The new legislation will mean anyone who arrives on small boats will be prevented from claiming asylum and deported to so-called safe third countries.

Which is completely against the UN refugee convention.

Not surprising though. This tory government has no empathy for asylum seekers... They tried to send refugees to Rwanda.

Such are the wages of being an abusive colonial power that routinely enslaved the people of the lands they colonized, played ethnic groups against each other and who destroyed and brutalized the people they ruled. With few exceptions every former British. colony is plagued by violence, racism and often poverty. Indeed today the sun never sets on a society ruined by British rule.

Sounds like every colonial power that ever existed, including some that wouldn't describe themselves as such.

I can certainly think of one that does indeed have such problems.

With few exceptions every former British. colony is plagued by violence, racism and often poverty. Indeed today the sun never sets on a society ruined by British rule.

The former colony with mass murders and the highest levels of gun homicides in the G7 is the former colony of British America.

Ironically, a prominent former colony is now following the British example.

I was very much implying that the US today suffers from the plagues of extreme racism and violence exactly because the British were such barbaric filth. Little has change in the 247 years since the Americans ejected them from their land.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has made stopping boat arrivals one of his five key priorities after the number of migrants arriving on the south coast of England soared to more than 45,000 last year, with around 90% applying for asylum.

The new legislation will mean anyone who arrives on small boats will be prevented from claiming asylum and deported to so-called safe third countries.

The sheer numbers of people arriving, some cases washed up in "boats, inflatable dinghies" are unsustainable, there simply isn't the resource or accommodation available to present any prospect of settlement.

It is ludicrous political grandstanding to suggest otherwise.

There is a danger, contending that the UK government will inevitably have to accept the European Court of Human Rights, UN refugee convention will be scarified without a cross European commitment to halt these illegal people smugglers.

There is simply no possibility that UK social welfare system can absorb these illegal migrants.

Irrespective of political division and opinion.

You mean being a haven of freedom for those seeking a better life? If you say so.

As for colonial slavery, Britain was the one the first power that abolished and then spearheaded the successful global campaign to end slavery throughout the world.

200-300 years ago, slavery was common globally, especially rampant in the Middle East and Africa, also encompassing many native American tribes, and so on and so on.

Singling out Britain in this regard smacks of a large chip on one's shoulder, not to mention a profoundly distorted understanding of history.

Great Britain has always been a safe haven for people in desperate need.

Asylum in the UK

To clarify without any political prejudice, the UNHCR numbers.

These people smugglers are putting the lives of genuine asylum seekers at risk.

In the UNHCR link is a important breakdown of individual definitions of migration, refugee, asylum seeker status.

The Tories looking to liven up their base. Massively behind in the polls and have fringe right parties trying to woo their voters. Farage and the like have been hammering this issue. He’s been out around the coast with his Barbour, yellow pants and cap on with a pair of binoculars.

I don’t doubt Braverman, the one who ‘dreams’ of deporting people, is sincerely behind this though.

From what I have read on the workability of this, one problem seems to be how viable the agreements are with the countries the people are fleeing from.

Tell that to Julian Assange

Cruella breaking international law. Can we lock her up for it?

It won't get past the courts. It's to deflect attention from the NI deal that they have to squeeze past the DUP and the Brexit lobby. They think that looking like fascists will help their cause.

@Desert Tortoise. Are you saying the US still hasn't found its own way after 247 years? Stop blaming All-American failings on ancient history. We didn't write your constitution. You are responsible for your own mess.

This lawless Tory government is certainly living up to its name, derived from the Middle Irish word tóraidhe, modern Irish tóraí, meaning "outlaw", "robber" (men pursued by the law). Their abominable treatment of foreigners, asylum seekers, refugees (and, unknown to most people, even British citizens with foreign spouses) will not save them in the next general election when the present pursuers and persecutors of the "powerless" will find themselves "the pursued" by a hopping mad electorate sick and tired of the Tories' Brexit shell game that has brought the country to its knees.

I really question the political motivation of this Government, the fact that UK has clear responsibilities, lagal duties under the ECHR, and the UN refugee convention.

Also, maybe its is my cynicism, Braverman performance at the dispatch box lacks empathy.

All pointing to the next general election, all these pledges are political mischief making,

Suggesting the Conservative government could front the next general election on a policy to withdraw from ECHR.

The appointments of the likes of Patel and Braverman were made to shore up the Tories’ defence against fringe right parties nicking their voters. Cameron caved to similar pressure on him regarding the referendum. He soiled himself after seeing his MPs defect or threaten to defect to UKIP.

As mentioned, the legality and workability of this move is very questionable but the Tories are more interested in posturing and throwing out red meat at this point.

The Tories are a relegation side just twatting the ball from 35 yards hoping it flies in the top corner.

If I was an asylum seeker, I would go to the nearest safe place. If I was an economic migrant, I would go to a place where I can get a free hotel room, in pretty little rustic village, free financial benefits, healthcare, education and scones with jam and clotted cream.

Main issue appears to be lack of housing, quality of housing, and lack of any investment into public infrastructure.

Former and current colonizer countries have a moral obligation to help those whose lands they have robbed. Time to do the right thing.

The UK (unlike Japan) has always welcomed genuine refugees compassionately. There is a difference between genuine refugees and illegal immigrants.

Exactly. The British exported the worst aspects of their culture, which still linger in their homeland today.

We have taken in 161,000 Ukrainian refugees so far. Japan? 2,300. That's 70 times the number, and then when you factor in that Japan has double the population, that's 140 times. We don't need lectures from anyone about treatment of refugees.

GBR48, the racism and associated violence in the US are the unresolved legacy of British rule. The US legal system in all its confrontational ways is fundamentally the same as the UK legal system. UK brought their tradition of slavery to the US and with that the tradition of viewing other than white people as somehow less than human. No UK was not alone amonv colonial powers in enslaving native populations they ruled but that in no way absolves the British from the damage they have done to their former colonies. Now go ahead and hate on me and vote me down if you like. From where I sit Britain is still pladued by arrogance and bigotry.

Luddite, UK and France drew the boundaries of much of the Middle East after the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in WWI. Those boundaries were drawn with little regard for the ethnic, religious or tribal affiliations of their population. Then Britain and France installed absolute despots to rule them. Conflict was guaranteed and that is what we see today.

Get over yourself. You wouldn't catch me whining about what a mess my country's in because of what a bunch of people did three centuries ago. If those issues are still unresolved the Americans have no one to blame but themselves. They've had since 1783 to do something about them.
