So far the mixed-race aspect is not being reported in the Japanese language media. Congratulations to Harry! And congratulations to Japan Today too for also showing the way!

Mizuame,

”So far the mixed-race aspect is not being reported in the Japanese language media.”

Actually, that aspect, and that fact that she has been previously married and divorced (and that those facts were earlier thought to be obstacles to gaining the Queen’s approval), was mentioned by at least one of the TV news reports of the engagement I saw yesterday.

Congratulations to the Lovely Couple. And good work Harry for another milestep in race relations!  She is gorgeous!

I couldn’t care less about her being mixed race.

I do care about another addition to the tax bill. If they want a more modern monarchy in tune with the plebs, cut the ridiculous pomp, lavish homes and other nonsense. Perhaps a more low-key monarchy may even help reduce the voyeuristic interest in these people from the tabloid-reading public.

Mixed race couples are entirely standard in the West now, Britain included.

Why would you want to restrict your options to those of the same ethnicity as you, when there may be very compatible people out there of other ethnicity's. That said, obviously you need to be aware of different norms and traditions and how you might handle that going forward. In this case I doubt its an issue.

Thing is, its all that pomp and ceremony, the palace etc that continues to attract media attention which helps the monarchy retain an interest in the eyes of the public. An invisible monarchy would signal its death. Its also the reason why the British monarchy is the most well known the world over.

To that end, Harry and William have been a godsend for the future of the royal family being as active as they are.

Britain will be the last country on Earth to get rid of its monarchy. They tried it once remember, it didn't last.

People seem to forget that.

Despite what many choose to believe the UK is a multicultural country, always has been. The 10 yearly census has shown that mixed raced people are the fastest growing ethnic group in the UK, Ms Markle's ethnicity is nothing new.

As a couple, I'm sure they will be fine. Racism is slowly being eradicated and they seem to be into each other. Which, given previous royal relationships, can only be a good thing.

As for the future of the monarchy? It's good to see this Anglo-Germanic-American family continue the long tradition of sponging off the British tax-payer.

Something the royals themselves often complain about. Henry’s mother died partly because of the media frenzy which surrounds these people.

"Britain has problems, but this shows Britain is a very tolerant society."

I agree. Britain's one of the most (imo the most) racially tolerant country in the western world.

As an aside, let's be honest, I also think that Meghan Markle being a very (very) light-skinned, Caucasian-looking Hollywood actress didn't hurt either.

Good on you Prince Harry ! At a time in America when resurgent racists are fighting to retain monuments glorifying white men that fought to retain slavery, the British Royal Family in olde England is welcoming an American bride with African-American roots ! ... Maybe this should be a teaching moment ? ...

If this happened in Japan.....OMG!

We already know hell would freeze over before anything like that happens, thanks to Aso Taro and 'blue eyes'.

Having said that, I don't think the powers that be would ever had allowed Williams to marry her. Harry is just the spare, so he has more freedom.

One of the queen's nephews or other relative is openly gay. And I think one of the princes in Denmark(?) was once married to a woman of half Chinese ancestry.

If they want a more modern monarchy in tune with the plebs, cut the ridiculous pomp, lavish homes and other nonsense. Perhaps a more low-key monarchy may even help reduce the voyeuristic interest in these people from the tabloid-reading public.

That's one thing Prince Charles has done correctly - stopping from his brother Airmiles Andy and his 'princesses' from getting a bigger cut of the cake, and trying to trim down everything. I am by no means a fan of royalty, but I do think the queen has done the best she can for the country, despite the rigidity of her character. The two princes do seem more in touch with the public, and hopefully William's days of being 'workshy' are over.

I also think that Meghan Markle being a very (very) light-skinned, Caucasian-looking Hollywood actress didn't hurt either.

Kinda like how Caucasian-looking Chloe Wong had no offers from Hollywood, but as soon as she changed her name to Chloe Bennet, offers started piling up!

Waouh, I did not even thought a second about her being of mixed raced while reading her biography. A beauty is a beauty.

Harry is rather the one to be the special skin type ;)

What I rather checked was that she divorced already twice and seemed to change men as a hobby.

Knowing she is American, I would not bet on that horse about a lenghty marriage alas.

I give remarks as I would not like this ever to happen (I got direct English blood and even perhaps native American one so feel quite concerned lol).

Bet Phil aint too pleased.

Of course it is great to see love across social barriers, but I can’t see the queen agreeing with it.

All the best to them?

America and Britain share a lot, mixed nationality couple yes but cultural, etc?

The election last year of Sadiq Khan, whose parents migrated from Pakistan, as London's first Muslim mayor also showed the declining importance ascribed to racial backgrounds, Rifkind said.

Islam is not a race for crying out loud. It is bad enough that the corporate media always bring up this fake talking point, but a government official? Embarrassing.

No false pretention, cupid arrow has worked magic.

Meghan Markle portrays a confident  elegance, oozing  je ne sais quoi  chic.  Prince Harry has that endearingly awkward Englishness, a ginger Hugh Grant.

Nothing like Hugh. More a James Hewitt, I reckons.

More an elite public school, beer-swilling, rugger type for me. Not the worst types I've come across.

"That doesn't mean Britain and its institutions are free from racial discrimination. Non-whites have lower incomes, suffer a disproportionate number of hate crimes, and are often stereotyped in the media"

Gregory Katz are you living in the 21st century?

The U.K. has strong anti-discrimination laws, the Commission for Racial Equality(CRE ) and housing designated for minorities.Even the healthcare workers speak Punjabi!

London and other large cities are meccas for a plethora of over a hundred nationalities.London has the most number of French speakers outside of France.

Even a Japanese can rent a home, buy books and magazines and order a meal in their native language.

Sure, there are depressing areas of the U.K. where life is depressing but foreigners line up to get into the UK!

The lack of focus on Markle's heritage — her father is white and her mother is African-American

The Royal Family certainly getting more variety

Prince Harry's future mother-in-law also sports dreadlocks. :-)

The Obamas will definitely be at the wedding (Harry and them are friendly)

Would be interesting to see if Trump sitting beside the Obamas - the white supremacists wouldn't want to see him commemorate the new princess (an American divorcee humanitarian gender-equality activist) and her mother

https://www.glamour.com/story/meghan-markle-prince-harry-engaged-twitter-reactions

Given the UK is such a close ally of the US, I'm shocked Donald Trump hasn't tweeted his congratulations to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on their engagem- Ah. Nevermind. I hope the Obamas have a great time at the wedding! http://pic.twitter.com/YdWh50403K

Can’t wait for Trump’s pressed tweet about how he’s turning down an invitation to the royal wedding and Buckingham Palace’s subsequent tweet that they never invited him

Why are so many people assuming that Trump will be invited to the wedding? Unless he is invited as a personal friend of the couple there is no reason for him to be there.

Erm, let's be careful just how much we pat ourselves on the back now. I've been on university campuses in "the west" that are plastered with graffiti for far-right white supremacist organizations that label any dating between whites and non-white as genocide against white people. It may be that mixed-race couples are acceptable to the majority, but there is a bigoted minority in some countries of "the west" that virulently opposes them.

Hi Jimizo hazarding a guess, you're not a monarchist. I have always shied away from republicanism after the nightmare thought possibility/probability of Tony Blair become GB's head of state.

goldorak, from the neck up, both could have been separated at birth.

Nobody in Western Europe cares that she's mixed race. She's pretty and classy. Princess material, even if she'll only ever be a duchess.

The only thing I find striking is the resemblance between Kate and/or Pippa Middleton.

Though the US is UK's closest ally, Trump definitely won't be there as a personal friend, lol

https://www.stuff.co.nz/world/europe/99305684/the-obamas-and-not-the-trumps-might-get-an-invite-to-price-harrys-wedding

First off, Harry and Meghan don't have to treat the Trumps like those annoying family members that everyone insists you must invite. Since he's now fifth in line to the throne (and soon to be sixth with his brother, Prince William, expecting a third child), the couple might not be under as much pressure to invite the heads of state from all of the UK's allies, even their besties in the United States. After all, the Obamas didn't attend the 2011 wedding of Harry's big brother William, reportedly because of security costs for the then-first couple to attend.

President Trump has yet to comment on the news despite the fact Markle is set to become the first American to be bequeathed with the title of Her Royal Highness (HRH).

Disparaging comments Markle made about Mr Trump are expected to receive renewed attention in the wake of their engagement. While members of the royal family are of course forced to remain impartial due to age-old protocol, in a 2016 interview

Back in May 2016 — before Markle began dating Prince Harry, and before the Access Hollywood recording was made public or multiple women came forward to accuse then-candidate Trump of sexual misconduct — Markle was on “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore” - the humanitarian and gender equality campaigner called [Trump] a divisive misogynist.

Harry is a good guy, my parents came across him and some of his old uni mates drinking in a pub in Brixham and he had time for everyone at the bar in there, not stuffed away in a corner surrounded by minders. Good on them, I hope they live a happy life together.
