Probably the right thing to do despite the partially defensible objections from the libertarians.

I think we can do without it. I’m sure the NHS could do without it.

My late UK grandfather smoked a pipe, the odd cigar, he used to put the pipe in his pocket and set himself on fire, once on a bowling green. I saved the day, I yelled "grandpas on fire"

Yet I was comforted by the whiff of his favourite pipe tobacco, his rack of pipes, his fastidious filling, the joy of puffing the afternoon away.

The NHS needs a break financially, no doubt.

Has smoking become a representation, a stigmatization of social status?

Yet society is calling for the decimalization of cannabis?

I hate the smell of tobacco on clothes.

Yet I openly allow my close friends to smoke in my "conservatory".

I don't need the state to enact laws to require people to conform with threat of sanction, I would rather smoking be treated accordingly as a nicotine addiction.

I think you mean decriminalization?

I think it’s better to look at each ‘vice’ on its individual merits or lack of them. We aren’t necessarily comparing like with like. You can use cannabis without smoking it and there is some evidence of its benefits for certain conditions.

Fair point.

Another approach is to jack up the cost of them even further. Make them so expensive that maybe you can afford one ciggie at Christmas. Ban the duty-free ciggies too.

Cannabis can be consumed without tobacco.

I am quite surprised anyone in the UK can afford to smoke.

As of December 2023, a pack of 20 currently stands at an eye-watering £15.67. That is about ¥3,000. In Japan, as of August 2020, the price of a typical pack of cigarettes ranges from ¥400 to ¥530.

Are people being mugged for the ciggies?

Yes, thank you Jimizo, for the correction, it didn't appear correct, my spelling need work, back of the class.

I worry we, people, society, government, is in a constant state of judgement.

The word "nanny state" hides a multitude of sins within this government, deflection from the reality of a society divided by economic policies that neither promote a fair equal tax system, or social justice.

I note with alarm, an education system, that is broken.

Focusing on tobacco sales, I have been aware that those who "smoke, drink", should be required to contribute more.

"decimalization" of cannabis, did I really write that....... i did!

Wallace, cigarettes, nicotine, quite rightly should not be associated directly with marijuana.

What surprises me is the governments ironic insistence of "phase out" one, and "decriminalizing" the other.

Smoking is a filthy and vile anti-social habit.

I’m sure the NHS could do without it.

That's not so clear. An increasing burden on the NHS is people living longer and developing more late life health problems. Smoking levels have dropped significantly over the last 30 years or so, but the NHS still struggles.

Smoking is a filthy and vile anti-social habit

As long as people don’t do it around me I tend not to judge it that harshly.

I do remember leaving a few izakaya because of the smoke. Even I stunk of it after leaving.

Smoking could be annhilated and the precious NHS would still be in trouble.

Junk food produces more health problems than smoking ever could.

Yawn.

If these videos are yet another trivial thing which upsets you, just don’t watch.

No need to give yourself an ulcer over it.

Absolutely. Forget passive smoking. I can the passive obesity creeping on anytime I’m within three metres of someone eating a bag of Monster Munch.

Businesses have to corral smokers in a pen, outside in the rain and snow. huddled together like lepers.

Even the vapers.

Soon there will be cameras and loudhailers, HR with megaphones, on hand shouting come in employee number so-and-so, your iron lung *(invasive mechanical ventilation**)*** is awaiting your **strapping to.

It will be alcohol next, then fast food.
