biden is!

Heh, it's funny to see you guys angry that Biden looked brave and courageous.

8 ( +18 / -10 )

The air raid siren was staged.

as they called Russia beforehand and told them not to attack.

-12 ( +7 / -19 )

The air raid siren was staged.

Who cares? So was the Russian referendum.

9 ( +15 / -6 )

U.S. President Joe Biden visit has diplomatic and political reason and logic.

Both Russia and Chinese governments are pushing for a UN sponsored exchange of Nord Stream probe findings in an attempt to undermine confidence amongst Ukraine global partnership.

Reviewing Russo-Ukraine war map live show an entrenchment.

This war has no realistic prospect of a breakthrough that will end hostilities.

U.S. President Joe Biden could well be sounding out Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy terms to end this war. And at the same time test the ground for any compromise.

U.S. President Joe Biden didn't visit for a walk about.
