BP CEO's yacht outing infuriates Gulf residents

So Hayward goes yahting, and Obama goes golfing. Honestly, I don't know which is worse. The incompetent Obama, or the idiotic Hayward.

Seriously, get a grip. They're getting time off, whatever they're doing with it. I'm not saying it's a great idea, but it's no scandal.

Especially for Obama & Biden. Considering their job, if they can't go get a couple hours off everytime there's a big problem, they'll never get free time. I mean, their jobs makes the whole world's problems concentrating in their hands. Emergency status 24/7. I think there's ways to do it properly without offending people, and sure when one gets a job like that, one should expect little free time. But it's not like they were boasting "now whatch that drive" kinda thing either.

That't just it. I bet most people have taken a day off from the oil to visit someplace away from shore or sit at home. They could have taken a plane somewhere if they had the money. Everybody needs a day off, and as this guy does not use his own hands to clean the oil up, it doesn't matter where he is.

I think the thing to be upset about is that if he sold that $700,000 yacht, the money could go a way to clean up the mess. I say that, but I don't know how personally responsible he is for it.

I have to say when the house is burning down, one does not just take a vacation. It really sends the wrong signal! But, what the actions of both Obama and Hayward shows is the callous "I don't give a flip" attitude. If they were truly intelligent leaders, they would be down in the gulf 24/7. Maybe they could have relaxed with an restaurant and given that restaurant a little business that went down the toilet because of the spill. And the spill just keeps on a-coming. Amazing how Goldman Sacks dumped all of their stock just before the spill though.

Obama for a second reason: My understanding is that President Bush II stopped golfing after the Iraq War heated up. His logic was that it wouldn't look good for him to be seen out golfing while American soldiers were being killed in Iraq. Whether it was an honorable choice or a cunning choice, you be the judge. Either way, Obama being seen out golfing while the Gulf's economy is being destroyed conveys the the message that Obama doesn't give a sh*t.

I am pretty sure that people perform better at their jobs if they are able to take a day or two off, than if they try and work straight for months at a time.

That plus restricted media coverage plus several other things will foster conspiracy theories and I cannot say they are not justified. For many, the explosion and sinking are just so darned convenient and profitable. And it is simply amazing that in this day in age with all our technology and failsafes that this could happen.

I can understand people piling on Hayward, he's handled this whole thing in spectacularly poor fashion, but I do wonder what it is exactly that the people who disapprove of Obama's handling of the matter expect him to have done at this point?

From what I understand President Obama gets only 4-6 hours of sleep a night and has taken very few vacations, so it doesn't make sense to jump on him because he plays golf occasionally(as all other presidents have).

That's probably a true statement. The meltdown in front of Congress, comments about "the little people" and wanting your life back...just poor strategy overall. I can't say I really care about the boat race, no one can survive on work only, but the overall handling of the issue has been poor.

You are so right about that. The frustrated Japanese salaryman goes playing pachinko and the BP head, who incidentally is directly responsible for the destruction of the livelihoods of millions plus a huge swath of nature, goes sailing his luxury yacht. Everything in the right proportions.

Hayward will be back on the job, totally refreshed, to solve all his company's problems to the satisfaction of all.

In time of war a soldier works everyday, sleeps less then 4 hours at a time, and doesnt get to take a golf day.... Why shouldnt the Commander and Chief be any different. I think a president has the rest of his life to play after he completes his 4-8 years. He should not be spending our money playing when the country has so many major issues. Image is very important for a prez, and his rating has been reflecting his lack of image lately.

As for the BP guy... Hope half his pay is in stock options....

He is the CEO of a company that brings in a zillion dollars. He has quite a large salary. He's into yacht racing...big deal.

I wonder if this would be news if he went to a baseball game or went biking for a day.

Obama has had plenty of vacations. At least 3 this year so far, including 1 very recently, in the middle of the oil crisis. He goes and plays golf literally all the time. Probably a dozen times already, and we aren't even halfway through the year.

I don't blame him for taking vacations, or playing golf. However I question the image it sends. Thats the whole point of this. Both the head of BP and Obama are off having fun, while a disaster continues. If they need time off, they should take it, but it should be done a little more covertly. This is part of being a leader. Something neither Hayward, nor Obama seem to be able to grasp.

What could they do down there? Neither one of them is an engineer. They just get in the way really.

Bush only went to Camp David like, 149 times during the eight years he was "gifted" the presidency for a total of 487 days and he also spent 490 days at his ranch in Crawford where he went 77 times...
