What the US would have to do is run budget surpluses for a few decades. That means tax increases, a reduced military and fewer public services. There is no other way. The reason for the trade deficit is the ready availability of US debt instruments on global financial markets. Nations intending to run a trade surplus with the US use their excess US Dollars to buy those US Treasury notes. Doing that prevents Dollars from building up in surplus that would drive their value down, drive up the value of trading partner's currencies and otherwise self-correct the trade imbalance. The US is its own worst enemy by deficit spending because it hands its trade partners the means to perpetuate the US trade deficit. Raise taxes, cut services and the military to run budget surpluses and the trade imbalance will quickly begin to subside. This is the one and only way to get out of the current trade deficit. There is no other way.
