Brazil mistakes sea 'trash' for plane crash debris

This is just a horrible, horrible accident, well I pray that it is only a horrible accident and that no terrorists were responsible for this. I can only pray for the victims of this terrible dissaster. I can't even begin to imagine how helpless everyone felt in this terrible storm out in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. RIP AF 447 victims.

If I'm ever on a plane like that I just hope that it ends quickly for all of us on the plane. You're in Mother Nature's hands at that moment and about to return to her so not much you can do but hope. RIP passengers and crew.

Have to agree with the above, and since we have to be careful with speculation here, just hope that if there is a silver lining to such a cloud then this crash will lead to improved air safety procedures.

The orange/black boxes may not add much to what is now known, but even so, every little piece of information must surely be vital. Good luck in the hunt!

French pilot thinks it was a bomb.

New reports are saying that none of the debris recovered so far was from the plane and probably are from another source.

Maybe the debris is from the other plane?

Surely the nuclear subs of France, Britain, the US and Russia would be able to pick up the noise of a pinger, designed as it is to be heard.

Sappquest is right, they say it all came from a ship/ships, including the oil.

God knows where the missing plane is, they could all be looking in totally the wrong area.

I still suspect all aboard died though, but as of now we're all back to square one, not knowing where the heck it came down or why.

I'm suspicious of those tranmissions from the black box etc. though, they don't seem to have a very large range, so unless a suitably equipped vehicle happens to pass within range they may never be found. I still say they should have GPS, surely that would have a bigger range and make it easier to find them?

There was an article on the Business Week website yesterday saying that the technology now exists that could send all the information now recorded on the black box back to a central location in real time. The airlines are resisting though because of the costs involved. If they are unable to find the black box this time though that will be looking pretty shortsighted. A plane falling from the sky for unexplained reasons is not exactly good for passenger confidence.

As for teleprompter's bomb post - well, no terrorist organization has claimed responsibility, but if you think about it, why would they? If there is no evidence of a bomb, they could just sit tight until they do it again. A scary thought. Better find that box I think.

This accident is becoming more and more intriguing. Shouldn´t they have spotted floating debris by now? The usual floating things that reach beaches or keep just buoying for a while? Even if the plane is somewhere else, that area is cruised by ships and they should have spotted debris.

They wouldn't issue communiques about responsibility if it was a sort of rehearsal for something more spectacular.

I'm not saying I think it was. I'm just saying anything is possible...

If people wouldn't pollute so much -it would be much easier finding this plane.

@dammit: GPS doesn't transmit any signal. GPS position is calculated using temporal variations in message sent by satellites, that's why it's called receiver. So putting a GPS in a flight recorder would be useless.

@GJDailleult and teleprompter: Terrorist organization would have every reasons to claim the attack. Terrorism, as the name says, is not about killing people for the sake of it, but it's about spreading terror/fear. Killing is only the mean, not the end.

Hehe, you're got a serious point here!! I totally agree.

So then the plane actually hasn't been found it sounds like. It also sounds like these poor souls had somehwere around 14 minutes of terror before they met their end. Not something I would like to imagine. I have always hated flying even in good weather and when crashes like this occur it makes me hate it that much more. Sympathy to the victims and their families, I hope the data recorders will be found and there can be answers for the families.

Not necessarily, it's a big ocean with a long coastline. I wouldn't expect them to find it quickly.

Also, have you actually seen how much "rubbish" is in our seas. Disgusting.

That pitot tube can really get airplanes into trouble. It is quite possibly the electrical system that heats it was suddenly taken out and then their indications were totally useless to control their speed resulting in the loss of control and crash. Pitot tube problems with another plane that sat somewhere in the Caribbean once with it uncovered crashed in the southern US. Cause was bees that nested inside had jammed the air pressure that is pertinent to accurate air speed measurements.
