I expected this; no big surprise, at all.

Why is it necessary to mention his race in the headline?

Summary of article: The candidate is Black, that is all.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The GOP fielded 36 black candidates in the most recent election; the Democrat Party basically forced 3 black candidates out of senate races;after a historic shellacking Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi refused to step aside and made Steny Hoyer and Jim Clyburn (first black Majority Whip) battle to see who will lead the Democrats in the House.

But the Chicago mayor race is an item here because it features a black congressman????

I would much rather see Rep. Luis V. Gutierrez as Mayor of Chicago then Danny Davis. But the best candidate is probably Rahm Emanuel. I hope he is the next Mayor of Chicago.

Illinois is broke. Obama and his cronies have taken the corrupt Chicago model to DC and nearly ruined the country. I hope a Democrat wins and reaps the blowback.

if he identifies himself as a Black Congressman then he will hardly be post-racial.

MisterCreosote

Obama and his cronies have taken the corrupt Chicago model to...[blah, blah, blah]

Once again MisterCreosote speaks of which he knows very little or nothing at all. Chicago is not corrupt. It is a fine, clean city with huge areas and venues for family fun. It has a great nightlife and world class eateries. There will be quite a fight to become mayor of such a world class city.

As far as Illinois being broke. Gov. Quinn ran on a platform of raising taxes to help straighten out the mess and he won. MisterCreosote is just pissed because a Republican could not even beat someone who took over for Blago (remember Blagojevich?). Illinois will do just fine in the future with the new honest governor.

I hope a Democrat wins and reaps the blowback.

For crying out loud you don't know a thing about Chicago do you. Any Republican running for Mayor doesn't hold a chance in hell of being elected Mayor. Chicagoans would never be so stupid to even consider an idiot Republic to take on the complicated task of running Chicago.

@goodDonkey, Yes Chicago is that if you are non-minority and live in one of the "good areas" but you need to take a look at areas on the Southside (the ones that have not been gentrified yet), and look at the violent crime rates. If you did a bit of research, you would have found the article about 2 state representatives from the Chicago area who back in April 2010 requested the IL governor to bring in the National Guard to keep the peace in the streets (up to that point, Chicago had 113 murders, the same number that were killed in Iraq and Afg during the same period).

consider an idiot Republic to take on the complicated task of running Chicago.

Maybe they need more of the same genuis types that have run the city in the ground so far to keep it going.

They were grandstanding. It's not like there is war or riots in any of the streets. It is Drug crime. Simple as that.

I suppose you would criticize New York or L.A. for the same bullshit?

Sorry if the streets of Chicago are too tough for you. Just stay away and you will be fine.

If you think that Chicago is run into the ground then you've obviously never been to Chicago.

What's on the black Congressman's schedule today?

Right on. The media doesn't even see their hypocrisy. The headline could have been "Rep. Danny Davis announces bid for Chicago mayor"

but instead it is "Black congressman announces bid for Chicago mayor"

Race relations, say hello to your nemesis: the media.

What percentage of black blood do you have to have in order to be able to cal yourself black? Color is not important anyway.

a coalition of black leaders / the black vote

Why can't they just be 'leaders' and 'voters'?

If it's drug crime, tell it to the family of the kid that got beaten while he was a bystander of a gang fight (it was on the news). I have family that lives in the Southside, and they are not involved in the drug trade, but they have to suffer the consequences (and don't give me that old line then they should move. How about actually getting these dirtbags off the streets, or letting law abiding citizens have the right to keep a gun).

But, if you are tough enough for the Windy City, more power to you. But I think they need to do a lot of street cleaning of crime in the city.

They're Democrats - like your hero Carter. Identity politics is central to cultural Marxism.

WTF. How is a black person running for office news? Why does the author think that his/her race matters?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Any word on what the black Congressman's black platform is?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Too much about nothing. Maybe we are forgetting that we have an African American, black man as the USA president while focusing on just a city. I agree with Alphaape, the USA needs to clean up it's corrupt police, corrupt prisons and keep hoodlums off the streets, and shall I add control the NRA, I gust saw an American truck for sale and you get your own AK 47 too! WTF??

You provide anecdotal evidence that one very tragic and heineis murder represents

I do not dispute that there are enclaves of extremely dangerous areas to live. However I tried to clue you in that every huge city in the U.S. has a murder problem. I thought you could connect the dots that the gangs existence is primarily a function of drugs. Yes they kill completely innocent people both by accident in drive-bys and purposely as in the example you provided. However that is not a reflection of the hundreds of extra cops Mayor Daley has hired over the years of his administration. He also got a lot more cops physically walking the beat in areas. You try to represent Chicago as a city in decay which could not be further from the truth. It is vibrant, so much so that you needed to add the caveat of excluding areas of gentrification on the South Side and did not even bother to include the previously gang infested West Side. I suspect you did not include the West Side because it is a great example of an area that is turning around and has significantly crossed the threshold.

More guns in Chicago is NOT the answer. Sensible people understand that and others have the naive notion that more guns in a city will reduce crime. I understand that a person's position on guns is probably fixed so I will not try to persuade otherwise.

If you were in Chicago and did not have a wonderful experience I feel sorry for you. Dozen's of five star restaurants, Navy Pier, world class Museums, world class institutions of learning, world class parks, beaches, harbors, the free quaint zoo of Lincoln Park, operas and classic orchestras on the cheap, a multitude of free concerts downtown inside a park, festivals, music venues indoors and outdoors that would blow your mind, boat tours, sports - NFL, NHL, NBA, and 2 MLB teams, ethnic neighborhoods with proud gates as entrances, and way, way too many other places and experiences await you if you were willing to get out of the southside and experience Chicago. So no, I don't accept your characterization that Chicago is a city "run into the ground" as you put it. You sir are full of it.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@gooddDonkey, I agree with you that there are plenty of attactions to see in Chicagoland. I have been to some of those places that you have mentioned. The city is not totally run into the ground, but it is not where it should be. With all of the attractions you mentioned, how about the public school system. Look at the graduation rates and how the students test.

As far as gun control goes, the city had some of the strictest measures, making it hard for law abiding citizens to have a gun to protect themselves, but yet it still is leading the nation in gun murders. That's not the fault of the NRA. There are laws on the books that prohibit criminals from having guns, but just like the other laws that they have broken, they have chosen to break this one also, and the end result is the people who by law are able to want to get a gun can't and the "bad guys" win.
