It's wonderfully uplifting to read meaningless political rhetoric being spouted all around the world. Onward and upward. Happy days are here again. A chicken in every pot. Don't stop believin'.

In spite of the hurdles, having experienced the UK prior to the EU I would say that the opportunity is there. But how they can get there with a corrupt government and with Scotland and others pressing to leave from the union is an unknown at this point and just whistling in the dark

But not as dynamic or productive as it would have been inside a free trade block with the free movement of labor, a lack of border delays and access to the world’s biggest free trade zone.

Sorry, these are just the facts and they are not in doubt.

If and only if BoJo strives for and is successful in forging a CANZUK agreement with Canada, OZ and NZ.

Going at it alone is just not going to do it. Leave the EU? Fine, but find another Supranational Organization. CANZUK is a good idea.

Johnson supported immigration when he was mayor of London. It's his Conservative Party that has used immigration as an excuse not to invest.

As Michael Heseltine famously said, "Well, I think that you have to see Boris as a career map. He works it out, he decides which way the wind is blowing, and that wonderful phrase about a politician - a man who waits to see the way the crowd is running and then dashes in front and says, ‘Follow me’.”

Time is running out on Johnson's meaningless hot air performances. The people who voted Brexit/Tory because they thought removing foreigners would bring them higher income are finally beginning to realise they've been cheated by charlatans. The massive increases in fuel costs are going to make it a long cold winter for those without the money to pay their bills.

Johnson extoled the “Brexit freedoms” brought by Britain’s exit from the European Union, even as shortages of truck drivers and other workers cause economic hiccups.

Petrol stations free of petrol is the only freedom I can come up with.

Sadly the only thing worse than Bojo and his conservatives are the political opposition in UK. It seems as if the very idea of trying to run for public office and then endure the machinery of governing repels the most qualified people. This appears to be true in more nations than just the UK. It is the same tired, dishonest old faces and the same unimaginative party line policy dogmas year after year on both sides of the isle.

More hot air from this buffoon, with the usual suspects like 'Pretty' Patel cheering him on. Just five seconds into his speech, I switched off. Nauseating.

The problem for the U.K is that im just really struggling to see enough areas that they excel in to provide good times ahead for enough people to maintain a sense of stability and prosperity.

They do have some absolutely world class engineering companies - BAE, Rolls Royce etc. They still have some of the best universities in the world. They still have the advantage of universal english language and their geography is in some ways still a major asset. Tourism will always bring in solid dollars.

But they have few natural resources, like Australia or Canada and their tech industry is nothing compared to the U.S or India. The financial industry was a major plus, but now that is going to take a major hit.

I can see them doing well in shipbuilding, maybe some areas of nuclear tech, but the old euphemism about Britain being a nation of shopkeepers is likely to become more real now than it was created.

And that means low wages and poor jobs.

Boris should pursue this "upgrade the north" idea with vigour, but aside from shipbuilding, how are you going to achieve it? Upgrading infrastructure is generally a wise move, but where are the jobs at the end of that new rail line or motorway?

Britain needs to take a serious look at areas that might be able to succeed in. It needs to diversify its major earners.

Can they really compete with South Korea, Japan and China? The RN was considering buying new logistics ships to support their aircraft carriers from a Korean yard because the British yards could not compete on price. Even some Dutch and Norwegian yards have the hull and major machinery built in China and then bring the incomplete hull to their facilities in Europe to complete fitting it out.

Gideon Osborne was spouting crap about a ‘northern powerhouse’ when he was chancellor. Johnson is even more full of it than Osborne was.

Johnson basically said the northern seats that went Tory did so to get Brexit done. I very much doubt they’ll stay Tory, but I’m sure he’s working on the maths that the Tories don’t need these seats for a majority. He’ll leave the north to rot - Tory policy from Thatcher onwards.

The trouble is Bojo keeps telling the country they can bake their own Brexit cake and eat it, a proposition that is becoming manifestly hard to swallow as the harsh light of reality shines on the gaslit kingdom that becomes ever more insulated and disunited by the day.

I listened to the whole thing and it was just jolly backslapping delivered in the manner of a bad comedy act. Its very tempting to point out the individual lies, the humiliating withdrawal from Kabul being spun as a triumph for example, but the most important thing is that the poorest 30% of all non-pensioner households are now 1000 pounds poorer a year, just as food and utlility prices are climbing. Most of such people work. That is not leveling up by any stretch of the imagination.

I don't like Bojo at all but in a way he is right. Having been raised in England and knowing what the people are like, they will find their way. It might take some time but they'll be fine, no thanks to the government.

It is rather a global issue these days.

Britain slowly sliding down the Brexit rabbit hole. This man is simply incompetent to lead a country.

There absolutely no logical concept or reality to where Johnson pledges and promises have any substance.

They are economic and fiscal fairy stories.

The fact is that since UK joined the EEC, EU, the country and its workforce have been swept away from a sector wide addiction to a ruthless exploitation of eastern Europe's poorest and most vulnerable communities.

However these employees/workers are human beings.

There must be no way back, no more race to the bottom. Pay all a living wage.

The labour opposition must reconnect to a true socialist agenda, not ideological extremism.

C’mon, Bobo. Even you can’t honestly believe a word your saying, can you? The supermarket shelves are bare. There are lines for gas that last for days. Goods are sitting in ports going to rot because there aren’t any truck drivers. The Good Friday Agreement is in danger of collapse.

I remember asking a co-worker who immigrated from Ireland why Ireland produces so many great rock musicians. His answer? "there's nothing else to do there".

Just like the planned economies of the old USSR? Gee, that made everyone happy and prosperous. What was the old saying in the USSR? If I see a line I get in it because I know it is for something I probably need. Shortages of consumer goods were the norm. Quality was horrible (like 1970s British cars and motorcycles) and if you bought a car today it would not arrive for six or seven years. Socialism is a complete failure. UK of all countries should have learned that lesson from the decay of the 1970s. I understand people are unhappy with the distorted version of capitalism that prevails today but socialism won't improve anything. Read Adam Smith and David Ricardo. Understand how competitive markets are supposed to work. Then compare this to what we have in the real world and you will start to understand how far from competitive markets most "free market" nations are. The solution is not socialism but to enforce competition across the board.

Most of the Scandinavia countries have successful socialist-type policies. These policies are difficult for many Americans to understand, like Universal Healthcare.

The Scandinavian countries are very far from being socialist. Very far. They are capitalist in every sense of the word. If they were socialist Maersk and Electrolux would be state owned industries. Single payer healthcare systems are not socialist, especially when the health care providers are private physicians and there are private supplemental insurance available. And obtw, they pay about half as much of their income and GDP on health care as the US does while enjoying longer life expectancies.

You will see the left make that mistake many, many times. They havent really examined the way those countries operate. They just know its not the same as America. They are still capitalist.

In fact, Scandinavia is more akin to Australia, a country that is very much still capitalist, but also has universal healthcare etc. In Australia, its always been known as the "mixed market" economy. It was called that when I studied economics in high school many a year ago and that is also what Scandinavian countries are - mixed market economies, heavy on private enterprise where its appropriate but smart enough to realise that the market is not always appropriate.
