Your claim isn't necessarily valid. By the 8th grade I was reading Samuel Elliot Morrison's history of WWII checked out from the library and already had my own small library of books about WWII. I wasn't the only kid that age with such interests either.

By age 13 every boy has looked at naked women in a magazine and swears on the playground and among friends outside of school. By age 13 a lot of girls and boys are already quite busy with each other. Absolutely nothing in that book is going to be new a 13 yo.

To me it seems like denying racism is embedded in American society is the same as denying that Hitler killed six million Jewish people. If kids are denied the opportunity to learn all the subtle and unconscious ways racism affects the lives of Americans then there is no hope of ever eliminating it.

Not lost on me is maybe it was 15 or 20 years ago California and some other states were made fun of for trying to raise the self esteem of students in public schools. I was among them because to me actual achievements, succeeding at hard tasks, is what raises self esteem. One has self esteem because they are good at something. Wow, where to begin? How is teaching kids about a violent and tragic historical event somehow promoting it? Do we stop teaching history entirely because so much of it involves violence? If you do not understand the mistakes from the past you are going to repeat them in the future.
