But alchohol commericals and billboards are among the most entertaining on the market today!

I support that, but if I were an ad exec I wouldn't and since since ad companies pay taxes, that would be a great loss and those very same doctors may feel the pinch.

that rule exist in france... no add on TV, only magazine and billboard, with a sentence saying abusing alcohol is unhealthy... but nothing on TV for alcohol or cigarettes. they should have a look and see if that is working or not !

Such a policy represents somewhat of a quandary for all concerned.

On one hand, any moves that reinforce healthy and responsible lifestyle habits should be applauded. On the other hand, what other entertainment options are there for the average British citizen? It has to be realized that the abuse of alcohol in the United Kingdom is directly related to the fact that the weather in the country leaves a lot to be desired, and the national cuisine itself is one of the strongest advertisements for emigration that there is.

Well, I think it's not a bad suggestion. At worst you'll end up with a compromise and 'Drink Clean' adds.

More seriously, though, I see no harm in such a ban on alcohol and tobacco products. People know they exist, know where and how to get it, and it's still shown in movies and what not; I don't see the need to have it in your face every where. Big revenue loss for a lot of people, though.

Alcohol advertising in Japan is far worse. It really is everywhere. It's interesting how it always promotes how "delicious" the beer or whatever is, rather than how good the high feels. Perhaps there are laws that forbid this. In Japan it does seem to tread a fine line on this. Red-faced and giggly after a big slurp and long "aahhhhh"! I'm pretty sure alcohol is not advertised like this back home. The "sporty smoker" ads are great too!

A similar ban in my country resulted in 'alcohol-free' vodka ads. Wink wink.

Can pubs ban doctors in return?

Doctors in hospitals use alcohol all the time, to wash their hands. Maybe they could compromise with vodka ads emphasizing the anti-septic properties.

Doctors in Britain have a higher rate of alcoholism than the general public.
