Taxing US internet tech giants and making tax havens illegal would pay for 20 pandemics.

The extortionate and parasitic "Take back control" (and tax 'em) Tories are reverting to type before you can say "a full English Brexit, please". Who'da thunk it?

Never let a Corona crisis go to waste. 12% 消費税; coming soon to a Japan near you!

Coronavirus = best excuse to hide the Brexit cost !

So they tax us on what we earn, tax us on what we save, tax us on what we spend, Japan taxes us for dying. And where the hell does all this tax money go? Defence, subsidies for corporate Buisness, Wages for governance, parties, conferences for the elite, policing stupid laws we get fined for breaking. Now they need more because they so generously gave so little back. Makes me sick.

There is a huge hole in the public finances (of all major countries) and has been since the financial crash more than a decade ago which the Wuhan virus pandemic and the oh so lauded financial response to it has exacerbated. Unless this is managed very carefully by all governments it will lead to a melt down of the whole financial structure and a collapse of fiat currency the like of which has not been seen since the invention of money as a medium of exchange.

Yes there is a need to try to patch the hole but the suggested increases are counter productive and will just make the situation worse.

Agree tech giants need to be taxed properly and the playing field for the rest of the economy levelled but measures to boost the economy are more important, increase the economy and the tax take increases without inflicting more tax burden.

So radical suggestion, targeted tax reductions!

The end of comfortable, lazy, liberal hedonism is fast approaching. Some old fashioned virtues will need to be brought to the fore to survive in the new era. Domine, miserere nobis.

The absolute wrong time to raise taxes. Tax hikes are warranted in times of high inflation and full employment They need to study what happened in Japan after the govt hiked the consumption tax.

After brexit and c19 It certainly doesn't sound like a smart thing to do . In fact it is the exact opposite of smart.

I hope I am wrong but seems to me UK is headed for a deep deep recession.

So crash the economy with a pandemic and radical response, then tax the heck out of people to ensure the economy never recovers. They will soon learn that even the highest tax rates bring in no money when the economy is broken and people are broke.

This was going to happen sooner or later anyway. The corona-virus made it sooner. Look for many western countries to have a USSR style collapse.

It would certainly be a start.

Johnson will also be looking at the political damage he’d face by targeting pensioners. May stupidly gave cause for ‘the nasty party’ charge which helped blow away her majority. The Tories have thrown away a double-digit lead over Labour already.

The government is sinking lower and lower, what with a buffoon at the helm and lying, crazy man Cummings right beside him. This is not going to help them one bit. The rest of the EU must be happy they're well shot of the UK. And now the idiot also wants a foreigner (Abbott) to be UK's trade envoy????!!!! Yeah, sure, let's have an Australian as UK's next PM too, while you're at it.

Thieves. Cripple the economy with lockdowns and heavy restrictions, and then confiscate whatever's left with high taxation. The Tories behaving like a pack of power-crazed socialists.

Go after the corporate oligarchs who shift their profits overseas to avoid taxes and leave the ordinary folks and SMEs alone. You've already done enough damage.

Spoken like a good socialist.

Do you understand the difference between a free market and corporate socialism/crony capitalism? I don't think you do, and neither does the government.

SMEs, contractors and employees get slugged with heavy taxes and expensive regulations. On the other hand, big companies with the funds to hire expensive lawyers and control politicians get laws changed in their favour or simply have governments ignore those laws through tools of influence such as "political donations," threats to move their operations offshore and the like. It's more complex than that, of course, but this is an overview of what happens.

Comedy gold. That's the funniest thing I've read on here for ages, well done! Top, top irony.

Get used to it peeps. There’ll be more of this worldwide. Government gets bigger, we get poorer.

This sounds like a deliberate leak to sound out public opinion. Personally I'd be amazed if they actually did it. Raising corporation tax weeks before Brexit proper on Jan 1 2021 would be reckless for inbound investment. Raising capital gains tax, especially on houses, will lose lots of Daily Mail readers.

My guess would be increased taxation on more ordinary people by stealth. Choking local government grants and forcing them to push up rates would be one example. More NHS charges would be another.

I don't think you do

Condescend much?

My cat saw this whole thing coming a mile off with the Brexit anarchocapitalists.

threats to move their operations offshore and the like

like James Dyson?

It's more complex than that, of course

I think you've captured the essence well, though.

Actually, how things are playing out suits the Brexiteers' external locus of control perfectly.

Will the first casualty be that political football par excellence, the NHS?

Have the non-doms sold it off in all but signature already?

Govts the wolrd over are wanting to screw everyone even more now using this as an excuse, More tax for everyone on everyhting, and those morons in charge think thats gonna solve their problems.

Shows you the IQ of those in charge doesnt it ? But the scary part is that it shows you the IQ of those who put them in charge , the morons who vote, and they want to lower the voting age.............................haha you have to be playing with yourself to even think this would work. Typical isnt it of those pigs in govt all over the world.

Have you been paying attention what's going on? Guess not.

And "behaving like" doesn't mean the same as "are." Work on you reading comp, ol' chap!
