: the brilliant Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel depicting the inhumanity of racism and war is an excellent gateway into history for children whose lower level of reading ability prevents them accessing the "adult" versions of history that all informed citizens need to know in order to stop the return of the fascist plague.

Your claim isn't necessarily valid. By the 8th grade I was reading Samuel Elliot Morrison's history of WWII checked out from the library and already had my own small library of books about WWII. I wasn't the only kid that age with such interests either.

History repeats itself as farce with more monkey business from the red (neck) state famous for the "Scopes Trial" which canceled the teaching of evolution and ruined the career of one of its teachers, but this time the twist is folks with no qualifications in education scared of "mice"!!? Evidently, the evolution of education has some catching up to do in Tennessee: the brilliant Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel depicting the inhumanity of racism and war is an excellent gateway into history for children whose lower level of reading ability prevents them accessing the "adult" versions of history that all informed citizens need to know in order to stop the return of the fascist plague.

Texas, still ‘debating’ the Holocaust. Classy.

Well, there are thousand of bold that they can choose from that maybe doesn’t show certain images they don’t want kids to see is different than to outright ban the discussion or debate of the Holocaust.

Thanks for reminding me Bass that schools need to give both sides to every argument to reflect balance.

A mouse without clothes on? The horror. No wonder this shameless book was banned by those God-fearing folk.

8th Grade? That's 13 years old, here in Canada. Raging hormones, wild and crazy thoughts.

By age 13 every boy has looked at naked women in a magazine and swears on the playground and among friends outside of school. By age 13 a lot of girls and boys are already quite busy with each other. Absolutely nothing in that book is going to be new a 13 yo.

8th Grade? That's 13 years old, here in Canada. Raging hormones, wild and crazy thoughts. In other words, human development. This ban is nothing but mind control gone haywire.

In a BBC interview, the author said he was told the reasons for the ban were ‘nudity and profanity’, ie a cartoon of a mouse in the bath and the word ‘goddamn’.

I thought Texas had a pretty warm climate.

Red States believe the only books allowed in school libraries must have a title that starts with "The Art of".....

No, they have to start with "Once upon a time ...... "

No, they have to start with “In the beginning, Sky Daddy created the Heavens and the Earth…”

Man, for a group of people who love to whinge and sneer about ‘safe spaces’, they sure are hell bent on making sure that they are never, ever, EVER made to feel uncomfy. And Lord knows we don’t want the “very fine”, Charlottesville-type folks to feel awkward.

Spot on, Bingo!

Perhaps if Speigelman had said something more like “for Jews in the Holocaust life was a living H.E. double toothpicks” or “those darn cotton picking guards were mean” it would have been ok?

The book depicts the father, the survivor, being racist in private. You'd think the GOP would love it.

In Tennessee are there no biology lessons?

Of course there are. Here's the curriculum:

Lesson one: God invented you and evolution is a lie.

Lesson two: Gays should be punished.

Lesson three: Babies come from marriage. Your natural feelings are sinful.

Lesson four: It is biologically imperative to vote GOP. Anyone who doesn't is a mutant criminal.

Pretty concise, no?

More book-banning from the cancel-culture happy right.

Freedom of speech is under threat thanks to the authoritarian Republicans.

“It shows people hanging, it shows them killing kids, why does the educational system promote this kind of stuff? It is not wise or healthy,"

You should see the video games that your kids play when they get home.

In a state that lynched over 200 black people, banning an educational book about the holocaust just seems quaintly pathetic.

I haven't had my morning coffee yet so I'm struggling to see the undertone connecting them.

The lack of anti-cancel culture warriors commenting speaks volumes though. Maybe too busy mourning the loss of sexy M&M's.

No ‘cancel culture’ outrage from the right?

Despite being one of the greatest and most lauded graphic novels it has been used in education and academia for decades, won countless accolades and had its own exhibition in MoMA for addressing the most significant event in modern history.

But someone’s crazy tweets get deleted or M&Ms change their advertising and it’s the collapse of civilisation.

Regressive idiots in Tennessee , what a surprise!!!!

What next, removing biology because it involves explanation of human anatomy, theory of evolution because it goes against their backward beliefs……

Nary a peep from the right about censorship here. Telling.

suggesting that “racism is embedded in American society” (the bill’s definition of the theory) is just the same as denying that Hitler killed six million Jews.

To me it seems like denying racism is embedded in American society is the same as denying that Hitler killed six million Jewish people. If kids are denied the opportunity to learn all the subtle and unconscious ways racism affects the lives of Americans then there is no hope of ever eliminating it.

Not lost on me is maybe it was 15 or 20 years ago California and some other states were made fun of for trying to raise the self esteem of students in public schools. I was among them because to me actual achievements, succeeding at hard tasks, is what raises self esteem. One has self esteem because they are good at something. But now we see conservatives worrying that exposing their children to unpleasant ideas will make them uncomfortable and somehow subject them to "psychological distress".

They are hand drawn cartoons.

Welcome to a red state.

The same state who tried to prosecute John T. Scopes for violating a Tennessee law called the Butler Act. You may have read about it though one wonders if this is also not allowed to be taught in Tennessee?

Wow, where to begin? How is teaching kids about a violent and tragic historical event somehow promoting it? Do we stop teaching history entirely because so much of it involves violence? If you do not understand the mistakes from the past you are going to repeat them in the future.
