No, this is absolutely untrue. The United States has not always been perfect in the past, especially in S. America, but the idea that this would have just been explained away as a demonstration.
There was an election, there was a winner declared. The losing side rioted. And this wasn’t then or in the future, it was now and it drew direct inspiration (and consultation with Chief Trumper Steve “3-shirts” Bannon).

Watching a TV report. They smashed up the place quite badly. Bolsonaro condemns the violence.

Monkey see, monkey do alright. MAGAt wannabes and crybabies who can't accept the results of a democratic election. Brazil has a history of fascism - the Vargas dictatorship, and I remember Brazil being fascist until around 1985 or so. But that's no excuse for these chumps to be pulling this crap.
And don't call them 'demonstrators'; they are losers, terrorists, fascist pukes and chumps! That's all there is to it.

If this had happened a few years ago, or a few years from now, or Bolsanaro been slightly less Trumplike, the US would be describing it as a prodemocracy protest against 'a regime' and the efforts to stop them, and the arrests, trials, convictions and sentences as a 'brutal crackdown'.
Express sister
What does this non-sequitur have to do with the story of far right thugs invading the halls of Brazil’s government institutions and threatening democracy?
Nemo
The right to protest does not include breaking and entering and destruction of property, both of which are documented here.
And there is zero evidence that the election was anything other than free and fair.

@Nemo
Ahhhh.. Thanks. Missed the nuance.
Tough times with so many conspiracy lunatics posting.

Brazil's version of Jan 6. What evidence of fair and free elections not being held? At least this time Bolsonaro denies any involvement.
painkiller
If proper elections aren't held the people have the right to protest

Thanks Trump. Republicans (and Desantis would be fine even though Trump hates him), please don't nominate someone so crazy. When you lose the election please just say congratulations and move on. I'm sure even Desantis will do this if he loses. Trump being in the WH is not about serving the USA or being a world leader. Trump being in the WH is about serving Trump. And this gives other Trump like people bad ideas like what happened in Brazil. It's dangerous.

Drinking champagne on his buddies boat in Florida while his country burns.

The former President of Brazil is living illegally in Florida,he left Brazil, before Lula was sworn in

After giving that comment some thought it occurred to me that many parents cannot even model good behavior in front of their own children so maybe I am expecting too much.

You can't fix "STUPID" in the aping antics of our species and in this age of global social media the malignant contagion of rightwing gaslighting spread by the orange menace cannot be contained within borders. Meanwhile, Lula had better watch his back: Trumponaro has not a few fascist friends infesting the Brazilian military.

Pretty sure Ah_so was being fatuous/sarcastic.

@Ah_so
They stormed the building and smashed up parts of the congress and supreme court.
What kind of trumpsplaining pills have you been taking?
Desert Tortoise
Monkey see, monkey do.
Living abroad I was often nauseated by the willingness of people in well organized and well governed nations with fine traditions feel like they had to imitate the worst aspects of the US. Whether it was screaming tv ads that repeat the phone number to call six or seven times in a row, or their politics people would too often imitate the worst US habits. On top of that people in the US don't realize how closely they are watched and imitated abroad. Maybe if they did they would act a little better.

Trumpsonaro … enough said!
lucabrasi
Waiting for the usual suspects on this site to come out in defence of these losers….
Nemo
An incompetent response to a public health emergency.
Rioting to overturn an election they obviously lost.
A whining loser hiding in Florida.
is is Brazil or MAGA?
The jokes write themselves!
Fighto!
Dropkicks and losers. Imagine being so immature that instead of accepting a democratic decision, you attack your own institutions and parliament and call for military rule.
Sad that many of these criminals are wearing the honourable Brazil soccer jersey and defiling it.
Hope these scum all get dealt with.
Ah_so
I just see a peaceful walk round, no riot. If there was any violence, it was by ANTIFA infiltrators, or something.
What it definitely wasn't was neo-fascist agitators unable to accept that their crazy leader lost the election.
virusrex
I don't know what is more shameful for Brazilians right now, to be taken as a retrograde country without respect for democratic institutions or to be taken as an MAGA copycat.
TokyoLiving
Same as the trumpybelievers 2 years ago..
Same kind of moron in chief..
Same fascist stupidity..
Nemo
Because that’s how democracy works, right? Lose an election and weapon use your rubes to riot, break things and defecate in the halls of power. Bonus points if they assault police in the name of “patriotism”.
plasticmonkey
Tourists exercising their right to free speech. Some just trespassing. Let’s move on. Nothing to investigate and no one to be prosecuted.
